  • Works as advertised
Style: DVI Size: 2 Displays
The unit just works...eventually. I purchased one for a home office, to go between a laptop (on a docking station) and my gaming desktop. When i received the unit, my keyboard and mouse wouldn't work in the designated USB ports. They would, however, work in the general USB ports off to the side. I contacted tech support and they got me straightened out right away. It turns out, the unit was shipped to me with firmware version 1.04. As of this writing, the current firmware version is 2.12!!! After updating the firmware, which was a breeze, i moved my keyboard and mouse back to their home ports and everything worked perfectly! There's also lots of hotkeys available for this thing to customize how it's used, way more than i intend to use. But it has the basics: scroll lock + scroll lock + # to swap computers. That's all i needed. I'd suggest looking at the manual (available from Starview's website) before purchasing to get a good idea of it's full capabilities. IMPORTANT: Upgrade the firmware before you do anything else. To do this, download the "drivers" from [...] The firmware utility and instructions are in a subfolder called "upgrade". If it wasn't so easy to update the firmware, i would have taken one star away. The only con i can think of is the lack of cables, but i already had most of what i needed, so i knew what i was getting into. ... show more

  • Worked great...for about 7 months. Now its worthless.
Style: DVI Size: 2 Displays
Based on how long it actually worked I figure I spent around $30/month on this POS. I will have to find another product but I promise I will never by another one from StarTech again.

  • Not fancy, but it works
Style: DVI Size: 2 Displays
This KVM works for what I need. I wanted a simple way to connect my two monitors, one keyboard, one mouse to two computer towers (saves tons of room on my desk!). I am mostly on one computer during work hours and then switch to the other when I am done. The setup was easy - thanks to having read some of the reviews that emphasized purchasing all the necessary cords - and everything worked pretty much on the first try. I had some initial frustration with the keyboard and mouse being picked up, but after trying all the different USB slots, I figured out what worked. I noticed an issue with my computer not detecting the mouse when I had my WACOM tablet plugged into the KVM. The computer would not be able to find the mouse after switching from one comp and back with the tablet connected to the switch. It is easy enough to just plug the tablet directly into whichever computer I am working on, so I wouldn't say it is a huge issue. It does seem like my computer in slot 1 cannot pick up monitor 1 video signal if I switch back from comp2 after comp1 goes to sleep. This usually requires a reboot. It's not a huge issue and it might be a problem on the computer's side, not the switch's. Overall I'd say it does exactly what I need it to do and I am satisfied. ... show more

  • Cheap...and there's a reason.
Style: DVI Size: 2 Displays
About the only thing that was right about this unit was the price but even then, if something doesn't really work as advertised, no amount is "cheap" enough. First, as many people mention, this thing has no cables. So you're going to need 6 DVI cables, 3 audio cables, 3 USB cables etc. Coming up with the USBs wasn't a problem, but 6 DVIs and 3 Audio cables required additional purchases. However, I'm willing to forgive that if everything works as it should. Initially, after several frozen reboot sequences, I finally was able to get my 2 PCs to boot up and utilize the 3 screens I was using (2 DVI monitors, 1 hooked up via an HDMI > USB converter. My primary monitor had horrible green lines, flashing dots and other abnormalities which made viewing the monitor unbearable. I would have been okay with a couple of dead pixels, but this looked like how the movies portray a computer being "hacked". So it looked very bad and over the top. The 3rd screen I had hooked up via the HDMI>USB converter came on, but when switching back and forth between computers, sometimes the screen wouldn't come on and I'd have to fiddle with unplugging it and turning the monitor on and off to get it to work. Twice my computer mouse and keyboard stopped working. It only required me to unplug the USB cables from the KVM switch and plug them back in, but you can imagine that having something where your control inputs could die on you after the computer's screensaver comes on, or it wakes from sleep is a deal breaker. I'm giving this a 2 star simply because it MAY work for other computer configurations. Sometimes, I would unplug/replug in a monitor and the green lines would be greatly minimized, but after switching to my second computer and back, the green lines/scrambled picture would return. Note that the PC running Windows 8.1 performed slightly better with this switch, but my work computer running XP had the aforementioned issues in spades. I whole heartedly recommend the I/O Gear 2 port DVI dual monitor switch over this one. I installed it per instructions, turned on the computers and prepared for a long night of troubleshooting like the Star Tech one, only to find that the I/O Gear one booted right up, perfectly, works great, no artifacts, horizontal lines or dead/flashing pixels to be seen. ... show more
