I write and journal a F*@# TON, and tend to go through notebooks and journals rather quickly, so I've been shopping around for substitutes for some of the Moleskine notebooks I frequently use. In particular, the 3pack Cahier journals. I've purchased a number of alternatives/substitutes recently (I'll post reviews when those items arrive) and among them were these Simply Genius softcover journals. They come 6 to a pack, whereas the Moleskine Cahiers come 3 to a pack, and in terms of looks, are very similar to the Moleskines (Image 1). The stitching (Image 2- Simply Genius on the left, Moleskine on the right) is even identical. As far as durability and how well the stitching holds, I'll let you know once I've put the Simply Genuis notebooks to use. One noticeable difference is the size. The Simply Genuis books are a bit wider than the Moleskines. (Image 3- Simply Genuis on the bottom, Moleskine on top.) So you get a little extra surface area on the page with these, which for some people, may or may not be much of a deal, but I thought it worth noting. Lastly, the lined pages of the notebooks vary only subtly. (Image 4- Simply Genius on the Left, Moleskine on the right.) The Simply Genius' lines are a tad wider, but not by enough to make a difference. At least not to me. Also, the Moleskines have more header space at the top of each page. Again, a minor difference, and one that doesn't matter to me. While a good substitute for writing and note-taking, the Simply Genuis does lack one notable feature of its Moleskine counterpart. They don't have the inner pocket on the back cover. But that's an easy fix. All you need is some glue and sturdy paper and you can easily fashion one for yourself. (If need be and/or desired.) The simply Genuis books also do not have detachable pages like the Moleskine. The last 16 pages of the Moleskine Cahiers are detachable. The only other difference worth mentioning is that the Moleskine does appear to have the sturdier cover of the two. It feels denser, more durable than the Simply Genuis but not by much. As far as paper weight goes, they feel to be about the same thickness, but beyond that, there's not much I can say. Once I've put the Simply Genuis books to use I can give you a better idea of the quality of the Simply Genuis' paper. Minus the slight differences, I think the Simply Genuis notebooks are a great product for the price. They aren't perfect copies of the Moleskine softcover journals, but they will make for an adequate substitute if the Moleskines are outside your price range. ... show more

Not exactly what I wanted, but it will work. Sohospark seems to be out of stock on refills, so I went searching for substitutes. This fits without trimming even though I think it was designed to be a standalone writing pad. I want to use my fancy leather cover because I'm pretentious. It's thinner than I wanted. Off-white paper closer to the yellow shades. Lined college ruled spacing, A5 paper size. The wider space at the bottom seemed like it should be on top, but that puts the 'made in China' stamp upside down (figures). My limited fountain pen collection is represented in the pictures. Glides ok. Minimal bleed through. Fountain pens are notorious for bleed through so roller balls should be ok. ... show more

I wanted journals that were good for note taking and travel light and these are just perfect! Well made, nice feeling soft covers, very light but the paper is not at all like tissue. Off white color, which I prefer to the blinding bleach white pages. They're thin and flexible, but sturdy and well put together. The bindings are strait and solid on all the books, a couple of them are closer to the side than the others but they're still strait and flush with the paper. Everything is cut in uniform, no pages stick out or anything like that. Some of the lines don't all match up perfectly when the books are closed, at first glance it looked like they were all over the place and I was worried the pages were all messed up, but page by page, they're the same size and quality clear lines and honestly, what book has ever had perfect alignment. But why would you? I go through a lot of notebooks. A lot. For the longest time, it was Moleskine and alternatives were difficult, if not impossible to find. The way I use notebooks makes it both essential and expensive to have and keep a dozen or so going at any given time. Enter Simply Genius. They have been a godsend to my bank account. These are effectively the same notebooks you'll purchase under another name and a higher price. The paper quality is similar if not the same, and since we're taking notes and not creating fine art, it's good enough. The notebooks are stictched together well and have a fairly heavy soft cover. The only thing missing is the pocket in the back of the notebook. If that pocket it worth double the price, more power to you, but as for me, I'm perfectly happy with Simply Genius Travel Journals. ... show more

I study and read constantly. At times I like to keep something in which I can track notes from a book I’m reading or a topic I’m studying. And I like to keep the book focused on just one topic. These are a great size for that. Plus I use them for my daily journaling l, put a date on the outside so I can track with them. I love the size because it doesn’t overwhelm me. Large journals make me feel like I have to write a lot. And I can complete my journal writing over a period of months or a year without feeling intimidated by the size of the journal and therefore is a push to write more. I was hoping for a bit sturdier construction and if the cover was thicker they may have been ok. Its more like having a cheap pad of paper stapled inside a cover made of craft or construction paper than a "book" or "notebook". They'll do the job and the price was fair. I just will likely buy something sturdier that will weather daily use better. ... show more
