    • Fantastic Remake; Support Star Fox, cynics!

I've played the original Star Fox 64 countless times over the past 29 years. Most recently I've revisited it using the fantastic PC recompilation on my Steam Deck (60+ fps, widescreen, visual mods, etc). Always loved the gameplay, the characters, the music, the scenarios. It's an evergreen game. This remake of it is fantastic. The same gameplay is there though feels slightly different. The visuals are amazing. The music is thrilling. The new cutscenes recontextualize events in the game and give a welcome explanation to why the characters choose to take one route or the other on their way to the end stage. I didn't expect this, it's not even necessary, but it works well and I enjoyed it through my several launch-day playthroughs. The only thing that sometimes falls flat is Falco's cynical commentary which sometimes doesn't seem to make sense, but overall the voice acting and team element is perfect. You may also miss the comical enemy voice acting which is now more subdued. You'll also notice slight variations in lines, new dialogue, scenarios playing out somewhat differently. I am of the mindset that remakes are best as reimaginings, so I loved all of the new surprises. I have not had a chance to try online gameplay - I'm not normally a competitive online gamer. But after trying out a bot match, I'm considering getting a Nintendo Online account to compete. I may even get the stupid camera and use the animated avatar. Because it's fun. If you love Star Fox and want to see it make a comeback, then there's no excuse not to buy this and enjoy it. If you're going to complain that it's "just another remake" and refuse to support it, that's fine, but you're not going to be a part of this franchise returning if they hopefully run with this into Star Fox 2 and beyond (if they don't, they're insane, because this sets up so much possibility for fun sequels, and they've reportedly gotten a lot of support for this relaunch). I understanding the cynicism. I am very cynical. I don't like most things. But I'm excited for what this relaunch does for this series and you've gotta support it or it's going to be the last time you see it. ... show more

Excellent remake of a classic with top-notch visuals. This one is definitely a can't-miss title for the Switch 2. It's Top Gun meets Star Wars, with a distinct and lovable cast of animal pilots. My husband is a big fan of the original game for Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 and he absolutely loves this remake. I never played much of the series myself, but I'm loving it too. The main campaign follows the same story as the original, complete with secrets to find and branching story options. In regard to the online battle mode, I could definitely see potential for a competitive scene/tournaments in the future, but it's also great to play casually with friends and it's super addictive! In terms of presentation, the graphical fidelity is outstanding—on par, if not exceeding the PS5's—and the soundtrack has been gorgeously arranged with a live orchestra, sounding like a score straight out of the cinema. We also bought a Nintendo 64-style controller as per my husband's request and he reports that it feels great to play with: same control scheme, but with even smoother handling. The only thing I don't really care for is the voice cast. It's just okay at best and somehow feels both overacted and stiff, reminiscent of a lot of English anime dubs. I grew up with the original on the SNES and I’ve played nearly every game in the series, and while I wanted a new game, this remake turns an already great game into near perfection. The controls have been polished to a mirror shine, the graphics are uncharacteristically beautifully detailed and cinematic for Nintendo, and the cutscenes genuinely add a ton to the characters and world. If you’re an absolute purist for the campy voice acting of the original then you may miss a few classic lines, but what you gain are new character moments, lore, and fixed continuity that achieves the original vision of the developers that technology and localization couldn’t give us before. It’s the best version of the best Star Fox game ever made, making it the new standard in my eyes for new games to come. Now make a new one! ... show more

    • A faithful, action-packed remake recommended for both new and old fans of Star Fox

If you need a reason to buy a Switch 2, here's another one. As someone who played Star Fox 64 a number of times as a child, this title interested me despite it being a true 1:1 of the original with an entirely new aesthetic, modernized controls, expanded lore, and beautiful animations. You can expect an easy 20+ hours of gameplay if you complete all the challenges, routes, and modes (campaign- normal + expert, challenges, battle/multiplayer). Also, the music is stunning and quite nostalgic. The gameplay itself is as fun and captivating as ever before with the visual upgrade. I have found some of the normal difficulty to be too easy, but the challenges and medals add some challenge. I have yet to dig into the challenge mode or expert mode. I would recommend this title for both new and old fans as it offers them both a considerable amount of value and introduction to a franchise that Nintendo will most likely grow further with games that build upon this one. I can't say much about coop or the multiplayer since I only play single player but the SP alone is worth the price of admission. ... show more

    • A Classic Revitalized with a Modern Coat of Paint

While this game is essentially Star Fox 64 but with a new coat of paint, that isn't a bad thing as Star Fox 64 is a REALLY great game. The added story context between each mission is a nice touch, but the new lore added isn't super groundbreaking (the characters in 64 show up here again, and nobody new is added to the lore, for example). That being said, it was nice to see the characters interact with each other more than just the quips in each level. The new voice actors are fine (I liked the main cast's new voices [Assualt still has the best version of Fox, though], but the bosses were voiced better in 64 since they were cheesier there). And if you're having issues with the game being too hard, there's an easy mode that allows you to keep a lot of your power-ups between levels (Hyper Lasers and Upgraded Shields) while reducing enemy health and preventing your wings from breaking. You do need a Day 1 patch to download that, but the game is completely playable prior to the patch anyway. Barring Area 6, which is tough by design, the game isn't super difficult to beat if you know what you're doing and have played a rail shooter before (unlike what one of the other reviewers claims). However, easy mode will make the game a cinch to beat if you activate it thanks to the buffs I mentioned. As for game length, like most Star Fox games, it's short. The value of the game comes from its replayable nature since you are aiming for its medals (get a high hit count while keeping your wingmen alive). Seeing that you have 16 levels (Venom is different if you come from Bolse vs. Area 6) and 25 different paths (though Titania is now only available if you get a Mission Complete instead of also being an option if you got Mission Accomplished in Sector X), it takes a while to try out all variations in this game and go through each level's alternate routes (Complete vs. Accomplished). Since I pre-ordered the game, I got it at the same price as the digital copy. I'm unsure if the price will go back up for post-launch listings, but it's totally worth the $50 price tag. Star Fox 64 is always a really great game, and this version is no different! Here's to this game selling well now and the franchise continuing in the future! Maybe we'll get Krystal to come back in the next game (who knows if Adventures will get remade next). ... show more

    • Very Addicting Multiplayer!

Disclaimer: The 4 star rating is due to Amazon's delay in delivery. The game itself is a fantastic remake of the classic original hitting me hard with nostalgia. **Amazon** I preordered to take advantage of the $10 discount. When I didn't initially receive the game on day 1 as expected, there must've been a glitch in their tracking system to tell me to expect it an entire month later because of unexpected delays at the shipping facility. I was unsure of when it would actually arrive, but they only made me painfully wait for 5 days. **StarFox** Absolutely 5/5 stars. The multiplayer alone is addicting! I've been spending countless hours every day since arrival. It's limited to 3 maps, but they've each got their own mechanics and strategy for the main objective. I can see them extending it with updates in the future. GameShare is compatible with the original Switch, so those of you who owned one and still held on to it can bring in a Player 2. The single player is equally as great, and has been revamped to tell a more complete story with expository logs to fill in additional lore. The challenges and expert mode gives the player a series of trials to achieve greatness as an ace Arwing pilot. The Co-Piloting controls take awhile to get accustomed to. You could even master the controls by oneself, which in theory would greatly outclass other players online because you can fly and shoot in two separate directions with extended peripheral reticle distances.     • Awesome Star Fox game!

Game is terrific. I've played other Star Fox games in the series and this game is exactly what I expected, this one is a great game. The graphics look great and updated. The tutorial section was tough, but you can skip it either because you think it's too tough, or if you've already played plenty of Star Fox games in the past and find it unnecessary. Once you're out of tutorial mode, the game plays exactly like a Star Fox game should. They've made Star Fox look like the cameo appearance in the recent Mario 2 movie and he looks great. All the characters have been updated so they look more realistic and not as cartoon-like in past games- they look great, although they looked great the other way in older games too. A lot more story has been integrated into it and so it takes longer to get into missions than it used to, but it plays well. Then if you're reattempting something you can skip some stuff by holding down the skip button, but you can't skip some of the lengthier story sections if you just want to jump into the missions mode. I haven't finished the campaign yet, but it's been really fun so far. There are other modes I have not tried yet: two player local mode (one plays pilot and other is the gunner), multiplayer dogfight mode, and challenge mode. If you've liked Star Fox games in the past, or really liked Star Fox in Mario movie 2, you'll really like this Star Fox game. I was able to get it from Amazon on a preorder sale price so that made it a great value, $49. Glad I got it on sale. Probably if you're a big Star Fox fan even regular price is fine. But I hope more physical NS2 games are released at the lower price point of $49+. Highly recommend this Star Fox video game. ... show more
