Description

Ishbel Rose Holmes was adrift and alone when she set out to bicycle across the world. She was pedaling across Turkey when a street dog, Lucy, crossed her path and changed her life forever. Ishbel did not want anything or anyone to slow her down, but when she witnessed Lucy attacked by other dogs, Ishbel rescued her - forming a deep bond between the pair. Ishbel recognized her own vulnerability in her new canine friend and launched a heartfelt mission to find Lucy a home and give her a happy life. Their adventures took them to the Syrian border and into the hearts of everyone who met them. People around the world who followed the story on Ishbel's blog, World Bike Girl, watched as Lucy's unconditional love broke down the wall around Ishbel's heart. When Lucy died unexpectedly in her arms, Ishbel realized that Lucy had found a home after all - with her, and that Ishbel had been Lucy's happy ever after. Read more

What an uplifting story. It proves just how much pets mean to us and how much we mean to them. It will bless you.

  • A dogs love knows no bounds.
Format: Paperback
Bought this book because I'm a dog lover and cyclist. Both are represented well in this book. This is a love story and a good one. Being a man this could be a hard read in places. The abuse Ishbel had to put up with from men is disheartening. I was afraid it would turn into another man bashing book, but to her credit she did not become bitter and recognized the goodness in people which she experienced in equal amounts throughout Turkey. This book demonstrates how small acts of kindness can change a persons negative outlook on life. Lucy's love and transformation shows how a dogs life that on the surface seems meaningless can mean so much if given a chance. Mind your words, kind ones can change the world. Unfortunately so can harsh ones. Don't read this next part if you do not know how this story ends. It was sad to read how dogs are treated in Turkey and the level of vet. care must be low. The first time she mentioned Lucy's symptoms I thought heartworm. A simple $20 blood test in the U.S. that is almost routine with those symptoms would have diagnosed her issue though it might still have been to late to save her. ... show more

  • Touching story
Format: Paperback
As a cyclist and animal lover, I couldn't resist ordering this slim but engaging book, and I wasn't disappointed. Ishbel Holmes, who was raised in Scotland, is a former bicycle racer for the Iranian national team (her father was Persian) who decided to cycle around the world. She had already completed multiple countries in Europe when she embarked on a tour of Turkey, and shortly into the journey, a street dog with a limp began following her. The dog was persistent, and Holmes eventually rigged a box to carry her on her handlebars. What she wasn't prepared for was how deeply attached she became to the dog, the Lucy of the title. Street dogs are reviled in much of Turkey, but Holmes became her fierce defender, and the feeling was quickly reciprocated. Lucy was a godsend on multiple occasions when Holmes was fending off unwanted sexual advances, for instance. And over time, Lucy unlocked a heart that Holmes had kept sequestered ever since her mother kicked her out and into foster care at the age of 16. (It was probably inevitable that Holmes would evoke the "Who rescued whom?" meme that one so often sees on bumper stickers.) Since Holmes was committed to her bike ride around the world, keeping Lucy wasn't a viable option, but she was determined to find her a loving home. In the process she navigated the dodgy world of animal rescue in Turkey and emerged with a new passion--to save as many street dogs around the world as she could. The book, while not long, goes into her efforts to find Lucy a forever home after she introduces her on social media. It also talks about Holmes's fractured childhood and adolescence and the lasting harm it did. It manages to illuminate the world of bicycle touring without becoming geeky, and to describe the places she cycled without becoming boring. And it proves an especially touching tale that is sure to appeal to animal lovers around the world. ... show more

  • Who saved who?
Format: Kindle
So much more than a dog story. Tells so much about personal struggles, and the human condition. Biking, a dogs unconditional love, for me, doesn’t get much better than that, but this story was so much more. A definite 5 star!

  • wonderful and very moving
Format: Kindle
Saving Lucy was a very loving and moving story about a dog that only wanted love and found it in the most unlikely place. I was so moved and I didn't want to put the book down. An unexpected ending but was worth reading.
