  • Hands Down Best Synth You Can Buy
The price is unreal for a polyphonic analog synth with more versatility than most hybrids/digital polysynths and a better sound than all of them Extremely rich and versatile timbral character, prophet 5 rev 4 filter, stereo overdrive, p6 morphing vcos with sine wav to pulse, actual usable musical linear and exponential fm on the front panel and in the insanely deep mod matrix which allows for recursive and stacked modulation for deeper animation (osc 2 to osc 1 freq/shape/filter fm in multiple slots continues to multiply the strength of the modulation), best fx of any sequential synth, and overall sound design capability second only to the prophet 12 with a much much better sound. For a synth that sounds this good, that kind of flexibility is unheard of. This synth can do physical modeling, beautiful and atonal experimental fm, hard synced morphing waveshapes with fm on top of it, beautiful plucky sines that blossom into thick syrupy waves of saw & pulse brass. You can make this thing sound like an alien orchestra or a melting guitar made of wooden strings. It is unbelievable. The best part is that any crazy timbre you make will also be incredibly strong and powerful with the ultra rich vcos behind them and most gorgeous creamy filter I’ve heard outside of an oberheim sem. It’s not like making a cool alien sound on a hydrasynth that will sound interesting, but with the quality of a vst plugin. This is more like sculpting audio like clay from an organic electronic source material and then bending it to your will. There is truly nothing like it The envelope response is amazing, especially with the recent firmware now allowing loop function, the knobs feel great, the layout is perfect, the menu and mod matrix are the most intuitive and comfortable to program that I’ve ever used, and I’ve owned a LOT of synths; hybrid analog/digital poly, analog poly, analog mono, digital poly and mono, eurorack modular, Elektron, vintage moogs. Nothing combines this malleability with pure mind obliterating timbral quality. This synth has no business being this price. Put it beside any other synth and you’ll hear the difference immediately from the init patch. But, if you’re a sound designer who gets bored with limitations and also is tired of the lack of warm character from the ones that are made for sound designers, this is literally the best of both worlds. You can get a p12, but it’s not going to sound nearly as musical. I love a lot of synths, but nothing will ever touch the Take-5. I have never witnessed something go under the radar as much as this synth has. Criminally underrated and it will 100% be a classic in the future once people realize what they’ve been ignoring. Trust me, sell all of your other synths. This is all you need ... show more

  • This is a toy
After owning an OB-6 the Take 5 is a toy. It is extremely dumbed down and the sound quality is not even close to the likes of a Prophet or OB. I realize that it’s not a copy of those but you just expect that wow factor when you turn on a Sequential (Dave Smith Instruments) synth. Every single onboard effects sound miserably uninspired and low detail. The mod routing is capable but still very uninspiring. The envelopes and filter just don’t sound good. Thin and boxy/digital sounds. Unlike the rich and warm sounds from the flagships. The 5 voices are not enough for an actual pianist/synth player. If you’re a one finger Vangelis you may be ok. The build quality is also not very confidence inspiring. The knobs feel cheap and the whole interface just seems like it’s a toy. Which it can be for some people and that is fine. If you’re dreaming of rich analog creativity, stay asleep. ... show more

  • Do not overlook this incredible diamond in the rough
Sorry, this isn't a detailed review of technical capabilities -- plenty of other places to go to get that info -- but it is a review of my experience. There are instruments you use and then there are instruments you play. For me, the Take 5 is an instrument to play. I demoed one of these before buying it, expecting to be impressed but not cross that line into making a purchase. Within minutes of checking out the easy to select built-in patches, I was exploring my own sounds with the ample quality knobs and solid -- but not knock your socks off -- keybed, relieved to find I didn't need to menu dive to come up with wildly different sounds from the front panel. And then it happened, the smile -- the one that appears when you're vibing and getting into the zone. I knew this was a match, me and the Take 5. So I got one and I'm really loving playing it. One other thing, there was an update to the Take 5 earlier this year (2023) that doubled the user patch storage so make sure you update the firmware to enjoy it. ... show more

  • Waiting my whole life for this affordable powerhouse
It’s about time a company (Sequential Circuits) created a synth that’s affordable for the average joe and gave him the biggest bang for his bucks. I never thought I’d ever be able to afford a powerhouse synth like this beast. Synths like these are usually over $2000! $800 is as high as I go but this thing is worth the extra moolah! All the sounds including the extra 128 firmware update presets are everything you desire with rich, dreamy, twinkling and growling soundscapes. I finally have my big boy synth I’ve always wanted since I began my synth journey back in 2006. Buy this one, Average Joes, it’s a dream box come true! ... show more

  • Best Poly Analog considering price/features
Not sure why someone would give this 1 star. I would say this has to be among the best poly (5 voice analog) synthesizers available today when you consider the price point. It would cost several hundred more to get something substantially better. I play mine everyday, the keyboard feels great! 2 potential negatives: No poly aftertouch (but that makes sense at this price point) and the preset/memory bank is woefully small, but it seems easy enough to manage your presets using an external app, I just wish they had allotted more memory for the presets. ... show more
