Description
The shemagh, also known as the keffiyeh or Arab scarf, is a simple yet efficient way to protect your face and neck from sun, wind and sand. It also works well as alternative winter headwear, particularly in areas with snow and strong winds. Styles of wearing the shemagh vary, but wrapping the scarf around the head and face provides optimal protection from the elements. Instructions for Wearing a Shemagh: ⇒ [Step 1] Fold the shemagh into a triangle. Wrap it around the back and over the top of your head, with the folded edge across your forehead, making sure that about two-thirds of the material is on your left. The right end ought to be long enough to come to your chest. ⇒ [Step 2] Use your left hand to pinch the shemagh about 3 or 4 inches from the folded edge and let the edge hang forward. ⇒ [Step 3] Let go of the right end. Using your left hand, hold the edge of the shemagh next to your left cheek and hold it near your left cheekbone. After you do this, use your right hand to pull the left end of the shemagh across your face, over your nose. ⇒ [Step 4] Continue to wrap the shemagh around your face and head until you get it back over your left shoulder. Grip the right tail and hold it to keep from pulling the shemagh off your head as you wrap. Work your hands down toward the ends as you wrap. ⇒ [Step 5] Pull the shemagh as tight as needed to feel comfortable. At the end of the process, take both ends and, somewhere near your right temple, tie them in a knot. A square knot will secure the shemagh adequately.

I really enjoy my Shemagh. I live in CO, and the fall cold snap hasn't affected me in the slightest with this thing on. People are complaining about it not being super soft.. When it was designed (It is traditionally called a Keffiyeh), they didn't have stuff like 'Microfleece'. Regardless, It's a multi-purpose scarf/head wrap that you should carry or wear every day. These scarfs have almost unlimited uses. Here's a few examples: Dust Protection. Cover your face on motorcycles, truck beds, and tops of chicken buses. Sun Protection. Great for when you’re stranded in mid-day heat without shade nearby. Towel. Small, lightweight, fast drying, but thick enough get the job done. Perfect for the beach. Warmth. Wrap it around your neck as a scarf on the top of a mountain. Bag. Lay it out, put stuff in middle, tie four corners together. Instant hobo sack. Sarong. While shorter than a normal one, it can still be wrapped around your waist. Sweat Rag. Great for hiking, running, or other sweat-inducing activities. Arm Sling. Sprain a wrist or break an arm? Perfect for temporary immobilization. Emergency Bandage. Help stop bleeding and protect the wound until you get to a hospital. Pillow. Really cool pattern that was the same color I expected. It was a birthday gift and the recipient absolutely loved it. There was no foul smell to this one like others have reported. IMO the quality is better than what you should expect for the price, it is thin but they are supposed to be. Don't expect this to be a heavy winter scarf, that's not what they're designed for, although I wear mine plenty in the winter just as a buffer to the wind. Do not put these in the washer! Hand wash and hang dry only! Squeeze the water out without wringing it before you hang dry. It won't need washed often so take care to do it right when it does need it. Comes with a hundred and one uses, these are nice just to keep in your car or jacket pocket because you never know when you'll need a shemagh!

Better than expected

I wanted to try this product because I needed a scarf that had the ability to protect my neck, chin, mouth, and nose from the winter wind. It does a fabulous job at those requirements, and has the benefit of added versatility. I'd highly recommend. As you might know, this is a triangle scarf. It comes as a square, which can be folded in half at the corners, making a triangle. There are virtually endless possibilities with this scarf. It isn't just for wrapping up your head and face shemagh-style. Most of the time, I wear this by wrapping it cowboy/robber style around my face. I then take the ends of the triangle, and wrap them around the back of my neck, tying them in the front. Then I pull the scarf down off of my nose, and keep it covering my mouth or chin. It's a very thin material, but you will be impressed by how warm it is. I walk my dog almost daily, and sometimes the weather changes part way through the walk. That's when having a convertible scarf comes in handy. I have used this during moderately heavy snow a few times already, and it was extremely warm all the way back home. I have used it as a blanket in the car, as a shawl in the house, and as a pillow on long trips. I can't wait to take this on a hiking trip. It's an extremely versatile piece of material, and I plan on buying more of these.

I would have given this five stars except for the fact that the colors are much darker in person compared to the pictures and the skull pattern on the one I got is very hard to see. Now why I gave it four stars, it's very well made compared to another one I ordered here on Amazon that had a lightweight cheap feel and loose weave that comes apart and snags easily and smelled like burning oil (maybe it was an authentic shemagh?) on a side note British soldiers didn't create these, they have been being worn by middle eastern desert people for a lot longer then British soldiers, the British just copied the use from the original wearers, and now a several other countries militaries use them, anyway it is made a lot better then the one I bought first and this one doesn't smell like burning oil, doesn't have a smell at all really other then what you'd expect to smell from the material it's made from? Anyway it is a lot heavier fabric then my first one, it looks good and fits good and I'll probably order a couple other patterns besides the skull pattern, if you want a decent shemagh this one is really nice compared to some cheaper ones, it's plenty big and I haven't had a single snag or any loose threading and I've had it for a few weeks now and love I a lot

This shemagh is the best I have seen. I have bought several when I have come across them in stores. Usually it was Army Surplus type stores, and I don't remember the brands of all the different ones that I have purchased. For a variety of reasons, I have never like the ones that I have purchased in the past. One of the biggest issues I with other brands that I have purchased in the past is that the material has been too heavy. To feel it, you would not think it was too thick. But, my the time you roll it up, or wrap it as a scarf, they have been rather thick and heavy. Wearing them in warmer weather, they have almost been unbearable. It is almost like wrapping a towel around your head or neck. This shemagh is very lightweight, and yet very durable. When rolled, it is not overly bulky. Yet, I don't feel like it is too thin. It is just excellent the way is!! Thick enough to be durable, but thin enough to be used in many weather conditions. One other feature that I like about this shemagh, compared to others that I have seen, and is not mentioned in the product description is the corners. The edges have knots and then frayed material. Many are that way all the way around. If you lay it out flat on the floor, the corners are easy to locate, but when you are standing up and trying to fold the shemagh, finding the corners is not as easy as you would think. Many styles of wraps require you to find the corners and fold it in half. WIth this shemagh, the corners are longer, and braided, to make it easy to find them, and to distinguish them from the rest of the tassels all along the edge. It makes it really easy to find the corners, do your folds, and get it tied up correctly. I can't say enough good things about this shemagh. I took a gamble and ordered 4 of them, because of the different colors, and I will be ordering more.

Great product great price!

I rated it 5 stars because I couldn't find any good reason not to give it 5. I've seen some videos where people say that a "real" shemagh is 44" but this 42" seems like a good size to me. In other words I didn't think it was too small. The quality is excellent especially considering the price. I wore this the first 3 days without washing it. (I know I know). It smelled like new white t-shirts before they're washed. It was also a bit scratchy. I was afraid to wash it in the washing machine because I thought the tassels were going to get caught up somehow. I didn't experience that. I also thought that it would shrink a little. I didn't notice that it shrunk. Seems like the same size to me. I will say that I didn't put it to dry for the full amount of time or intensity. I put it for a shorter time so that it was barely damp when I took it out of the drier. Fabric feels great now. Right now it's cold weather outside so I can't comment on how well it protects against heat or the sun. I can say that it's been doing a great job with the cold weather. The weather has been between the 30's and high 40's where I'm at right now. Hasn't seen snow however. I've only had it for about 1 week and so far I've been extremely satisfied with my shemagh. I will be buying more!

I will not vote this 1 star; and heres why. Many people complain about how this isn't the thickest material, and the weave is bad so it falls apart easier, compared to professional middle eastern shemaghs. And heres the thing; there 100% correct. The weave on this isn't good, and after very little use I can see the stitching already begin to come apart, and can tell it's begun to come apart. But it does exactly what it was advertised to do. The colors look great, and they do not fade. I got the product in prestine condition, with no rips or missing fabric. They wash and dry great, and don't need any special attention, which would be required for a "traditional" shemagh. This is a mass produced item made for those that would like to own a piece of culture, or a nice looking fashion accessory. This IS NOT a traditionally made Shemagh with the purpose of sheltering you from the weather of a middle eastern desert; and never once was I left with that impression before buying it. So again, yes this product has it's flaws. However, the price does not lie. This is not the best shemagh you can find; however it fulfills it's role perfectly. Do not be put off buying this item by reviewers that demand all items be perfect and traditional. This is not a $80 shemagh hand crafted by someone in Palestine. This item is exactly what it's supposed to be; And I recommend it to all.

NOT COTTON! But very nice anyway.

Very Nice, but NOT 100% COTTON! Put a flame to a tassel and you will see it melt, ball up, and drip molten material. Must be polyester or blend of synthetics. They advertise it as cotton, but the one I received was definately not. If that is not a concern for you, read on... This is a very solid material. It is slightly scratchy. Might be some wool, or goat hair, or camel hair in it, who knows? It does not come with a label for country of manufacture or materials. The scratchiness might go away after a couple washings. It is not exactly square, but nice and large, a full 44 inches not counting the tassels, which by the way are longer than tassels of some other shemaghs, and all four sides are tassled. Some other brands only have tassels on two sides. This Shemagh arrived properly packaged and it was clean and neat and did not have any foul odors or nasty stains. When I washed it, the color did not fade (Green and Black). I washed it by hand first, expecting the dyes to run, but they did not. After first use, I washed it in the the washing machine along with my towels, and still no fading can be seen. Here are some washing tips: I used one of those little zipper bags that my wife uses for delicate items, just to make sure it didn't get pulled apart in the washing machine. The open weave of these fabrics can get snagged on the machine or on zippers if you wash it with other items. Use cold water only. Don't put it in the dryer unless you want to tempt your fate with shrinkage. Just hang it up somewhere and let it dry. The fabric is thin, so they air dry pretty fast anyway. If you don't mind synthetic fibers, this Shemagh will do the job, and with that in mind I give it five stars.
