  • Mac Users Rejoice: It Works...Period.
I have spent the last couple of years bemoaning the fact that my MacBook Air could not use two external displays at the same time. I have tried all manner of things (or so it felt), all to no avail. I scrounged and searched the internet for something...ANYthing...to achieve my goal. Many cheaper adapters promised big but failed to deliver, and I managed to amass quite a collection of useless bits and bobs that sat in a bin in my storage closet. The other day, after having given up the search for almost a year, I stumbled across a YouTube video declaring that my woes were soon to be over, and even demonstrated to me, in very clear, easy-to-follow directions, what I needed to purchase and how to go about installing it. I thought, "Could this really be true? Do my eyes deceive me, and do I dare get my hopes up that this could work for me, too?" I balked a little at the price tag, but kept reminding myself that my journey to find a way of having two large-screen external monitors had been a long and fruitless one. I pulled the trigger, delighted in the fact that I would soon find out if my latest sojourn into Monitor Driver Hell could potentially be over in the next 24 hours... When the Amazon delivery driver pulled up in front of my house a little bit ago, I literally met him at the door, such was my excitement. I came inside, ripped open the box, pulled out the adapter, went to Startech.com to find the driver I needed, and followed the instructions accordingly at installation. When my trusty MBA notified me it was finished, I grabbed the dongle, plugged it into my USB port, plugged in the HDMI cable to my secondary monitor that had spent all this time feeling left out of the mix because it wasn't connected to the same laptop, and magic happened: the screen came to life with an exact replica of my other screen! (This isn't what I wanted, and I had to go to my Settings to do some fiddling about, but I was simply in a state of near-ecstacy at the mere fact that my MacBook Air was, indeed, being displayed on two external monitors!!) I quickly discovered that my monitors were set up "backwards" from what I actually wanted (I wanted the monitor that sits directly in front of me to be my Primary display, with my second one used for moving windows out of the way but still remain open on the Secondary display), which involved a very easy fix: unplug the two HDMI cables, switch them around, and done! Next I unticked the box that says, "Mirror Display" so I could free up all those wonderful pixels of newly-found desktop real estate, and I swear I heard angels singing in exaltation! At last, I have joined the throngs of users that have two large, high-quality external monitors connected to their Mac notebook, with my notebook completely out of sight and no longer taking up valuable space on an already-smallish desk - and I feel like I just won some sort of prize. (I paid for the prize, sure, but nonetheless, I feel victorious at long last!) If you're on the fence about splashing out a bit for a dongle, this is NOT the one to second-guess yourself on. DO IT! You, too, will be singing Startech's praises for the foreseeable future! ... show more

  • I use an older 2015 MacBook Pro and this device plays nicely with the usb3
Style: Dual Monitor w/ DVI Pattern: Adapter Configuration: Single
This little external video adapter has made my job more convenient when working at my desk. I use an older 2015 MacBook Pro and this device plays nicely with the usb3.0 ports. My only gripe with this device is when I rotate my external displays to a portrait mode (vertical) the response time for one, or both, my screens lag where its incredibly noticeable. I contacted their customer support creating a ticket and their associates were polite and responded in a timely manner. However, after troubleshooting on both ends, we determined this is a current bug where they have no resolution at this point (3-3-18). They were able to replicate this issue on their end. So if you are looking for a video adapter to simply connect 2 monitors in landscape mode, you're golden. However, if you want to rotate your monitors in portrait (for reading articles or lines of code) then your experience won't be the most enjoyable. Still recommend. UPDATE 8/26/18: I no longer have any use for this device. For macOS, their past update (I believe 10.13.4) screwed up the functionality that prevent you from using monitors via usb cable. This has even affected other related software like Duet Display that allows you to use your iPad as a secondary monitor via lighting cable. If you are a Mac user, I would highly suggest staying away from this product. This is nothing against StarTech as I see the fault being Apples IMO. If you use a windows or linux based system I believe you are good. ... show more

  • Love it, after fixing sleep issue
Style: Dual Monitor w/ DVI Pattern: Adapter Configuration: Single
StarTech... if you're reading this, try to fix this, please! I even did analysis and found a workaround for you. The least you can do is take my assessment into account and resolve the issue. Minus 1 star for the fact DisplayLink/StarTech cannot introduce drivers/software to resolve the adapter sleep issue. If I had not figured a solution out on my own, this product would have received only 2-stars. This device is perfect, after I created a batch script to fix the issue where the two external monitors would stay asleep after the computer has been awaken. Will explain how to create your own after the "Cons" section below. Some people have mentioned this occurs to them once in a while. For me, the issue occurs most of the time after the computer wakes from sleep mode. Pros: 1) When functional, delivers perfect digital video/audio (audio on HDMI port only) to two external 1920x1080 monitors over a USB 2.0 connection. The device is connected to a hub, which also connects the keyboard and mouse. 2) Can display dvd quality to the two external monitors simultaneously, without too much cpu usage. 3) I can't speak for gaming, but my primary purpose is to use my laptop as a development machine. For development and other office functions, the adapter is more than adequate. 4) Works with Mac Mini running Lion OS as well. No wake-on-sleep issues, like I encountered on Windows 7 and 8 computers. 5) Self powered. No additional power required. 6) Customer service. They weren't able to figure out the issue, but at least they tried. Cons: 1) The two external monitors connected to the adapter typically do not function after the laptop (Windows 8) resumes from sleep mode. I would have to unplug and reattach the USB cable to re-enable the adapter. This is not a good solution, as I'm trying to minimize the wear to the USB port and it's a pain to physically unplug/reattach the USB cable. Fix: I contacted StarTech regarding my issue. They told me that I should disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the USB Hubs listed within the Device Manager section. Unfortunately, they ignored the fact I told them the issue occurs, REGARDLESS of whether I connect the adapter directly to the laptop OR via a USB hub. But, as I said before, they tried... btw... I did try their recommendation, even though I knew it would not work. It didn't work... Then, I performed some analysis of the processes running on my computer and discovered there is a Windows service that controls functionality and communication between the computer and the adapter... the DisplayLinkService. Through the Windows Services management console, I was able to re-enable the two external monitors by restarting the DisplayLinkService. Therefore, I created a batch file (FixDisplay.bat) and added the following three lines to the batch file and saved it to my desktop for easy access: sc stop DisplayLinkService sleep 2 sc start DisplayLinkService Let me explain each command, so you're aware of what's going on and to assure you this is not a malware script. First line stops the DisplayLinkService. Second line pauses the batch request to allow the stop batch request to complete. The final command line starts the DisplayLinkService. Now, whenever the external monitors do not wake up after the computer wakes from sleep mode, I simply double-click the FixDisplay.bat file that I saved to my desktop. Just a note... depending on your UAC setting, you might have to enable the batch file to run under an elevated account (i.e. Administrator), as the commands in the batch file start/stop an installed Windows service. The best solution would be if the drivers actually worked flawlessly to wake up the adapter properly. But short of DisplayLink and/or StarTech fixing this issue, my ad-hoc solution works. The solution definitely beats unplugging/reattaching the USB cable that is inaccessible. ... show more
