I love this thing. I got it for my son, but I think I have been enjoying much much more than him! Even if you don’t want to learn to play actual songs, it’s just nice to sit around and strum when you’re watching tv or have time to kill. There is an app that you can download for it, so you can mount your phone and learn to play songs. It’s kind of like Guitar Hero, where the notes “flow” toward the kalimba and you strum them as they reach you. The app has a button to click to switch the language to English, but some of the options still don’t translate. This does not hinder you in any way from using it though. I used the menu for kids songs, and was happy to see some easy favorites like “You are my Sunshine”, “Mary had a little lamb”, and “Twinkle Twinkle little star” just to name a few. The construction of this kalimba is solid. It’s a good quality instrument that will last a long time. It has instructions for how to go about tuning it, but there are a variety of apps out there you can use if you don’t like what the manufacturers recommend. If you don’t like the app they supply with it, there are other kalimba apps out there that work just as well. Very good and FUN product. Highly recommend.

The instrument itself is interesting, and I wanted to learn to play it. It comes with a year of access to their app, but that is when the fun went away. You can set the app to English, but only after some message that comes up in Chinese requires you to answer, and you can’t cancel the dialog. I think I quit and restarted, and then got to a point where I could select English. However, most of the app is still in Chinese, including the lessons. I tried to start the lessons, and it seems from context that you need to choose to download them, but once I did that, I didn’t find a way to start the lesson. I did somehow manage to start some of the songs from the library, which also require downloads but eventually we’re able to start. The songs play like Guitar Hero where the notes fall down and you are supposed to hit the keys at the right time. It is pretty effective, though it doesn’t line up perfect with my phone. Some of the tracks have musical accompaniment, which is great. The phone clip, however, doesn’t screw in tight enough to keep the clip upright, so I have to play on my desk to keep the phone oriented correctly. If I understood the app, I would probably enjoy the experience more. Also, the app doesn't seem to remember your login information, so you have to retype the random userid and password they give you if the app is restarted. Not cool...

Corrected Version: I'm not sure about the exact type of wood used, but this kalimba produces a wonderfully soothing sound. The instrument itself is well-finished, with my particular one being a dark wood with a glazed finish. The keys are easy to use and it even comes with a tuner. There's also a separate mechanism for setting up a mobile phone with it, although I don't personally use that feature much as it adds some weight to the kalimba. Additionally, the package includes rubber thumb caps for added protection. With these rubber tips, you can play the kalimba for longer periods without discomfort

Okay, so this musical gadget has always interested me. My friend had one as a youth that I played around with... not well, but not horribly. So, when I saw this, I decided to give it another try. I have many relatives and friends that are musically talented, including my Hubby (drums), so yea... I tinkered with a piano when younger, but my fingers are short and not ideal. A thumb piano seems a better fit. The wood is put together well and sturdy, as are the metal keys. Overall, well-made. It comes with everything shown in the description and the attached photos... all are well-made, though the plastic phone holder could be of a better quality. I played around with it, just making stuff up and it was fun. I'm glad there's an app, and the ability to hook it up to my phone to follow along. I'm making tiny steps, but so far, I'm enjoying learning a new interest. My hands are arthritic so slow and easy is the way to go. I plan on keeping it, perhaps getting good at it, but if not, I've got a ton of nephews and nieces that would love it. Time will tell.

Okay, the Kalimba itself is gorgeous. The wood is smooth, tasteful, and undamaged. The keys shine, each note marked and numbered. And that sound—hollow like a wind chime but full of the same haunting, captivating tone a xylophone makes. I adore it. Now, let's talk about this App. It's easy to install but it is in Chinese and no.. you can't change it to English. Fortunately, for the most part, you can figure it out without too much trouble. The App does require a subscription but the first year is free, which I think is plenty of time to figure out if you'll want to keep it enough to pay. Is it an easy instrument to learn? About as easy as any, I'd say, but the marked notes help. This beauty would make a wonderful gift for yourself, beginners, and long time musicians for any occasion.
