  • Easy to Install, Fantastic Temperature Management
Installed this on my Weber Performa charcoal grill this past Sunday. I set up the kettle for indirect cooking, fired up some charcoal in a chimney starter and set the Venom for a temp of 375. Plunked a well seasoned 5lb chicken onto the grill, closed the cover and then let the Venom do it's thing. I'm extremely impressed at how well this device is able to manage temps in my Performa Grill, truly a set it and forget it. When I first put the full load of charcoal in ( I was using my Vortex for this cook) the heat immediately spiked up to almost 600 degrees. I set the Venom to 375 and let the grill settle down. I opened the cover once just before placing my roast chicken on the grill to let out some of the excessive heat. Once that was done, the Venom took over..... Over the entire cook the temp stayed pretty consistent to my set temp of 375. The highest it went to was about 5 to 6 degrees above set temp, with the lowest temps about 10 to 12 degrees below set temp. Very impressive performance considering it was an early spring day in New England with some blustery wind and a cool 50ish degrees. This type of weather can be very challenging for cooking with charcoal. I work in the retail appliance industry and can tell you, most electric stoves will have oven temps that will vary by an average of 10 degrees, gas stoves can vary by as much as 20 or more. So the performance of the Venom was as good if not better than any electric or gas range out there....... Installation was quite simple, there is nothing to drill or screw. No permanent modifications needed at all. I could go back home tonight, remove the Venom and re install the factory ash catcher no problem. The wifi set up was easy enough, just make sure you have your wifi network "key" ready, you will need to input it as part of the set up. Once installed and connected the app ran well, my only complaint, if my phone went into sleep mode it would disconnect from the venom and I'd have to re-connect it before it would allow me to look at the status of the Venom or make changes. I did not use the Venom's food probe for this, my first cook, instead I relied upon my equally high tech and trusted "Meater" wireless temp probe. The app has several "how to" videos that I think are un-necessary and make navigation (at least my initial experience) more confusing that it needs to be. Spider Grill folks.... move the videos to the web site. I'll need to use the app a bit more before being able to really give it a complete review. That said, once set up and connected it did what it needed to do. Over all, I give this two thumbs way way up !! The Venom temperature controller makes cooking with my charcoal gill an absolute pleasure. Now I spend more time on my cooking and less time worrying about the "cook". Absolutely a Great Job Spider Grill !! ... show more

  • Sleek, good-looking product. Very responsive customer support
This product has a beautiful, sleek and thoughtful design that brings back life into your old weber kettle. It holds and controls temperatures extremely well allowing for more efficient use of charcoal. It’s a “set it and forget it” type of product. They were VERY responsive when I had issues with initial connectivity with the app and faulty battery. Jeremiah (from the videos himself) was very understanding and gracious in getting that squared away. The battery (optional) is super helpful, magnetic and has holds a long charge. The interface on the app and the unit itself is very simple but allows you to effortlessly set food and ambient temperatures, pausing the fan when opening the lid to prevent overshooting once closed, and even directs you how much to open your air vent pending the desired cooking temp. The app allows for wifi control which is helpful if you’re off doing something else. They also have a facebook page where they frequently interact with customers or anyone sitting on the fence. I’ve done briskets, dinoribs, rotisserie chicken, you name it. So far comes out perfectly cooked each time. I’m back to smoking and grilling every week. It’s a fun and easy-to-use product made a by terrific American company in Georgia. ... show more

  • Spider Grill Venom Rocks!
The media could not be loaded. I have 3 Spider Grill Venom units. They make life easy for long smoke sessions or getting up to temperature for searing steaks, hot and fast wings, it does it all. Did a brisket last night and it hummed along at 225f while it was 18 degrees out. Spider Grill is an awesome company. Highly recommend the and the Venom. ... show more

  • It works and is well built. Couple of issues but well worth the expense.
I'd give the unit 3.5 stars, not 4 but I can't and marking it 3 stars is not accurate. it's better than 3 stars. I bought this to smoke using 2 different woods for larger gatherings. I use mesquite for all meats other than poultry and fish and I do not have 2 dedicated smokers, but do have a kettle so here I am. Does the unit work, yes Do I think it going to last, yes Would I recommend, yes with caveats. If you don't have a dedicated smoker or something designed for both grilling and smoking, buy one. This unit will do if you don't have the room for both a charcoal grill and a smoker but is not really a substitute in my opinion. The box was very beat up during shipping and I was worried until I opened the box. The Venom was packaged extremely well and nothing was damaged! WiFi and app were easy to setup and I haven't had any connectivity issues so far. First couple of uses were grilling, burgers and a couple of reverse seared steaks. Being able to start a chimney of charcoal, dump and level the charcoal and let the Venom do its thing holding the charcoal at 200° while I was prepping the other dishes was great. Turned temp up with app 10 minutes before the meat needed to go on and all was well. I smoked ribs and a chuck roast next and had mixed results. I use fire brick for indirect cooking in my kettle. The Venom doesn't seem to like indirect cooking with the bricks for some reason. I had +/- 15 to 20 degree temp swings. I removed my fire bricks about 1/2 way through the rib cook and it settled down. Not a deal breaker because I didn't have to go outside every time it happened but annoying none the less. There are 3 problems I've found with the unit so far. 1st issue, the power cord is extremely short. Warning labels on the unit and common sense say to keep it 2 ft. away from anything flammable and that's hard to do with a 4 ft. power cord. I cut the cord and added in a 4 ft. section and that problem was fixed. 2nd and 3rd issues are related: The unit is 18 volt – 2.0a. I have a Master Built Gravity 560 and it is 12 volt. I can use a power bank and 5v to 12v step up USB cable to power it. They don’t make a USB cable that can handle the up conversion from 5v to 18v - 2.0a, best I found was 18v - .05a. 12v would have made sense 18v does not, unless there are reasons they needed 18v! My 1st guess is they decided to make a battery that can really only use on their unit and costs $60, oh they did. Again, a fixable issue with a Power Wheel adapter for an 18v DeWalt battery and a couple of quick disconnects. 3rd issue. The fan is very small and needs to spin very fast to move the CFM needed to operate, hence the reason for 18v-2.0a. This also makes the fan extremely loud. Almost leaf blower loud when using at higher temps. I'm exaggerate but not by much. I was VERY surprised the 1st time I turned it on. ... show more
