  • Nice Looking Bookshelf... Lots of Work to Assemble
I specifically bought this bookshelf because I already have the Heritage Hill desk and lateral file cabinet, so natually this is the one I wanted to add to my office. LOOKS: This shelving unit has the same look as the other pieces to the Heritage Hill collection, so it fits in perfectly to the look of my office. STURDINESS: I'm not a big fan of the side panels because are not one continuous piece. It definitely is not very sturdy while you are trying to assemble it (more on that later) but once it is fully assembled and secured to the wall it seems very sturdy. I do not anticipate any issues. STABILITY: A wall anchoring bracket was included with the product, so when it's properly attached to a wall there will be no concerns over stability. They did not include a drywall anchor with the bracket, so unless you plan to screw this directly into a stud, you definitely need to have a drywall anchor on hand to use. ASSEMBLY: This is where it gets a little frustrating. I am no stranger to assembling pieces of furniture from kits like this. I understand why they have chosen to use the hidden screws and L-brackets everywhere, but it does add time on to the assembly. It probably took me about 90 minutes to assemble this product. The trim pieces that go on to the front of the shelves (around the sides, top, bottom, and fixed shelf) make the shelf look like a higher quality product, and the L-brackets you use to attach them have oval-shaped holes so that you can adjust the positioning of each piece of trim to make everything line up right. You can adjust the positioning so that you don't see any of the unfinished wood or have ugly gaps. Or so I thought! This trick worked fine for everything except the 3 adjustable shelves which also have a trim piece that go on the front, but for the life of me I could not get everything to line up properly. I read this in other reviews so I was prepared to do some troubleshooting and adjusting, but I could not get it to look right, so I just left these pieces off. You really don't need them. It makes the shelves easier to more around and it still looks great. The directions offer some "hints" on what to fix. There was a 1/4" gap between the edge of the shelf trim and the edge of the trim going down the side of the shelf. So the directions tell you to adjust the side pieces of trim to close the gap. Well the problem with doing that is after you adjust the side trim then the other edge of it no longer lines up properly with the edges of the trim piece of the fixed shelf. Another tip: You don't have to leave the thing laying on its back the whole time you are trying to screw in the hidden screws or the L-brackets. You can carefully rotate it onto each of its sides to complete the installation of all the trim pieces, and it actually makes it easier to make sure they are lined up properly to each other the first time. I was just careful doing this because it's not very sturdy while it's being constructed. They also include a touch-up marker in the package as well that really is the same color as the wood finish. I had a couple pieces that had minor scratches on them, probably from shipping. I had great luck with the marker by just coloring in all the scratches and then rubbing all around it with my finger. One larger spot needed this done about 3 times, but when I had finished, I really couldn't tell it was ever scratched, especially at the "normal viewing distance" I would normally see it from. ... show more

  • Sauder book case
I bought this bookcase because I thought it look looks like good quality wood and I needed to replace my old bookcase it’s sagging and was made out of plywood anyway the quality of the word is not real wood it’s also plywood it just gives a look like those shelves are very thick also the back of the bookcase is pretty sturdy cardboard but it did not match up at all and the nails wound up going through the shelves of the bookcase which messed it up it was relatively easy to put together and I thought for the price I was getting a really good quality product but in reality not really ... show more

  • Boy-oh-boy don’t get me started!
SOME assembly required??! Totally misleading! It’s very pretty and I’m pleased with it BUT, It took two people about 5 hours to put this thing together. My other half, being mechanically minded, had a difficult time putting it together. I looked at You Tube for help and they threw it together in half hour- what? after several false starts? I was admonished to pay for pre-assembled products in the future, but we are still together lol ... show more

  • but decided to order one bookcase to make sure I liked it before buying more
I was looking for an economical alternative to buying expensive wooden shelves for a home library. I was prepared to buy about nine or more of these units together with a couple of the two-door bookcases for my library, but decided to order one bookcase to make sure I liked it before buying more. I am so glad I did, because I will not be buying anymore of these. I was impressed with some of the reviews, but having experienced one of these for myself, I cannot recommend them. I had a great experience with Sauder in 1991 when I purchased about six bookcases similar to these for my den. Back then, the bookcases had long, solid pieces for the side of the unit. They lasted over 25 years and still looked good. As seems to be the case today, most budget bookcases now consist of two pieces for each side, thus they depend upon their strength from the cardboard backing that you nail to the back which braces the unit. You are warned not to stand your shelf upright until that is attached. That is my first complaint about these. You are not told anywhere in the description that this unit consists of two-piece sides. I would have reconsidered if I had known that. I purchased a cheap bookcase a few months from Big Lots for $30 and it had the two-piece sides which was my first exposure with this cost-cutting change from the older bookcases. You have to be very careful when moving these so as not to stress the unit. I cannot imagine these lasting 25 years like my prior Sauder bookcases. My second complaint is how long it took to assemble. The instructions provide you with a link to an 18 minute assembly video which I watched. I also read the instructions. What took so much time was adjusting the angle brackets which the decorative molding attaches to. It literally took me a couple hours alone to adjust those so that the moldings did not expose the underlying unfinished wood. This was an issue for the molding that attaches to the case itself as well as the molding that attaches to the shelves. The instructions tell you to cut out a 1 11/16" template for the placement of the shelf molding. The template, however, is 1 10/16" long not 1 11/16" long and the proper distance from the edge of the shelf to the molding should be about 1 3/4" long so you have to eyeball the extra 1/16 to 1/8.. If you don't, you will have two different size gaps on each side of the shelf molding. Maybe that wouldn't bother most, but it bothered me. I wanted it to look nice. It would have been nice if the molding pieces extended to each side of the bookcase molding so as not to create gaps. My third complaint is that two of the angle brackets used to secure the upper molding to the front of the bookcase block the placement of the third bookshelf when you are trying to place it into the bookcase. As a result, you have to leave the pins out on one side, then place the bookshelf where you want it, and then put the pins in via the underside of the shelf. It's a bit of a pain. Lastly, the instructions, recommend a weight limit of 25 lbs on the first, third and fourth shelves. A weight limit of 50 lbs is recommended for the bottom shelf and 40 lbs for the second permanently-secured shelf. Most heavier books are taller so if you adjust the first shelf to accommodate the taller, heavier books on the bottom shelf, that necessitates moving the shelving pins up higher for the first adjustable shelf. That results in a very narrow shelf distance between this first adjustable shelf and the second permanent shelf. I paid $86 plus tax for this, but you can find nicer shelves on Craigslist for less. The difficulty with Craigslist if finding matching shelves if you want to set up a library or similar multi-shelf space. So for me, I'll keep searching for a nice, strong, but economical matching set of bookcases. ... show more
