  • Great basic recorder
I ordered a -lot- of the inexpensive plastic 8 hole plastic recorders on Amazon in order to test them out and see what the differences are. I ordered the German style recorders from EAST TOP, Conjurer, SWAN, and Soulmate. I also ordered the baroque style 8 hole plastic recorder from Yonty. I’m posting this review for all of them. The big reveal: all the German style 8 hole plastic recorders are the same. The only way I can tell the difference between brands is by looking at the brand that’s stenciled on the recorder. The soulmate doesn’t have a brand marking. I ordered them all in different colors and the only difference I can find between them is the color. I would not be surprised at all if they all came from the same manufacturing line. Regarding that one baroque style recorder – the hole pattern is a little different from the German style, but that’s the only difference. Watch some videos to help you choose a fingering style. I chose German style because that’s what most of the people in my circle are familiar with. All of these recorders are three piece: head piece (includes mouth piece), middle (has most of the holes), and foot. The pieces can be swapped around for new color combinations. The baroque has a slightly different middle piece but is otherwise the same as the German style recorders. The fit and finish on all of them is good. They can all be washed in the sink and then set out to dry. How do they sound? … Pretty good! Much more expensive wood recorders seem to have a slightly richer sound. It’s a sound that I think of as the wood in woodwind. It may all be my imagination because I’m comparing these to a remembered sound when a concert musician played. The difference might have been technique, instrument, or bad memory. All that said, these inexpensive plastic recorders are not just toys. Are they fun? … Oh yes, they are fun. They are unreasonably fun. The main thing is that so very many people learned to play a song or two on the recorder while they were in elementary school (maybe middle school). People who went to school in different states learned the same song or two. Take a bunch of recorders to a gathering and be amazed at how much fun they are. ... show more

  • Great buy for a simple instrument
I got this item for my 8 year old. For him, I think this item is great, especially for only $6. Its better quality than a cheap plastic toy, sounds good enough to me (I'm no professional though), and the black color allows it to pass for more than just a toy. The plastic is nice and thick with no glue marks, nicks or gaps. This means a lot considering it's plastic. I really appreciate that it came with a cleaning rod, which you can attach a scrap of non-linting cloth to to clean the inevitable moisture buildup when you play. I would think if you're an adult really getting into playing seriously this wouldn't be the right quality recorder for you but for a child that wants something more than just a cheap toy, this fits the bill. It came with an info sheet that teaches you about finger placement, plays german and baroque, and came packaged in a plastic snap-close bag. If giving as a gift, my suggestion would be to find something like a nice cloth bag for storing and print off a beginner level song, which would be a nice touch. ... show more

  • Soprano recorder with some extras
Nice finish, good weight. The case is very very thin, we're probably going order a proper storage case and neck strap next . My son learned how to play at school so he loves it!!! My wife, not so much. Hopefully it's durable.

  • Inexpensive place to start.
The media could not be loaded. You can learn the basics on this and practice fingering and breath control over the labium ("whistle" edge) without spending more than at a coffee shop. It definitely doesn't have the resonance of a wood recorder but then it doesn't have that price tag. The 3 pieces makes it easy to carry and clean. If someone sits on it and breaks it not much has been lost. The recorders that cost twice as much sound about the same but come with a case. This one includes a cleaning rod that you put a piece of cloth through the hole and drag it through the insides to dry it out. This is good as a required recorder for a school music class or just as a starter instrument. If the student takes more of an interest in it, better recorders can be had in the $25 to $50 range. I had trouble hitting some notes in key but that could just be a result of the time gap from when I destroyed my last recorder (and never replaced). 4 stars - A bit finicky on some notes that I don't remember having trouble with. ... show more

  • Inexpensive beginner recorder kit
This multi-piece kit with a sturdy plastic recorder, flimsy storage bag, fingering chart, and cleaning rod is a good set for a beginner. If you or your kid wants to try a recorder, this is everything you need to get started for very little $. The sound is decent and should hopefully improve with some practice. ... show more
