Description

On February 19, 2007, SSG Shilo Harris was patrolling an infamous southern Iraqi roadway when his Humvee was struck by an IED. Moments later, three members of his crew were dead and Shilo had sustained severe burns over 35 percent of his body, lost his ears and the skin off his face, and lost much of the use of his badly mangled fingers. This fiery moment was just the beginning of an arduous road laced with pain, emotional anguish, and much soul- searching. For forty-eight days Shilo lay trapped in a medically induced coma as his wife, unable to ease his suffering, had to come to grips with a man utterly changed. This is the story of a young boy raised in a small Texas town under the heavy yoke of a father struggling with the personal aftermath of his service in Vietnam. This is the story of the first human being to participate in extracellular stem cell regeneration to regrow lost body parts. This is the story of the survivor not only of an explosion but of more than sixty surgeries to restore both form and function to his broken body. This is the story of the wife who stood by his side, made hard decisions, and continues to support her husband through his struggles with PTSD. This is the story of a God who reshapes us into the people he wants us to be. And in that way, this is the story of all of us. Anyone whose life has been touched by tragedy and loss, especially military families dealing with PTSD, TBI, amputations, and other realities of wartime service, will find strength, encouragement, and inspiration in this moving memoir. • Awesome and inspiring story!
Format: Hardcover
I saw Shilo being interviewed on television awhile back and immediately ordered the book. Reading his story was an emotional and inspiring journey. With all the negativity and hate out there, it was wonderful to get to know a man who has been to hell and back and still manages to keep a positive perspective. He is a regular guy of extraordinary character who has risen to every challenge presented to him. He's a patriot, and has a searing love of his family, his god (I'm not religious, but I can respect those who are), and his country. The book was extremely well written and is hard to put down. Anyone who can appreciate an inspiring story will love this book, but, being a veteran (combat arms early 80s saw no combat), I particularly could identify with his discussions of teamwork, dedication, and drive to accomplish his missions. If I could give this book 6 stars, I would. Absolutely, totally a GREAT read. ... show more

  • A story of courage, hope and enlightenment-a must read
Format: Kindle
SSG (Ret) Shilo Harris's story is beyond inspirational. It leaves a lasting impression about suffering and loss but more importantly hope and the journey towards healing. Much more than a combat narrative his description of burns and the extreme challenges to regain and mantain optimal function show the true costs of conflict. The greatest gift Shilo imparts has to be his earnest and vivid explanations of PTSD and compassion fatigue. This story is very personal for me as I have been proud to work with many of wounded warriors and civilian burn and polytrauma patients at the ISR. Read this book and recommend it to others!!!! ... show more

  • gave me so much more of an understanding and appreciation.
Format: Kindle
This autobiography was a real eye opener for me and a heart opener of what our service men and women face in today's war time. Did not have a clue as to what their service in the Mideast entailed until reading this. The experience over there is harrowing and what faces those who have been terribly injured , physically and emotionally, and have a longer lasting battle to face has been very educational. Thank God for supportive, loving, never-give-up spouses and other family members and organizations. I am a military wife, mother, sister and daughter but still learned so much about today's war experience and those challenges now experienced. Thank you for having the strength and determination to share. ... show more

Format: Kindle
An excellent, excellent book that describes in detail the problems facing our veterans coming home that have been injured in Iraq where the new forms of warfare are used on the troops. It describes the sounds, damage done to the human body, and therapies used to help our vets and what is trying to be done for PTSD victims among others and the horrendous burns done by the warfare now used and how they really suffer. Everyone thinks they have an idea, but until you read the book you can't possibly understand. The average person has no idea. My opinion, I don't think the government and politicians making decisions on behalf of the vets and their families does either. I real eye opener. MY opinion. A MUST READ! ... show more

  • I am not good at writing book reviews

  • A great story about leading after a combat injury
Format: Kindle
I listened to this book on audiobooks. Great story about combat, relationships, and helping our fellow veterans. One often overlooked issue that the book addresses is how combat injuries affect family members, especially children. The chapter on Uncle Sam's children provides great insight into how to help children of our injured heroes. ... show more
