Description

An Instant New York Times Bestseller and a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice. Natalie Portman’s Book Club Pick for March. “Amanda’s story―innovatively told by versions of herself at different ages―underscores the lasting power of speaking your truth, building a movement, and never losing sight of your dreams.” ―Melinda French Gates “In Saving Five, Amanda Nguyen shows us how to reclaim the full spectrum of our lives, replete with pain, fury, creativity, and recovered dreams.” ―Chanel Miller, author of Know My Name In 2013, the trajectory of Amanda Nguyen’s life was changed forever when she was raped at Harvard University. Determined not to let her assault derail her goal of joining NASA after graduation, Nguyen opted for her rape kit to be filed under “Jane Doe.” But she was shocked to learn her choice to stay anonymous gave her only six months to press charges before the state destroyed her kit, rendering any future legal action impossible. Nguyen knew then that she had two options: surrender to a law that effectively denied her justice, or fight for a change―not only for herself but for survivors everywhere. A heart-wrenching memoir of survival and hope, Saving Five boldly braids the story of Nguyen’s activism―which resulted in Congress’s unanimous passage of the Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act in 2016―with a second, beautifully imagined adventure, of Nguyen’s younger selves as they, at the ages of five, fifteen, twenty-two, and thirty, navigate the emotional stages of her path toward healing, not only from her rape but from the violent turmoil of her childhood. The result is a groundbreaking work that seamlessly blends memoir with a moving recounting of her journey toward acceptance and hope, forging a path ahead that is as inspiring as it is instructive. From one of the most influential activists (and now astronauts) of our time, Saving Five is at once a tribute to resilience, a celebration of healing through action, and a resounding cry to change the world. I don't say this lightly-Saving Five moved me to tears. As someone who has survived both domestic abuse and sexual assault, I found Amanda's story not only powerful, but deeply validating. Her strength is undeniable, and the work she's done putting her own life on pause to advocate for others like us-is nothing short of extraordinary. Amanda's journey through the five stages of grief is raw, real, and incredibly human. Grief is not linear, and many never reach that final stage of acceptance. But in sharing her process, she's created something that can act as a lifeline for others navigating similar pain. And then... learning that she's heading to space in April 2025? | cried all over again-this time with joy. Whatever my thoughts may be about the rest of the crew, Amanda's inclusion feels like a victory for every survivor who's ever been told their dreams were out of reach. I cannot recommend Saving Five enough, especially now. In the current social climate of the U.S., when stories like Amanda's are needed more than ever, I believe that this is worth the read. “Grief is worth going through. Each stage is painful but has a lesson to teach us. Denial provides us hope. Anger gives us fuel. Bargaining teaches us value. Sadness grants us our humanity. And Acceptance... acceptance of grief reveals to us that we are made of love. At the end of all this, at the end of the tunnel, is healing.” ... show more

  • Heartbreaking yet full of hope
Format: Hardcover
A concern that I have is the use of the words "my rape." Yes, this terrible trauma happened to her. My concern is in making the violent act of rape to be seen as being "my rape", mine, and in keeping it close and personal. Yes, it is personal. The violent violation of one's body is personal. It is the most personal of all acts of violence. However, when a rape victim begins to heal, I suggest referring to it as "the rape." It feels unhealthy to continue to refer to it as mine or my rape or my rapist. In healing, and in time, a rape victim and her healing life can put distance between herself and that of the rapist and the rape. The traumatic experience will always be a part of a rape victim's life. With healing, why keep the trauma so personally in the present by referring to it as "my rape?" This, of course, is simply my own view. Thank you for this book. It is an important book, and a work of significance. I feel proud of Amanda Nguyen. Her parents should be bursting with pride and appreciation for all that she has accomplished. Her work has given hope and promise to the women and girls who have suffered the trauma of rape. ... show more

  • I didn't want to leave a starred review for this one but it's required.
Format: Audiobook
I listened to the audiobook for this one on Libby instead of reading the book like I normally would. As always, my honest thoughts and opinions are directly below. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This book is a memoir written by Amanda Nguyen and explains her experience with the legal system after she was raped by another student at the university they were both attending. It also discusses the fallout she experienced and her struggles with balancing career and wanting justice. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I didn't want to include a star rating on this book because it's a memoir based on real-life events that actually happened. I didn't feel comfortable leaving a rating for that reason. I know I used to but I've changed my thoughts on that. I feel so bad for Amanda throughout this book and almost cried at a few points because I've been in her shoes. I know how frightening the prospect of legally going after an SA perpetrator is, especially when it comes to what it does to our future. I struggled, though, with the fact that Amanda was hanging on to her rape kit like she was going to prosecute but was saying that she didn't want to because of her career and her future. It bothered me because she just wasn't making a decision. I felt like she kept putting it off and it rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, I completely understand her viewpoint and I have a feeling my thoughts are going to be a massive hot take, but it's still how I feel at this point. I wish she made up her mind at an earlier point but I'm also glad she decided to stand up for other abuse survivors. I wanted so much for her to prosecute the person who raped her but I know what that would have done for her future and his. It makes me so angry when I think about what victims go through on a daily basis, especially when Amanda gave statistics on how much the victim pays in the end just for medical care alone after their incident. It makes me physically sick. I would recommend this book but only if you're in a good frame of mind. It can get really dark sometimes and I'm not sure I was in the right frame of mind to consume this book at the time that I listened to it. I might come back to it in the future but we'll see. ... show more

Such an incredible book and story. The writing structure is so unique and brilliant. It has all of the adventure and prose of fiction, with the impact and inspiration of a nonfiction memoir. I hope everyone reads this book and finds the same hope that it brought me

  • Heart-wrenching, gut-punching, and soul-healing
Format: Hardcover
2nd memoir I read; the first was Crying in H-Mart by Michelle Zauner. I loved Amanda's fire. I related to so much of what she touched on: the desire to live, survive, fight, and overcome any adversity, the grieving process, her emotional self-awareness. The adventurous, fantastical descriptions of herself at different ages journeying through memories and the stages of grief together were touching and inspiring. ... show more

  • Saving five is a must read
Format: Hardcover
There aren’t enough stars in the world for this book. I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda not once, but twice through Alpha Phi. She briefly told us parts of her story but now hearing her full account makes me admire her that much more. I will forever be thankful for this book, her activism, and the voice she gave to survivors. Reading this during SAAM is not lost on me. I will forever be saving five. ... show more
