    • Real wood bookcase! But tolerances are tight, and you will want to take extra steps

Overall, I didn't have much difficulty putting it together, although some of the steps would have been easier with two people. Some things to note: The back gets put on with nails, but the back is fragile and splits easily. You should pre-drill your nail holes, using a 1/16 bit. Also, the tolerances there are tight -- you don't have much space to drive the nail into wood, and the spots are not pre-marked, so you will want to dry-fit the pieces and pay attention to where the nails need to go. The rest of the pieces go together with bits of dowel and screws. In my experience, some of the dowel holes were quite snug (good!), some were looser. I used wood glue to improve the odds they'd stay in. The screws were somewhat awkward to screw in because of the angle, so I ended up driving them in by hand rather than using a drill. If the manufacturer put a little more work into this -- pre-drilling the nail holes, maybe providing a little more structural reinforcement -- it would be a lot better bookcase. But it's OK and will get the job done. As another review said, it really *does* look better in person than in the pictures. One other thing: The box it comes in is very hard to open (lots and lots of adhesive). You aren't going to be about to open this, look at it, then send it back easily. I love this bookcase! Solid wood with a plywood back, took about an hour to assemble but I took it slow and glued everything as I went. It was extremely well packaged and arrived in perfect shape, and the finish is, to my eye, flawless!?

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars overall is that there were supposed to be 16 shelf pegs and there were only 12 in the package. We had to go to several local hardware/construction stores to find pegs that would fit. Other than that, the wood is beautiful, the packing was perfect, not a scratch. My husband said the directions were very easy to follow. Couldn't be happier with this bookcase!!!! I would DEFINITELY buy again! ... show more

As a consumer assembled low cost piece of furniture this unit is one of the better. It is easy to assemble, looks decent, and all parts were supplied ( however not one extra screw, nail, or dowel ). You will see gaps in the joinery if you look closely caused by differing lengths of some pieces (wood shrinkage, or poor measurement ?) but most people will not notice. It is held together with screws and dowels. The back is attached with small nails. The screws go in easy and it is also easy to crush the wood if you bear down too hard on the screws. I glued my dowels for extra hold. This is not called for in the instructions, but I will never disassemble this piece so why not. Just make sure you have everything at hand before you start. If you have the cash, go to a furniture store for tight fits and quality construction, otherwise this is a decent unit for DIY. ... show more
