- Synology NAS/NVR comes with default licenses that allow you to set up and manage surveillance devices. The number of default licenses may differ. You only need to purchase extra licenses when your deployment requires more licenses than the default ones listed below: Synology NAS: 2 default licenses. Network Video Recorder: 4 default licenses. Deep Learning NVR: 8 default licenses
- Synology also provides three options for additional purchased licenses: 1, 4 or 8 Surveillance Device License Packs; each comes with a single license key, allowing you to activate 1, 4 or 8 surveillance devices at a time.
- To find out the maximum number of surveillance devices supported on each Synology NAS/NVR, please refer to the specifications of each model.
- Purchased licenses can be migrated, while default license keys cannot.
- Under most circumstances, each IP camera, I/O module, IP speaker, intercom, and access controller will only require one license, while each transaction device will require two licenses. However, multi-lens cameras and video servers for analog cameras may require additional licenses. For more details about supported cameras and surveillance devices, please refer to the Camera Support List and Surveillance Device Support List at Synology website.

I like the ease of use and not tied to a specific camera brand!

Let’s get the price out of the way, yeah it can be pricey if you have a lot of cameras to license. However, most of us have 4-5 cameras, you get 2 free licenses in the ds220+ and other Synology models so really your spending under 200 bucks for them to stay on top of the software which is no small task. Not to mention that it’s licensed for life unlike other software that milks you yearly or monthly just to use it. Overall, I think they do a pretty good job in functionality and as good as most in security updates. The phone app is easy to use and if you have a router that supports VPN then wherever you are, use VPN to connect to your router and don’t worry about exposing your NAS to the web. No need for quick connect either. Could they do better? Of course there’s always room for that but out of the box, I have nothing to complain about and I’d recommend this solution over a no name NVR and even most of the big name NVR’s just on the security issues alone and lack of up dating. So I give it an 8.5 out of ten.

Great NAS but At what point is the price too high?

Synology, its about time you stabilize the price of these licenses. If you keep raising prices customers are going to go elsewhere. It works 100% and I use these in several states, but if you price yourself out of the market I will stop using Synology and go with another brand that does not nickle and dime customers.

If you have a synology NAS, you may have discovered that you can use it to run IP cameras on your network. The only thing you need is your cameras, a PoE switch (or injectors), and the NAS. In my case, I use the NAS as a backup but I don't even come close to fully utilizing it so it is doubling as a station for my cameras. Here's the issue with Synology. The units work on a licensing system for cameras. Most come with 2. If you only have 2 cameras, no big deal. You have everything you need right out of the box. If you want more, however, you have to buy licenses. This practice is really annoying. I did it because it's still cheaper than buying a dedicated unit (and adding NAS friendly hard drives, remember, they need to be surveillance or NAS rated, not standard hard drives and definitely not SSDs because of the constant read/write access). Realistically, I labelled this 5 stars because it is exactly what it is supposed to be. You get the code, you enter it, and a half a second later, you have the ability to add a new camera. I just have a problem with Synology's practice of charging so much per camera.

Worked to expand DS1019+ from two to three cameras

Expanded my DS1019+ to three licenses (on top of the two built in) in order to use all three of the cameras in my house. Some people complain about needing a physical card instead of just an online code, but in the end this is more secure and I was able to put the card in a folder so I don't lose track if I needed it later. Emails and files are too easy to lose, which is slightly ironic considering this is going on a NAS. Docked one star for the price. I feel like the mid-range 1019+ should have either had more licenses included than an entry level model, or the price of the licenses should be about half of what they are. Eventually I plan to add one or two more cameras and will have to weigh the cost of the licenses in deciding to proceed.

High cost license

It’s a license to expand the number of cameras that can be ran simultaneously on the synology system. The only gripe I have is the cost. I guess I can take solace in that it’s a one time buy and not a reoccurring subscription charge.

Easy to integrate to my current system

The key is easy to input to my CCTV system and the camera was authenticated successfully. The license is quite expensive but it has feature support that caters to many different CCTV cameras. I hope they would offer this on SALE since it is very easy to use and the license is transferrable to any Synology NAS or dedicated Surveillance systems.

We shouldn't have to pay for "extras" but I guess I understand why they do this...

It really is ludicrous to have to pay for "extra licenses" to permit the use of additional cameras... but I get why this is something Foscam is doing. They want to sell into the "high end security" market... which typically costs a lot more than a typical home server. If they didn't do this, nobody would buy the high-end security stations, and everybody would just go with the traditional NAS device (which is a marvelous device). It's mildly annoying, to be sure. But most of us will only have a handful of cameras (if we're just securing our home) and the cost of a license is pretty low compared to, say, the cost of a good-quality IP camera. So, if you're serious about setting up surveillance for your home or office, the cost of the licenses, while annoying, is actually fairly trivial. It doesn't excuse Synology's doing this... I consider it a massively boneheaded maneuver (obviously driven by internal competition between their NAS group and their Security group). But as bone-headed maneuvers go, it's not as bad as many others I've seen. I can live with this one, in other words... while in every other way I'm very happy with my Diskstation.

Synology surveillance station is the best you are going to get in the reasonable price range…I consider this the entry level into the commercial /industrial processional products and I currently have a synology ds723+ with two 1Tb M.2 drives for cache and expanded RAM chip as well. Running 24 cameras 24/7 constant (no motion activation), 20 or 30fps and 8mp. Am very happy with it. Note - my job is installing commercial systems in large facilities and this is what I bought for my own house .
