I wanted a solid wood bookcase (plywood is ok in parts, so long as there's no particle board). This is it, and it looks very nice (first photo). The instructions are reasonably clear (I could have used a better diagram of how the tip-over prevention works, but I think I got it right). There were a few things that made me drop a star here and there, although my overall rating is still 5-star. The description says it's a 30" wide bookcase. That's true only if you count the molding around the top. The actual shelves are 24" wide. There's a few pieces of extra hardware, a nice touch. The non-removable shelf in the middle uses a funny kind of screw in the left and right panels, with a camlock in the middle shelf. I think the screw holes could have been a tad larger, as all of the screws broke off a little bit of the wood (second picture). The screws don't seem to go in exactly straight, but they're close enough and the assembly at that point is fine. The top and bottom shelves attach with ordinary screws (Allen wrench, not Phillips head!). The instructions say not to overtighten. I was hand tightening only, but a couple of the screws seemed to get easier to turn at the end--that's usually an indication that the screw has damaged the wood, either from being tightened to tight or because the wood is too soft. As others have mentioned, when you attach the back, there are screw holes in the back, but no screw holes in the side pieces. I used a 7/64" drill to drill all the holes, lest I split the wood. Drilled two diagonally opposite holes, put in those screws, then drilled the remaining holes. Be careful not to drill too far--the piece you're drilling into is not that thick, you can accidently drill all the way through it. Likewise when you drill a hole for the tip-over bracket Others have mentioned the unsightly stickers. There's one on the right side piece, and this is the chief problem. The paper peeled off ok, but it left a gluey residue that I didn't succeed in completely removing. There are lots of stickers on the back, but they go on the side that faces the wall, so if they don't come off it's no big deal. (There are also small stickers on the side pieces pointing forward, but they're hidden by the shelves when you assemble it.) Others have also mentioned the Styrofoam. One piece had given its life protecting the wood, but that meant I had to remove statically charged tiny pieces of foam from the wood. The easiest way to get these off is to use tape (or the stickers). Delivery was a bit odd. It went out for delivery on a Friday, which usually means it's on the truck that goes by your house. But they didn't deliver that day, I had to wait until Monday. And boy is it heavy! I do wish it had come in two boxes, but I managed. I got this on sale, which differentiated it from all the other bookcases. If I could buy another one at that sale price, I would. But it's nice at any (reasonable) price. ... show more

This is very nice for the price. The black was more heavily discounted for some reason. The box is heavy so you may want help bringing it inside. Assembly is easy, just take your time. As some have mentioned, the back screws that hold the rear panel have no holes in the wood where they screw in. I also recommend that with the cabinet face down, align the rear panel on it, and use a small drill bit make pilot holes for each screw. This is a very sturdy solid wood cabinet, so it looks a lot nicer than the MDF wood ones to me. ... show more

This is a very nice, strong dry bookcase with a classic design. It was easy to assemble. When it arrives, that box is heavy! I was here to receive the delivery and had it dropped in the garage where I unpacked it and brought the pieces inside in small batches. My one caution is that the color as it appears on the website photos is not exactly the color. I ordered Russet Brown because the next lightest shade, Hickory, looked too light. In fact, the Russet Brown was too dark for my living room. Luckily, it worked well in the bedroom where I also needed a better bookcase. I’d like to see if the company can send color samples. It would be a hassle to return. If the color was more reliable, I’d give this five stars. ... show more

    • SHOP AROUND - YOU CAN DO BETTER!

Once you unpack this bookcase and start to assemble it, you will realize how substandard it is, but by then it will be too late to return it. SimpliHome Furniture is overpriced for the quality of the item and the frustrations you will encounter trying to put it together. (We paid $272.99.) Quality control at SimpliHome is Simplipoor. CONS: 1. Wood was split in a highly visible spot (eye level) when the factory pre-drilled a pilot-hole needed to attach the top. SimpliHome shipped the piece regardless. 2. Eyesore labels are pasted onto visible portions of the bookcase. When you try to remove them, the paper shreds, leaving parts of the label glued to your furniture. You can't use water or solvent to clean up the mess because that would damage the varnish. Other manufacturers print labels on plastic that peels off in one piece! 3. This bookcase should have been easy to assemble, but due to misalignment of parts, it was not. To get the allen key screws to “bite” you need to exert quite a bit of force - but it's hard to do using the little allen key provided. Fortunately Papa Bear has a small battery powered screwdriver with an allen bit that fits into these tight spots. Without it, assembly would have taken hours longer. 4. The backing is extremely thin - about 1/8 of an inch - and it is warped into a stiff curve. They punched holes around the edges of the backing, but didn't pre-drill holes in the back of the bookcase to receive the screws. The instructions say to “Use 20 Phillips screws roundhead to attach the back panel through guide holes to the back of the bookcase.” The screws are M4x15mm. We chose not to attach the backing, even though it might stiffen the bookcase. As any carpenter knows, driving screws into solid wood that is not pre-drilled risks splitting the wood. Also, the warped backing would exert force on the screws, possibly ripping them out of the wood. We purchased this bookcase to provide shelving in a walk-in closet. Since we are stuck with it, we consider it okay for that purpose. If we needed this bookcase In a place where we’d see it all the time, we would probably donate it to charity and buy something better. We own a much nicer, larger bookcase made by Ashley. Our local discount furniture mart has it priced at only $70 more (If you assemble at yourself) than we paid for this SimpliHome piece. We wish we had bought another Ashley! I hate to write such a negative review, but I hope it will serve to warn others not to make the same mistake. Thank you, all my fellow reviewers, for sharing your wisdom. You help us immensely.
