  • I really like this game
Platform: Nintendo Switch
I really like this game. I like how it looks more clear then it did on the GameCube. I really like the story and the graphics.

  • Pros and Cons
Platform: Nintendo Switch
I played the original Tales of Symphonia on GameCube and loved it, so here are some pros and cons of the Switch remaster: Pros: - Graphic improvements - Amazing story and character development - Great character support conversations - Voice acting is impeccable - Modern console accessibility Cons: - No new quality of life enhancements (yes it’s a remaster and not a remake, but remasters often add a couple functional enhancements, and features like easier healing that doesn’t cost money and never disabling system menu saving would have been great) - Even with the graphic enhancements, you can tell by the look and feel that it’s a remaster of an older game and not a remake, but it’s worth it since the game was so great - Load time issues that seem like they were not present in the original - Lack of camera control on the world map makes it hard to see where you’re going - Does not include the sequel like the previous PS3 remaster did Tales of Symphonia was one of my first JRPGs that started my love of JRPGs. It’s also one of the only action RPG series I like since I tend to prefer turn-based. Switch is also my favorite console because of the option to play it on the TV or portable, so I’m glad I have the game on Switch. I’m happy such a great game and story is on modern consoles period, especially for people who have never had a chance to play it. However, they could have done more with it. The PS3 remaster had similar graphic upgrades with the sequel included, so that should have been the baseline to improve upon, not removing features like the sequel without adding new features like quality of life enhancements. You don’t need the sequel since both game stories stand alone, but I would expect more from a second remaster if it’s being labeled that and not a just a port. If you have never played Tales of Symphonia and you prefer the Switch, I’d recommend it for the story and characters alone. If you have the PS3 remaster, that was technically better. However, still good to be able to play it again. ... show more

  • Still an amazing game but with a garbage port. Find another version
Platform: Nintendo Switch
I picked up this game because for some reason I have to have every version of each Tales game so I can play it again. I was so excited to have it on a more mobile console and eagerly fired it up. Almost instantly I was met with frame rate drops and just general bad optimization. There are many reviews that mention the changes that they made with the UI and battle screen that I won't waste time here outlining. I beat the game but it was at times an absolute slog to do. The game crashed on multiple occasions. Multiple areas suffered the same frame rate drop, and the entirety of many final boss battles moved at a snails pace due to frame rate issues. The story is amazing and it was great to relive the nostalgia. However, I would save your money on picking this up. If you want to experience this game, I recommend you find a better, more optimized version that is accessible to you. ... show more

  • Perspective of a first time player
Platform: Nintendo Switch
I have no point of reference for comparison as this is my first time ever playing this game. I have heard all of the complaints though. I was all set to return it without even trying but changed my mind and decided to give it a shot unpatched. So far it plays like an old clunky game but I’m intrigued and enjoying the game. I likely would not have noticed most of the complaints on my own as a new player but the complaints are true. I’m glad that I checked it out though and I think it’s worth keeping as someone who has no other physical copy. Buying it physically on Xbox or ps is out of the question for me because while I do own those platforms, I play rpgs handheld only. I’m satisfied with this one. ... show more

  • Tales of Framerate
Platform: Nintendo Switch
I loved the GC version of Tales of Symphonia and when ToS Chronicles was released on PS3, I loved being able to replay it with the additional gameplay elements that only enhanced the game. Sadly, this version does not meet those same expectations. It is a direct port of the GC version, but somehow worse. With the 30fps lock on the switch even when docked, the game drops sometimes down to 14 fps in certain areas or when leaving battle. Certain effects, such as the glass shattering screen change when entering battle no longer exists and is simply a cut to black that delays combat slightly. The quality of life changes present and extra content from ToS Chronicles also does not seem to be in this game. At a $40 price, I was expecting more. ... show more

  • Hardly A Remaster
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Bandai really dropped the ball on this one, so much so that the Gamecube version runs better than this. The frame rate is terrible, and this is borderline unplayable. I do not know if the PS4 version is better, but the Switch version has been a let down for sure.
