This is a nice bookcase. It's made of rubberwood, which isn't used for fine furniture, but is a hardwood somewhat similar to ash or maple in terms of density and ability to take a stain. As solid wood, it's definitely a step above particle board and veneer. Anyone who examines it closely isn't going to mistake it for a vintage piece of mid-century modern furniture, but it really does look the part and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's quite sturdy, and the pieces fit together snugly and securely. Assembly is a bit time-consuming -- it took my son and me the better part of a couple of hours because there are a lot pieces to put together -- but it's not complicated and the instructions are clear enough. We bought 2 of these bookcases for our den, and they hold lots of books while not making the room appear crowded. We downsized to a smaller house and are happy to find such good quality bookcases at a reasonable price. They are beautiful and very well made. Love the drawers on the bottom and they hold lots of stuff. They also provide lots of room for knick knacks on top. I can't recommend these bookcases highly enough! ... show more

I bought several pieces from this line and this is my favorite. As others mentioned, the stickers are are a real pain to remove (I just left them and covered them using books). Also, be careful when assembling. If you over tighten the screws, the wood will crack and the veneer will flake off. You might even break some of the hardware so be careful not to muscle it. I was really skeptical of this shelf. The price and claim of real wood seemed too good to be true. Honestly, I was kind of expecting a piece of sh**. I was pleasantly surprised. A good portion of it is real wood. The other parts are indistinguishable from the real wood and are not used in obvious places/places where real wood would be beneficial. Instructions are good. Way better than IKEA’s. Assembly was pretty easy - except 1 BIG thing, explained later. Took me less than an hour and I’m no pro. Two tips: 1. Don’t over tighten anything. You don’t have to over-torque any cam or bolts for it to be sturdy. 2. To make it a little stronger, use a little wood glue on the screws, joints,… BUT NOT on the cams. BIGGEST COMPLAINT - they put a big white and orange warning sticker on the inside, near the top. Really obvious placement. Who the heck wants to look at that?! It literally took a lot longer to get the sticker and adhesive off than it took to assemble the shelf! I peeled off the sticker inch by inch but the backing remained. Then I had to scrape that off inch by inch with my fingernail. Then you’re stuck dealing with the adhesive!! HINT #3 - do not use a chemical to remove the adhesive. It will mess up the varnish. Loop a piece of packing tape or duck tape (adhesive side out) and quickly stick it on and pull it off until the adhesive is gone. Too bad they put that dang sticker on there, otherwise I would have given them 5 stars. Aside from that it’s a good value. ... show more

We got this to match the sideboard/bar by the same brand. Both are solid, gorgeous pieces! Sturdy, heavy piece, but still looks light and modern to me. (Well, mid-century modern ;-)) The pieces were well packed, just really heavy and the box was a bit beat up - there was a very small chip on the back of one of the pieces, but once assembled you can't see it. Many steps, and you will need plenty of room, but assembly instructions are easy to follow and extra hardware included. Shelves are taller than anticipated and actually hold more than we thought so that was a pleasant surprise. (We have a tall room so we also use the top as shown in pic). I love it! ... show more

When they say solid, this is solid, it's all real wood, no flakeboard or pressboard junk...even the back is thin plywood instead of cardboard. I was a bit apprehensive at first for the cost, but I am comfortable that it was worth it. I will add that it is laminated wood, full thickness boards edge-glued (if you look close, it looks like a wood floor) but they did a good job with tone matching and no boards jump out. Everything went together easy and a full set of extra bit was included (one each of every piece of hardware). Packaging was well done, no damage, it is a bit heavy though. ... show more

The box arrived intact. As I was unpacking the pieces, I noticed that a lot of them had minor damage or flaws. To be expected with flat pack furniture. Simplihome makes much of the fact that this is a "solid wood" bookcase. What it is is many small pieces of wood glued together (much like bamboo wood). That means that there are lots of places for the wood to become compromised. And it was. I worry about this holding up over time and how it will respond to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Other issues--the drawer bottoms and backing on the bookcase are very flimsy. I reinforced the bottom of the drawers with wood glue and put drawer liner in there to protect the bottom. There were quite a few cracks in the wood and places where the joined pieces were starting to warp or didn't lie flat. The stickers that are on each piece are difficult to remove and leave a residue. The little plastic pieces that cover the cam locks are not a good match for the wood stain. Assembly was straightforward, if time-consuming. No missing pieces, no misaligned holes. Finished product is sturdy and beautiful. I love how it looks in my space. I don't regret my purchase, I just think it should be about $100 less. If you can get it on sale, I'd absolutely recommend it. ... show more
