I like this shelf, it is good quality. I took one star off because the back pieces are extremely thin and difficult to attach. I think for the price I paid for this shelf it should have a sturdier backing. Aside from that, I was able to put it together without much difficulty. I had a very difficult time with putting the back on without help, but after a few tries, I was able to do it on my own. I would buy this product again. ... show more

I am incredibly pleased with this bookcase. The package was quite a bit heavier than I was expecting, and as we unpacked and assembled the bookcase, it turns out that heaviness equated to high quality and sturdiness. It was easy enough to assemble that a teenager did most of the work unassisted, except in cases where their height was an impediment. I like the color of the piece, I like the curved detail at the top, and overall am very happy with the piece. It is completely loaded with books now, and I noticed no sagging to the shelves - although of course this could vary depending on the thickness/heaviness of your books or other objects. I would absolutely recommend this piece - gives a very sophisticated, "solid wood" look to your room. ... show more

I am incredibly impressed with this bookshelf. Previously I have only ever built cheap Box store book shelves that fall apart after a year or two. This bookshelf is impressively solid and was a dream to put together. The instructions were very well written and easy to follow, and have a number of humorous little side notes that make the building process entertaining. The end product looks absolutely wonderful! I adore the dark cherry look. I originally received one and now I feel I need to get it a partner LOL! The shelves are spaced far enough apart that you can fit just about any book, including large text books. I get that the price of this book shelf is a bit steep, but considering how often you have to replace the cheap box store units you will easily have a better value out of buying a couple of these incredibly well made ones that will last. ... show more

This was a chore to assemble - it does have quite a few pieces. If you have a drill, it will make your life easier and help you assemble this much faster than having to use a screwdriver. The instructions are pretty clear. There are also a few videos in the listing about assembling it and putting the back on. I assembled this on a thin carpet to make sure the pieces didn't get damaged. If you don't have a rug, consider laying down a sheet or something to prevent scratching. The bookshelf feels pretty sturdy once it is put together, aside from the backing, which is thin pressboard type material. That seems to be pretty standard in assemble-yourself furniture. I went into this thinking the worst, but it really isn't as bad as I expected. The instructions are very helpful, and if you read every part rather than just looking at the picture, they make it almost impossible to put the wrong pieces in the wrong places. I set this up in 2 hours and only had help to stand the shelf up and flip it over when needed. The main issues is probably not knowing what to expect as far as tools needed and being able to easily tell the difference between a few of the screws that are thrown all in one bag. The large wooden pieces are all labeled, some with big stickers and others where it's been printed/stamped on the rough ends. Some pieces you just have to look a little harder for the label. Once you pull all the parts out, get a plate or tray to dump your hardware onto and separate them into their matching groups. There are some screws that look similar, but I learned a pan head screw means the screw that has a bulb like rounded read. When you hold them together, one screw has a flat head and the other is a pan head (because it isn't flat). Then you have the very short screws with a large head. The one with a flat, non sharp bottom will be used much later in assembly, and if you pay close attention to the pictures of each piece of hardware, it's no trouble at all to find the right parts. I do agree that I prefer the parts separated with labels on each piece, but it doesn't add a lot of time or trouble to set up because the instructions are made by people who speak fluent English and have a good sense of humor. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and a hammer. That's not a suggestion. The back of the bookshelf is sort of like a wood grain cardboard tri fold board you would use for a science project. You will hammer the backing on with tack nails. It's so easy my toddler helped me! Once it's on, it looks way nicer than I expected. I never thought during this set up that a drill would be nice. All the pieces screwed in nice and easy without needing a lot of hand power or force. I wasn't able to get the screw covers on, but I don't think the hidden cams are visable when you put books on your shelves. It's actually a very beautiful shelf and has the flat sides where the trim pieces don't stick out so you can set multiple shelves side by side for a library wall. Though it stands taller than me (I'm 5 foot 6) the top shelf is still easy to reach. It's shelves are adjustable to accommodate really tall, thick books as well. There is one step when you flip the shelf over face down to install trim pieces. You'll need to support the center of the shelf up off the floor with either books or a piece of packing materal. So when you unpack, hold onto the long piece of foam and use that in the center when you flip the shelf over on its face. The instructions said to build it on carpet or a soft surface to prevent scratches, but since tile floor is what I have, that's what I built it on. As long as you're gentle, there is no problem. We made it without a single scratch. Overall, I'm in love with the shelf and wish I had an entire wall of them! I wouldn't even be upset having to set up 3 or 4 more just like it. ... show more
