  • Nicely done
Finally, Silva came out with a good luminous protractor that works nicely with the other liminous markings, although the North needle luminous is thin. Compass has a good look and feel to it. I like not having the brand-name on the bottom of capsule like a competitors, which allows for more map orienting lines Romer scales work for latitude-longitude on some metric maps. Subtle, low key clinometer works fine, too. Global needle has a tilt bias that allows it to work NH & SH. Some may find it annoying. Although I seriously doubt i'll be doing any globetrotting. What's not to like? nada thing. ... show more

  • the global needle is tricky to use
I've owned this compass for several months and I really love this compass with one major drawback: the global needle is hard to use. If they made this model with a NH (northern hemisphere) needle, I would give it 5 stars. You get pretty much everything you see. I mostly valued having the map protractor features. Inclinometer and glowing parts are nice to haves. It would be nice to have a thin black line for reading the bearings (instead, it's marked with a thick green glow-in-the-dark indicator). But the killer for me is the global needle. Taking precision bearings in the field is important to me. At first, I thought I was just taking bad bearings (often off by 10 degrees). I spent time trying to understand what was happening... and it comes down to the "global" pivot mechanism. While holding the compass, a small twist of your wrist will cause the compass to point in a different direction... sweeping across about 40 degrees. If you hold it perfectly level, the needle will point off by about 8 degrees. With tapping and shaking and holding the compass non-level, you can get it in a state where the needle isn't so sensitive to twists of your wrist. And I think (but I'm not sure) that that's a true reading. So the bottom line is that I'm never really sure if the needle is actually pointing to magnetic north or not. I've replaced it with a Silva mirror compass that has a NH needle. While this compass works fine for non-precision stuff (i.e. most practical uses)... it's going to spend a lot of time collecting dust. Note: I use the compass in California... so you may get different results in some other region depending on how the magnetic field affects the needle. ... show more

  • Poor Quality
This is the second purchase of this same compass. The first one had the same problem as the replacement one. The needle frequently gets stuck and you have to thump it to get it to swing. It appears that the needle is not properly balanced on the pin. Would not recommend this compass as two in a row have the same issue. I will be returning it for a refund as defective. ... show more

  • Does not point north!
If I could give this compass a zero star rating I would. The needle will point every direction except point north. In addition, the needle hangs up on the clinometer frequently. This compass is made in China - no suprise.
