Description

This Compact Flash IDE adapter is a perfect solution for accessing CompactFlash (CF I, CF II) and IBM Micro Drive media, allowing you to access the flash/micro drive media as if it were an IDE hard drive. The CF/IDE adapter can be installed in the computer case through simple mounting in an available 3.5in drive bay, for connection to the computer IDE bus through either a 40 or 44-pin connection. Has worked great in two retro computers now

As much as I wanted to keep using old mechanical drives, they're just a dying breed and I needed to find a way to transfer files on and off my vintage PC builds more easily. Combined with smaller CF cards (you can still buy 32mb or 64mb CF cards new on Amazon), I got a 486 up and running with this quite easily. I had a really old 286 laptop that needed a little extra help in the BIOS to recognize it, but ultimately it works great there now too. Dunno what I'd be doing without this item. ... show more

Better than I expected

I bought this in lieu of a similar device at Monoprice because Monoprice wouldn't ship it in an ideal amount of time. The price is steeper than I'd like to pay but I was in for a nice surprise when I found out the item includes both a 3.5" bay adapter and a rear bracket adapter, allowing you to choose where to mount it. I wanted to mount it on the rear but conceded in order to get one in a timely fashion. Having the option was a good treat, meaning I can keep the front of my retro PC in a relatively single-tone. The card reader itself works great. I successfully installed Windows 98 on the 32GB CF card I bought and I intend to install Me and 95 on two other CFs I've got handy. ... show more

Great for a floppy drive bay
Size: CompactFlash Style: IDE
Good points: Comes assembled with 3.5" drive bay enclosure (mounts where your floppy drive would). Also has expansion slot bracket, so you can alternatively mount this at the back of a PC (where your PCI cards mount). Includes power connector adapter (converts IDE CDROM/Hard Drive power connector to the smaller floppy power connector which is required for power). Has Master/Slave jumper so you can set the CF card as required. Has 40 & 44 pin IDE connectors. Has DMA jumper to enable/disable DMA. Bad points: Doesn't have LED, but has 2-pin LED connector so you can connect your PC case's HD LED wires so you can see drive activity. As mentioned in another review the Ejection tab feels flimsy. I don't use the tab to eject the card - I pull it out by hand instead. In comparison to other CF>IDE adapters that I've used, this one doesn't have CF card voltage setting jumpers, although for most people this would not be required (CF card operates at 5V). Summary: It works for me. Remember that you can't use any CF>IDE adapter to hot-swap CF cards while in operation, data corruption or damage may result. Also if you're using a CF to replace a hard drive you want to avoid excessive writes to the CF card to extend the lifetime of the CF card (i.e. you don't want to put a swap file on a CF card!). ... show more

I bought this to use in my IBM Aptiva 2176 computer so that I could install windows 95 on a Compact Flash and since this is a drive that I can access from the front of the computer, I can install win 95 and win 98 on a different CF card or even ME on one. High quality CF adapter with lots of mounting options

Got this to replace hard drives in very old computers. Front mount makes for easy access. Cards slide in and eject smoothly. Build quality on chassis and PCB is excelent. Comes with a bracket so you can mount it in a card slot if you want, but you probably want to get this one so you can mount it in a front facing drive bay for easy access. ... show more

Work as expected. Great option but not cheap, 3d printed options are far cheaper but don't look anywhere near as good as these. Far more practical to use than the rear slot mounted ones, especially for machines where you are changing operating systems frequently.
