  • A pretty good film with some violence
Rod Cameron is the star of the 1954 color film “Southwest Passage.” He plays a man who is surveying the way to California. He takes 4 camels along with several Arab keepers to show that while horses and mules will not be able to go thru the desert, people can use camels to transit it. He is very altruistic and makes a positive impression on the characters played by John Ireland and Joanna Dru. The latter two and the brother of the character played by Dru, rob $20,000. They are pursued by a large posse. The brother is shot. Dru stays to care for him while encouraging the John Ireland character, her lover, to disguise himself as a doctor and join the caravan led by Rod. The brother dies, Dru rushes after the caravan and joins John and the caravan. She is impressed by Rod and tells John they must give up their illegal ways. The film is pretty good. As it moves west, it is pursued by Indians, runs out of water, looses a camel, a mule driver in the caravan insists that John give him half of the $20,000, a leading member is bitten by a poisonous animal and John, still disguised as a doctor, is unable to help him. ... show more

  • Solid little Western repays viewing
Rod Cameron always seemed to play second-fiddle to more significant Western actors like Randy Scott, Audie Murphy and Joel McCrea. Yet he starred in several entertaining films, some of which have recently been released from the vaults (cf. the Monogram Cowboys, vols. I and 2). SOUTHWEST PASSAGE is solid entertainment, with good photography and action, a fine supporting cast, and well worth viewing. Cameron made films for a number of companies. Several he did with Republic were once available on VHS--let's hope that some of them (e.g., BRIMSTONE, RIDE THE MAN DOWN, OH SUSANNA, SAN ANTONE, etc.) will be released soon on DVD. In the meantime, enjoy SOUTHWEST PASSAGE. ... show more

  • Good to see Rod Cameron!
It is great that Rod Cameron westerns eventually are released. This one here is not one of the best though. It is a bit boring with too little action and Cameron himself seems a little bored. The credits go to John Ireland who is good as the on and of good and bad guy. The picture quality is not totally sharp but acceptable. I think I would have expected better from an MGM release. ... show more
