  • Stunning Truck Simulator
Style: Snowrunner Pattern Name: Snowrunner
I can certainly recognize the brilliance of games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, and both currently have a 97 on Metacritic. However, every once in a while, a game comes along that appeals on a much deeper level. Such is the case for me with Snowrunner. Games like Snowrunner, Witcher 3 and Skyrim aim higher and create a larger, more immersive world. The downside is that they are a lot looser than Zelda and Mario and a whole lot buggier (more on that later). Snowrunner is an open-world, sandbox, driving game, with real world physics. You perform missions and contracts in the worst driving conditions imaginable, plowing through mud, into deep water, up the side of mountains and, of course, through massive amounts of snow. One mistake and you can end up completely stuck in knee deep muck or flipped on your side. The game can be VERY frustrating early on but does got easier as you get better trucks and more upgrades. It also gets easier when you learn the paths to take and the ones to avoid. That doesn’t mean the game ever gets easy and there are sections where you can expect to creep along almost regardless of the truck you use. There is no best truck in the game because the truck that can get through a section easiest may be completely useless for the mission you are performing, so it helps to have a decent fleet of trucks to choose from. Snowrunner is a port from the PC and the graphics are understandably downgraded. There is a lot of obvious pop up and fogging in the distance. However, when I grade the game against other Switch games I think it looks magnificent. I adore the rural landscape, particularly in Michigan. Russia and Michigan look like the aftermath of some natural disaster. Russia, in particular, looks like it’s had a serious flood and much of the water remains. You’re just slogging your way through deep mud, often at a snail’s pace, just praying your vehicle will keep moving. Each of the three regions has four subsections and these are pretty big areas. I’d estimate that it probably would take a good 10 to 15 minutes to drive from one corner of the map to another, and that’s if you’re moving at a good speed. I won’t deny that it could become a bit tedious when driving the same route sometimes dozens of times. Games like Snowrunner can continually surprise the player, and such is the beauty of sandbox games featuring real world physics. I’ve seen videos of moments of insane physics but generally these are from modded trucks on the PC. I don’t think you can create modded vehicles on the Switch. The craziest thing I saw was a tanker trailer hovering about 15 feet in the air. Gameplaywise it didn’t matter because when I tried to attach it simply dropped to the ground. There are other problems that are far more serious. The game has serious problems with asset management, and I have had innumerable trucks entirely disappear from my inventory. Given that each truck represents a significant amount of money it can be a pretty devastating hit to your finances to have a truck vanish. I’ve also had tons of trucks magically clone themselves which has recouped some money and frequently one truck will disappear, replaced by a clone. These kinds of things always happen when I restart the game after shutting it down. I’ve also had countless trailers disappear and given that a trailer can be worth an upwards of 13k or more it’s a ton of money to lose. Poor asset management is EASILY my biggest issue with the game and literally caused me to consider quitting the game several times. Snowrunner currently has a 75 Metacritic score on 8 professional reviews and a 6.3 User Score from 9 users. The XOne, PS4 and PC are all in the very low 80’s. Those scores are absurd. There is something seriously wrong with game reviews when a tedious, two-hour game like Going Home can get an 88 or a home brew like Undertale can get a 93 while a magnificent, technical achievement like Snowrunner basically gets a passing grade. I’m not a total completionism but I do like to get my monies worth and I managed to 100% all three regions. I didn’t do all the achievements but that’s more for people with OCD. There is more than enough content in the core game to justify the cost and if you love it you can get the DLC that runs about $25 per year. If there is another entry in the series, I wouldn’t even hesitate to get it. Well, maybe I’d let early players shake out the inevitable bugs. *I got the Year one DLC and OH MY GOD is it hard. At this point I can have any truck I want fully upgraded and the DLC is STILL far more difficult than the core game. The volume of content rivals the core game and it appears that this is the way Saber Interactive is going to continue the series rather than release new games. I assume they will release a brand new game when new systems come out. Unfortunately, the asset management is at least as bad in the DLC and there is a new and terrible problem. Pop up was all over the place in the core game, but it was just an aesthetic problem. Here, it is a major gameplay issue. Elements not only pop up in the distance but also inches from your truck. Sometimes right under your truck. I’ve flipped my truck many times because I hit a rock that wasn’t there a split second ago which means I always have to be careful about my speed in certain areas. This is not good. Snowrunner is so close to magnificence but these bugs and graphical issues really hurt the experience. Let’s hope they can correct it eventually. ... show more

  • Why isn’t this game more popular!?!
Style: Snowrunner Pattern Name: Snowrunner
My son loves trucks and hates pokemon so Nintendo started out average for him. He loves this game and it’s realistic gameplay. I would say that it’s suited for older kids because the game menus and options are very complex, but the driving around is fine for younger kids

  • Woah! I was not expecting this!
Style: Snowrunner Pattern Name: Snowrunner
I’ve been looking for a driving game where I can explore open world-style, without worrying about joining races or being on the edge of my seat. In other words, a way to relax and unwind within a game world. In Snowrunner, I found that. But, I had no idea I’d dive in as deep as I have. To put it into perspective, I’m a metroidvania, jrpg and simulation fanboy. Those comprise some of my most well-loved and well played games since childhood. And yet, somehow, I’ve sunk more time into this game than anything I’ve ever played. Breath of the Wild shows I’ve invested around 120 hrs of well-earned time toiling around the landscape and discovering every nook and cranny. But this game? I’m currently at 195 hrs. And the crazy part? I don’t even think I’m halfway through. It’s the epitome of “just five more minutes” …then an hour later I have to force myself to walk away. It’s just that good. I wanted to provide a new update as of 2/21/23: Even though I’ve completed nearly every map (including 8 seasons of DLC), I still feel the urge to keep playing and keep completing missions. I’ll confess I have stopped off and on to enjoy other games as they’re released, but I always find myself wanting to go back into the world of Snowrunner. I’ve now logged over 345+hrs, which seems unthinkable. It’s officially the most I’ve ever played a single game. And the best part? There’s more DLC on the way for 2023. I can’t wait! ... show more

  • Wow!!!!!!

This is what gaming is all about, I've played every game I can think of and beaten them all. The simulation and just portability on the switch takes it to another level. Tons of things to do and loads of fun whether your a grown man or child. The graphics could be better but it doesn't matter, you will get addicted to this game and from find it hard to put down, what seem impossible on the real world now possible at the palm of your hands. Trucks and upgrades is what it's all about on this game, can buy downloadable content with new maps and vehicles to increase the gameplay. Every world is unique and every vehicle has it's flaws but that's what makes it a great, pick and chose wisely with every mission or you find yourself starting over again. Cant recommend this game enough, buy it and I promise you'll be up late at night trying to finish that last mission. These game developers should get an award, they went above and beyond the call of duty to give us what we wanted as little boys trucks and mud what more do want ... show more

  • Be Warned, This Is Not A Casual (or Easy) Game
Style: Snowrunner Pattern Name: Snowrunner
If you are looking for a casual and perhaps even simple simulation game, this is not it. The “missions” (contracts, routes, objectives) are slow going and difficult. Expect to spend hours, and to fail more than once, making a delivery. The most frustrating part of the experience though is in the menus and the garage mechanics. It’s very convoluted to switch between worlds and to get your trucks in and out of the garage. You’ll understand if you pick this up, immediately following the tutorial when you go to Alaska. I think I ended up having to reboot just to get my truck back. I still don’t understand. The game is just a bit of a mess. The devs might have been overthinking it a bit! I’ll keep trying but honestly I think this might be the first game ever that I give up on. ... show more
