I am pleasantly surprised. This review is very thorough for your consideration and expectations. I read the comments before purchasing and learned that most of the negative comments are unfounded (because they didn't read the instructions!) If you're looking for exercise equipment to abuse and bang on, then this product is not for you. When I use this machine, I imagine myself rowing on a pristine lake...nice, smooth, quiet strokes...its a mindset as well as a good workout. I absolutely love this machine and since I live alone, I have it parked in front of the couch and TV and use it several times a day. I have five minor complaints: 1. Tools are provided. The spanner tool edges are a little too sharp for the type of tightening that is needed. In hindsight, I wish I had used my ratchet set instead. 2. The spanner also has a screwdriver on one end in which the head is too small to screw in a very tightly screw #68 (step 2). I ended up using a bigger head screwdriver so that I wouldn't accidentally strip the screw head. 3. The seat can be a little uncomfortable. I find myself repositioning on the seat. Maybe a thick memory foam seat would be better. 4. While the sensor wire on the wheel side of rail is fitted through a plug, the connecting wire is NOT fitted through a plug hole and hence, it is pinched between the connected rails. This is a design error. If a person were to fold the machine and put it away, I can predict that the wire will eventually become severed/damaged. 5. There are no instructions on how to use the machine (except the computer and how to fold away). Better yet, a choice of videos of rowing on a lake with nature sounds in the background would be the cherry on top! It took me about an hour or so from unpacking the box to testing the machine. I am a detail-oriented person and read the instructions carefully. Reading is not enough though; look at the pictures carefully. Despite the minor complaints, I still give this product a honest 5-star rating. I am already feeling the benefits of this workout. This was a very good buy for me. ... show more

Assembly is easy, as an mechanical engineer I rate the materials and manufacture quality excellent, sturdy and the parts are well manufactured and quality. It is not, however, for Athlete rowers, it is belt driven and has one setting for resistance, no adjustments. The blue tooth is worth it if you want a professional feedback screen, otherwise the monitor is just a counter. ... show more

    • Not Enough Resistance

I bought this machine after returning the Sunny Health and Fitness RW5515. Both machines are well-built, comfortable, attractive, and manufactured by a popular, well-respected company. They do not, however, offer enough resistance, at least for me, which is kind of the point of an exercise machine. I’m hardly a muscle man, but they just didn’t give me the workout I wanted. Plus, half-way into the pull, the resistance actually decreases. The instructions ask customers to call the company before returning the unit. Before returning the first unit, I called. Their recording said that due to high sales, it is better to send an e-mail to their customer service, but you could leave a message. I did both, with two questions: 1) This machine has 8 settings. The Sunny RW5856 has 16 settings. Does this indicate greater resistance or did you simply double the number of settings within the same resistance? And 2) the RW5856 has a flywheel – will this help with the uneven pull? This e-mail received an autoreply indicating that it might be two weeks before a response would be sent. I decided that rather than wait, I made an educated guess that the RW5856 would have solved the two problems. So I returned the RW5515 (packing a rowing machine is no easy task, I learned) and ordered the 5856, hoping for the best. Wrong. While I couldn’t make a side-by-side comparison, the 5856 felt a lot like the one it replaced. Oddly, the customer comments on both machines say very little about resistance. I so didn’t want to pack another one that I donated the 5856 to a worthy group. After much further study, I ordered the more expensive rowing machine produced by Women’s Health/Men’s Health (the one with the single handle, not the dual handle model). It has every good feature of the Sunny machines plus, for my needs at least, good steady resistance even at the middle settings. ... show more

    • It's fine. Not amazing. Not horrible.

This is my first rower; it seems to work well enough. I'm glad I got the model with the flywheel, because the magnetic resistance is negligible. Even at the highest setting, it feels like almost nothing. The difference between 1 and 16 resistance settings is approximately .00000001%; they may as well have just had 2 settings: easy, and easier. Even with the highest magnetic setting selected, you have to work super hard and fast to get what I would call a significant workout. The flywheel does get harder to pull the faster you go, but it's still nothing like rowing on an actual boat. This thing just needs more resistance! After 1 week of use, it creaks a little bit whenever the seat rolls past the main pivot joint where you fold it up for storage. There's a support leg here that is suspended in the air during exercise mode, and I'm not sure why they didn't just extend it so that it can touch the floor and prevent the stress/creaking on this crucial area. Hopefully it holds up and doesn't break. I might place something sturdy underneath it to help. The LCD display has somewhat helpful features, but it's not backlit and the screen is incredibly dim and not sharp, even with fresh batteries installed. You need a flashlight in order to see the numbers on the screen, even in a fairly well-lit room! It is fairly quiet (minus the recent creaking sound I mentioned), and has smooth operation. Overall decent quality, I just wish it had more resistance, comparable to maybe a Bowflex or something like that. "Sheerness" is a weird category for rating a piece of exercise equipment, so I did not submit any stars for that, but it was easy to put together, and fairly sturdy. ... show more
