  • Senran At its Best
Style: Peach Beach Splash
This addition to the Senran Kagura games is amazing. It introduces a completely new type of gameplay completely different to the series: third-person shooting. All of the shinobi girls battle one another and minion-style enemies using an arsenal of soaking-wet inducing, colorful and vibrant water-splashing weapons. PEACH BEACH SPLASH has a very entertaining value to it in its shooter gameplay, whether offline or online in a ranked match or survival. Throughout the game, as you do missions or play online, you can obtain cards at random. These cards are used for your pet slots (additional entities that grant you an extra weapon, effect, or affinity), skills slots (pretty much like the pet's effects but extended and more of an instant effect), and weapon. Duplicates of these cards can stack to be used as experience to upgrading existing cards of Shinobi Girls (raising the time/power of effects or health of the shinobi). There's a huge variety of cards to collect in the game, and the collection process is a nifty little feature that also keeps me hooked. The way you mix and match your cards and level them up will help you gain an advantage on the offline and online battlefields, so keep grinding! Actual battle is great. Who doesn't enjoy running around as scantily-clad anime girls soaking each other with water? The game, believe it or not, actually incorporates a strategical element into it. Every weapon has two types of firing modes (which changes per weapon), one mode usually consuming more "water" (ammo for everything you do) then the other, etc. These different modes can help players adapt to specific situations in which they cause for it, but it's always a take away as you also need water to quickly jump/fly around the map or dash to downed teammates or cover. Reloading times and speeds vary per weapon (typically, heavier damage = slower reload), which brings us back to how specific card usage can help! If the battle system had any problems, I would say that (typical of a senran game) there is possibility to be overpowered/abused. Leveling up your shinobi/gun/card more and more will give you major advantages over those who haven't been able to level up much, which can be a problem in the online free for all/search match types. I also feel that some of the weapons on the game are pretty much useless when compared to others (e.g Double pistols, spray gun) but mostly in single-player modes. Players can also instantly switch between auto aim or manual on any weapons in the heat of battle, but manual aim is pretty much useful only for trying to get your own team wet and give them the unlimited water boost. Heading towards story and content, well while it was enjoyable and took me a few days to overcome, it's much shorter when compared to other senran games. It felt like the story didn't have much thought into it at all, but as a sorta-cannon not completely-cannon game (I'm assuming it sort of is) game, I guess that doesn't matter too much. All in all, there's a total of 51 episodes (or "missions") in the story mode, several "paradise episodes" (each span 5 missions of their own), and the 4 tournament cups with 5 battles each. All of these can be played on 1, 2, and 3 star difficulties, meaning there is replay value but if you want enjoyment of story with it, you might not get that. Content is still great. With all of the HD, toned and detailed anime graphics, we see the return of all the old breakable outfits and bikinis from past senran games, with the introduction of some new outfits and re-imagined outfits that have "transparency." In my opinion, these are the best outfits for the obvious reasons, but I can't seem to understand why the developers decided to make about 20 or less of these outfits. I personally believe the game should have put a focus on bikinis and see-thru outfits, even if it meant leaving out the shinobi costumes that rip. Overall, this is a beautifully designed, cheerful, bubbly game that works well in the Senran series. We get all of our favorite girls fighting in a more risque situation, with great "squirmy" finishers and outfits, tons of missions to play offline, and a fun multiplayer system that works better than past titles. I'd set it at about a 4.8 stars, but rounded up. It definitely hits high of the moist meter! If you like shooters, developed anime girls, or both, than pick up this game. ... show more

It would be easy to simply write this game off as all style and no substance but as with previous installments in this series it rides that fine line between the two and a really fun game is the result. The card system the game uses for weapons and summons is interesting as the more of multiples of the same card you get you can use those to power up cards for weapons you may find yourself using a lot like for instance I had gotten use to laying down the law with a gattling gun so that was the first card I started to power up and etc. The story mode is surprisingly good for the single player experience as is the tournament mode for those who either don't care for multiplayer or need a break from it, so far during my time I've noticed not a lot of people are playing this online so I've had to wait a bit before finding players if I haven't given up and moved on. The few times I've played against others it has been a ok experience as the range of players go from "first time to the series" to usual multiplayer shenanigans. The extras for this collector's edition are good for the price you pay for as you get a blu ray that has the intro to all of the previously released games in the series, a soundtrack and a mini art book where mileage may vary on images in that book that should have been the cover to the US games or that "I Seriously Can't Have That As Box Art". Fun game to have no matter which edition you purchase ... show more

  • More rain clouds then rainbows.
Style: Peach Beach Splash
Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash is venture from the normal hack n slash of the regular games. It joins "SENRAN KAGURA Bon Appétit!" as being different however this game is not a rhythm game. SK tries something new with a 3rd person shooter. Honestly, I do like the game and I am a massive Senran Kagura fan! I will try and break down my thoughts on this game to help you decided if you want to buy this or not. I will not that before I purchased this for the West, I do have a copy of the Japanese version so I have probably played this game as much as anyone else if not more. I will go with Pros first and comment that I love the pace of the game. It is fast going through both story and online mode. There is a story mode for all four of the schools along with the overseers which reappear from EV. Even though the girls heart mode is absent from this game, it is replaced with the "paradise episodes" which is actually a good place to grind for cards to level up girls, guns and cards to max. That said, leveling up is easy and you don't have to play online to do so. All leveling up can be done through story mode, survival, cups or paradise episodes. Basically you can get all the trophies without having to go online and in my opinion it is a very easy platinum. Yes there is fan service as always and I still feel that SK blends in good humor with their own drama. I don't want to give any spoilers but this game seems to be a continuing s/u for a additional game as it seems to me from EV. Currently you will hear something at the end of the story about Senran Kagura 7. From the short scenes you see in my opinion I think SK maybe going back more to their roots as in Burst and Deep Crimson 2. Additionally there are several guns to use and cards are used in the game for offensive means, protection, healing and positive/negative buffs-nerfs. In the end, all the girls are almost identically the same. The only major difference is if you try a physical attack in which some characters movement is faster or covers an attack area differently. That is pretty much the only difference. With s/u of pet cards and offensive/defensive cards, you can have various builds you want. Honestly certain cards go better with certain guns. The dressing room returns and as always you can change your characters appearance with decent amount of detail. Everything also you earn moves over into online as well. With online you now have the option for local and global matches. At this time JP is not added to the global but Europe is. You have options of 3v3, 5v5 on ranked matches, free match (can set up what every game mode you want) and co-op survival. You will see the match type will be knock out (team battle), squirmy finishers, queen of the hills and capture the bra. Note that ranked matches will randomly select match type whereas in free matches you can choose. Now this all leads me to the negative which is why I rate this game 3 stars out of 5. The servers are not very good. I see too many players disconnecting and I have even had some disconnections despite me having good internet. Most players you see will have 90% of the time have 1 bar or none on connectivity and the other players will see you the same as well. 10% of the time you may see a player with 2 bars. If you play online local maybe your best option as disconnections are less common then on global. If you get disconnected you won't suffer a loss on rank but you will lose any winning streak you had which gives you extra points earned. Depending on your point of view match making may not seem fair. Really, a person could be maxed out as a beginner and take down higher level players. Still it does discourage some players to have a team of 4th and maybe 5th tiers looking across at masters and 1st tier players. Some players see this and decided not to stay and that can cause wait time for a game to start. Additionally if they bail before the match begins, their team gets a cpu and puts them at a big disadvantage. I will add that people should have an option to choose to commit to a game if they want to or not. It's not fair as some players pop in and have no choice to play the game because it counts down to start automatically. Continuing with my online disappointment is that you can't send direct game invites to friends or s/u up a private match. Your only option is with Survival in which you can make a password and I think you can do that as well with free match. So it could be random luck if you want to team up with friends because you maybe just battling each other more then teaming. Honestly that would be your preference. It just always seems I have one friend miss out when we try to team. Disconnections happen so much more now the global! I occasionally get disconnected but other players have and it is unfair to teams. Yes I have benefited from it but I also have been ripped off by it too. Split decisions do not happen and can be unfair. There is always a winner regardless if there is a tie. I've literally tied up a capture the bra game at 3 to 3 and my team won at that last second when we had been trailing 90% of the game. I've had people say its because of the knock outs but I do not agree. I have won splash queen when I had a horrible game knocking out one person and getting 2 squirmy finishers when someone else deserved it more. On the other hand I played great and did not get a MVP even though I never got knocked out and I KO 4 or more. Some players work their butt off trying to get the flag to score or grab pillars on queen of the hills for wins and never reach the MVP stage even though they were the big reason for the team winning. Lastly, the most frustrating part is the player base which is bare bones. It is near impossible to get 5v5 anymore and wait times take forever on 3v3. Only a select few play the game almost non stop so you don't get a variety of players. The online was outstanding the first week but it is over now. I've tried getting groups together but then most want to play global and then they d/c so that ends those attempts quickly. The story mode is not enough to carry this game for replay value and it cannot afford to suffer in multiplayer. I want to have hope but I'm getting close to shelving this game. Honestly if it had a player base, I think you would enjoy this game but currently I am having a hard time just thinking of recommending this game to anyone if they like multiplayer. I will note micro transactions are back but with gaming now, that is the norm so it's up to you if you want other characters or items. I will tell you buying other guns is a waste of time as their is no difference with them other then looks. If you get anything thing, pick the dlc cards as they are stronger and have faster load times. In the end, I suggest rent first. Your only options is buying this edition of the game or getting it off the PSN network. The additions with this game are nice but as always they are nothing compared to the Japanese versions. Again I suggest, rent first. ... show more
