  • earphones for people who want to enjoy their music
Size: SE215 Style: Headphones Color: Special Edition White
just to clear the air .... firstly .... what the Shures ARE NOT: ultra-easy pop in, pop out earphones smart (tech spec talking points similar to the flood of what else is available) water resistant i have given some wireless and true wireless ear 'buds' a spin, just to get a feel for what i like and don't like about them. i have tried: Bose Soundsport Wireless, JBL Reflect Mini 2, Beats X, Elite 65t, Eytmotic ER-4P (wired, 3.5mm jack). of all of these earphones, each has it's own design and sound signature. if you are like the masses, shopping around and looking for BASS: go get yourself over-the-ear headphones and blast your hearing out of existence. the next runner up to headphones (for bass) would be the Bose. if you want a more balanced and clean sound that doesn't insult the music you want to listen to, keep reading. the Shure SE215 has a balanced sound stage, connected to a Bluetooth amplifier that's capable of more than just the basic SBC codec (the base audio codec supported by all Bluetooth receivers) and the AAC codec (the preferred coded used by iPhones). what that means is that you can, if your player is capable, take advantage of better sounding audio codecs that are supported by the BT2, enabling better sound quality. essentially, if you have lossless audio (FLAC, WAV, AIFF), and your player supports aptX, then you will have a better quality listening experience over SBC (this is what almost all wireless and true wireless use). even if you have an iPhone, you benefit from AAC, which sounds better than SBC. but ultimately - you are capped by the quality of the source audio. with ALL earphones that are designed to fit inside your ears, right up to your outer ear canal, the type of seal and fit you get is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing, it will affect how your music sounds. For instance, if you use foam tips you will contain more audio and get a more full range sound (for those that like BASS, you will hear more of that). if you want some transparency to your surroundings, you'd want to use silicone ear tips. i personally prefer foam ear tips for listening, but instead use trimmed down triple flange tips from my ER-4P's, because that provides some transparency to my surroundings, at the expense of losing some sound stage. ultimately, ear tips is a whole experiment in and of itself, with the ultimate solution being a custom set of ear molds (soundmolds, snugs, etc.), if you're that serious. i personally can customize eartips using Sugru and be happy with the fit. like i said above, i have tried both wireless and true wireless. of all those i mentioned above, the worst fitters were the Beats X. although they are pretty well integrated with iOS devices, they were the worst to manage wearing around the neck and getting a comfortable fit. those flat/wide cables used can be a source of frustration, at best. the Soundsport wireless were easy to use, however modifying the stay hear tips was necessary to get a secure fit, otherwise if you don't mind looking like Shrek, they are the best mainstream option. the Reflect Mini 2 had a decent fit, but the wire was too short for me and sound was not that great for a $100 pair. the Elite 65t was the most convenient to put on and held well in my ears, but the notion of having one pop out of my ear and fall into a toilet or a puddle didn't settle well for me - in addition to that the fact that the battery life was not great, that kept me from committing to the Elite 65t for the asking retail price. all of these earphones offer an app companion to do things like activate pass-through, update firmware, adjust EQ, in addition to other features. The Shures have no companion app, no firmware updates, no personalization settings such as connecting to 2 or 3 devices. what the Shures ARE: very nice sounding earphones that are versatile change the eartips to whatever you like to get the sound response and fit you want shape-able ear hooks that give a secure positioning and firm fit: they are not falling off your ears the best-in-town battery capacity (i am not kidding when i say i can run these constantly connected for 12 hrs before a recharge) the wires and bt receiver take some getting used to but if you're patient and find a place on your clothing to hook it that moves the cables away from your ears and neck, you won't mind. natural sound isolation (foam tips, or 3 flange tips like Eytmotic) - these can drown out airplane noise dramatically and use up ZERO battery power to do so. i am a sound quality enthusiast, not an audiophile. i really enjoy listening to my favorite music with clarity and a good balance to the frequencies. at the end of the day, there are other brands - both much better and much worse, more expensive and less expensive, depending on what you want from them. as far as i was concerned, for me the ability to swap out the ear tips (foam for a long flight, silicone for everywhere else), and get this very good battery life were as important as sound quality to me. these are not the best sounding out there (compare to higher-end models, brands), but compared to the mainstream at this price point, it ticks off the points I care about and can live without the features it lacks. lastly, having MMCX connectors means I can always shop around and choose a different BT cable in the future. ... show more

  • Dont waste your money, look elswhere. I suggest the B&W Pi3
Size: SE215 Style: Headphones Color: Special Edition Translucent Blue
I am an audio and video engineer by trade in NYC. I have used Shure SE series IEMs for years and like thier product. I was planning on swapping the MMCX BT2 cable between my SE-425 and these 215's . HOWEVER!!! The bluetooth cable is absolutly not up to any acceptable standard. The connectivity is unacceptable. it would drop out within just a few feet and sometimes even with the phone in my pocket. I couldnt even leave the phone on the bedside table and walk around my bedroom on a call without dropouts. The audio quality was just OK comparred to my wired cable but definitly not as good as the wired connection obviously. I returned these and tried the Bowers & Wilkins Pi3 earbuds and I have to say that are WAYYYYY better. Not only is the sound quality comparable with the much more expensive SE425 earbuds even when hardwired but the bluetooth connection and materials quality put the Shure product to shame. The B&W cost $199 comapred to $149 for these and it seemed like it was a much bigger leap in quality than the $50 difference would suggest. ... show more

  • GREAT fit, POOR audio quality
Size: SE215 Style: Headphones Color: Black
I purchased the Shure SE215's to use as my motorcycle Bluetooth communication headset. The fit is amazing. The headphones lay "inside" of the external ear canal, which means the headphones are flush with your outer ear (nothing sticking out to catch on your motorcycle helmet). I tried two helmets: (1) a low-profile helmet (the Micro Dot Blister) similar to a Crazy Al's beanie style or a Daytona Skull Cap. Outstanding fit, no issues what-so-ever and (2) the real test, a full-face helmet...again, the helmet slipped on without pulling or tugging the earphones out. I was amazed that I didn't have to adjust the earphones after placing the helmet on - helmet slipped right over the low-profile design and stood in place. WHY DID I RETURN THESE AWESOME EARPHONES??? Unlike all the "review" videos I saw on YT, the sound quality was very POOR for a top-of-the-line audio brand like Shure. I'm not sure (...see what I did there...)if the "reviewers" were trying to sell this product on their website(s) or if they received the earphones for free in exchange for a positive review - couldn't tell you. But the audio quality on these were very low (surprisingly low). I tested them in my home office. It was a quiet setting. The volume was set to 50% and the audio sounded distant and muffled. I put the volume up to 75% at it sounded like it was 50% volume of a normal earphone or earbud. I had the foam tips in which are supposed to provide some noise cancellation and in theory help the sound to stay in your ear, thus eliminating the need to crank up the volume. I didn't find that was the case with these earphones. I had to crank the volume up to nearly 100% to get crisp audio, which defeats the purpose of my buying earphones like these (noise-cancelling w/ foam tips for hearing protection). To use these earphones I would be risking ear damage using these at almost max volume. I have good hearing. I'm in my early 40's. I never damaged my hearing in the past. I use the standard Apple (wired) earbuds and they work fine, the volume and sound quality is great and I never get close to maxing out the volume. I'm sorry to report that the standard wired Apple earbuds are much better audio quality than the Shure SE215's. I really don't see any recommendation here b/c if you ride a motorcycle you'll have so much wind and road noise you would need to set these at 100% volume and you don't want to do that. If you're doing something outdoors i.e. running, exercising, CrossFit, biking, or working out in the gym, I don't see these working well in those environments either. You would have to crank up the volume too high and would not make this purchase worth it. Lastly, I tested making a phone call with the SE215's and it scored poorly there as well. The volume rocker and microphone are on the right earpiece wire, right around your jawline. I have a beard. Standing still and talking (the mechanics of my mouth and jaw moving) made irritating scratching noise for the person on the ohter line. They said they could hear me talking but the scratching sound was almost equal volume as my voice tone. Even if you were clean-shaven the volume rocker and mic would rub up against your skin and you would have a similar issue. Overall, the design of the earpiece is amazing, they nailed it. The comfort in your ear is outstanding - you could wear these for hours and it wouldn't fatigue your ears. But the audio and call quality (the two main reasons for purchasing earphones like these) score very low and make these earphones unusable b/c they lack those two basic funcations. I sent my back and I would not recommend these. ... show more
