Description

Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based – and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition. Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology – and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-read for parents – and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.Scattered Minds:- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy – and why- Shows how ‘distractibility’ is the psychological product of life experience- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults Read more

  • Attractive cover.
I've only read 10 pages in two weeks. I can't seem to focus. Originally I bought this to help my kids but I think I may benefit as well if I can ever sit down long enough to concentrate.

  • The best book on AD(H)D I have read
Beautifully written, ahead of its time, and aligned with the latest research on trauma, and attachment. It helps provide a lens to destigmatize this misunderstood condition, and a way to begin to release shame to begin to heal. As a licensed clinical social worker, this book rings true throughout from my professional experience treating clients with AD(H)D, as well as my own experience with the diagnosis. This book is not about blaming parenting, it is about understanding how secure attachment, interpersonal trauma, and stress impact people's ability to focus, find intrinsic motivation, and connect to others. This is a must read for anyone who is curious about understanding the human condition, but it is especially helpful if you have been diagnosed with AD(H)D, or know someone who struggles with the ability to focus, stay motivated, and/or connect to others. If you take the leap, it is vital you keep an open mind, and stay present with curious compassion. I hope others find love and healing through this book. ... show more

  • Incredible!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It was recommended to me by my therapist and I am so glad I took her advice. It is incredibly eye-opening, easy to read and powerful. It has reshaped my understanding of ADHD entirely and I am so grateful. I even gifted a copy to my friend who also has ADHD. ... show more

  • Incredible, unique perspective
Any book Gabor Mate has written or co-written is absolutely worth reading. I have ADHD and am beginning to work on a new approach both intellectually and medically. This is a must read.

  • IT IS TRUE. ADD or AD(H)D is caused by Trauma: Here's why
ADD or AD(H)D is caused by Trauma. What both Maté and Bessel Van der Kolk ( author of The Body Keeps the Score) have found is 100% true. it doesn't matter that conventional psychology hasn't yet found a 'cause'. The DSM defines mental illnesses by identifying common behaviors that are found grouped together and calling them a disorder. This is like Columbus landing in the Caribbean, seeing a group of people who seemed to him to be "Indians" and so concluding that the land he had reached, was in fact, the West Indies, and so the people he was looking at were in fact, Indians. Without a concept of the bigger picture, logical assumptions only become circular. Without a clear answer, the circle functions as the answer. The DSM does not mention definition, a cause or a cure. If you're ever left with asking yourself, "Yes, but what is it really? Where does it come from, what does it do to my brain and how can i reverse it? This book will give you all of your answers. Trauma distorts the brain in many, different ways. it is the cause of many mental "disorders.' instead of this modern pathology, that doles out pharma drugs but no answer, Maté can answer exactly HOW you got ADD, exactly HOW it has changed your brain, and exactly HOW you can work on your behaviors to slowly reverse the changes in your brain. ADD, luckily, it is easier to recognize, isolate from your psyche, and work to reverse old patterns. After unraveling your individual history and clearing away the fog, you can see your ADD self vs. your healthy self. You can then recognize when you find yourself tuning out, and tune back in. When you find yourself forgetting about time, float back to the present. Reading this book will make all the difference. ... show more

  • A very important read
My therapist suggested I read this. It’s been eye opening and has helped me connect some very important dots in my life and my upbringing and the person I am today. Gabor Maté’s writing style is eloquent and flows smoothly and is easy for most people to understand without a degree in psych. Most importantly, it’s helped me figure out next steps to talking to a psychiatrist to get proper treatment. Even if you yourself don’t have ADD, I think this is still an important read if you have someone close to you who does such as a child, spouse, or family member. It will help you understand them better. And then let them borrow it because it will help them understand themselves better. It’s definitely a valuable tool. ... show more
