I got this as a gift for my partner. It clearly states that a safety strap is supposed to come with the compass, however there is none to be found here. It seems to be used and poorly repackaged (why is there a fake crystal in the tape? Unprofessional. ) I wouldn't mind buying a used product if I KNEW that it was used.     • Read the features carefully. No adjustable declination on this one.
This is a standard orienteering compass. One aspect that was disappointing is that while there is a declination scale, you can't dial in the declination and leave it like you can on some of the other models. For example some of the older rangers (I have one and all 3 of my kids do as well, with this being the most recent) have a little screw you turn to dial in the declination. This review covers the Ranger 'S' Silva Compass- While you can adjust for declination, it does not have a key for 'locking' it- which is not a big deal at all. There are other reviews that claim problems with declination adjustments, but since they don't reference a specific compass, it's hard to tell if it's a damaged product, or they simply don't really know how to use it. I bought 2 of these, one to replace my Silva from 20+ years before, and the other as a gift. It works perfectly. If you take the time to actually learn how to navigate using a map and a compass, it delivers everything you need.
