  • Perfect for smaller living room or bedroom
Style: HW-S60B Pattern: Soundbar
This soundbar is a replacement for the Samsung S60A, which has been great, but the S60B offered some new features that made me interested enough to try it. This soundbar is in a decent sized bedroom (the bar is over 12' away from the listening position) and centered on a wall that is approximately 11' wide. Movies: While this bar is advertised as featuring Dolby Atmos, it has no upward firing speakers to reflect off the ceiling, so it relies on an electronic algorithm to trick your ears into thinking that sound is coming from above. In some respects, it works, at least from the perspective that the soundstage is larger from above than the S60A it replaced and there is some content that makes it seem like the sound is overhead. That said, I'd give it a 3 out of 10 for this aspect - if you're looking for overhead, get a bar with upward firing speakers. Otherwise, the soundstage is slightly larger than that of the S60A and, due to the side firing speakers, does 'trick' your ears into thinking that there is some sound coming from the sides, and at times, even behind. I'd give this 7 out of 10. Voicing through the center channel is as good or better than the S60A, and as good as the Q910B in my living room. Overall, the S60B is a solid upgrade from the S60A and is great for a smaller living room or bedroom, providing you aren't looking for earth shaking bass. Guardians of the Galaxy 3, The Super Mario Bros Movie and other Atmos encoded movies sounded great, as did Dolby Digital and DTS HD films. Music: I'd say that the S60B is just slightly better in comparison to the S60A. The biggest difference being slightly better bass response from the S60B. Again, there is very little bass content to be found below about 100Hz as this is a small soundbar relying on small speakers, so if bass heavy is your thing, plan on adding a subwoofer or look at a soundbar that includes one. The Alexa feature worked flawlessly. Add ons: After connecting a spare wireless subwoofer from a Q80R that I was no longer using, and using a set of SWA 9100s I already had for the S60A, this soundbar became a full fledged surround sound system. Bass extends down to around 40Hz, while the surround speakers fill in the areas that were devoid of sound before. Notes: All observations, both with and without subwoofer and surround speakers and for movies and music, were done using the Adaptive Sound mode, with SpaceFit turned on and all other features such as voice enhancement turned off. ... show more

Style: HW-S61B Pattern: Soundbar
Overall It is overtly designed for a smaller place and limited budget of home theater. Given it is not a premium soundbar, the sound coverage and sound quality are unexpectedly good. Dolby Atmos / DTS Virtual:X - it works Dolby Atmos sends the sound to listening position via the ceiling, plus the DTS Virtual:X that "alternate" an virtual surround sound without rear speakers, tested and they both work for our ears, although the given choices of connectivity doesn't make it easy for us (see below). AVA - it's clear The built-in Centre Speaker and the exclusive AVA (Active Voice Amplifier) does make dialogues and even whisper in movies sound clear and sync well. Airplay / Tap-Sound - it's good Been tested Airplay, streaming music via Wi-fi and Bluetooth, proper functioning, and Tap-Sound works like magic as well. Voice feedback - it's disturbing Tried Alexa, like another comment said, it's way too loud for a small living room, so we switch it off. Personally, I don't like voice input or hearing voice output from the device as feedback for mode conversions, fortunately we can use the APP to bypass the voice operation. HDMI CEC - it's not perfect HDMI CEC works well, somehow it contradicts other CEC that have been paired between our Shield TV and LG TV (a.k.a simplelink in LG), so we compromised to keep it running with the S61B's remote. Connectivity - it's a bit complicated There is a known issue we choose to accept before purchasing, a fact that S61B provides ONLY ONE HDMI port, not like other brands soundbar they have two HDMI ports you will have one for HDMI eARC and another one does HDMI with passthrough as Box >HDMI> Soundbar >HDMI> TV or Box >HDMI> TV >HDMI> Soundbar, We first tried Optical instead --- not good as it will disable Dolby Atmos (opti do not transmit Atmos metadata). We were worrying that Bluetooth may be incapable of maintaining zero delay synchronizing audio with video, at last it proves that we worried too much. Box >Bluetooth> Soundbar + Box >HDMI> TV works fine. We were told it can be resolved by replacing our LG TV with a Samsung TV, as the soundbar can connect with Samsung TV without further wiring. Regarding Samsung’s Q-Symphony technology, the soundbar would pair with an Q-series Samsung TV without further connection and provides an unique experience to hear playback from TV and soundbar simultaneously. Before that if we do not give up on the obessive desire to replace Bluetooth with HDMI, we still can try our luck on a splitter (like samsung's One Connection Box) --- in another word, it is an unresourceful complication caused by limited option, in which an extra HDMI port could easily resolve -- looks like a design on purpose to promote their ecosystem rather than cost saving. Expandability - it's fancy To complete the experience S61B can be further connected (through cable and separated power plug) with subwoofer SWA-W510 and the rear speaker SWA-9200S (sold separately) to create a home theater system. In future we may want to consider these as to give further push toward home-theater experience, for now, we are overly easy to be satisfied, we probably choose to upgrade our TV first when it aged further. As a personal choice - it worth the money Our decision to buy this soundbar was triggered by the fact that we purchased an Nvidia Shield TV pro and upgraded the Lan cable and experienced stunning 4K video, we realized we wanted to spend a little more to appease our listening experience. Learned from friends of Hi-fi (high fidelity) enthusiasts that every further level of accurate sound reproduction of high end stereos and ranges, as to retain sample rate and bit depth that can be lost during digital to analog conversion process, they would demand deep pocket investment that cost more than luxury vehicles. Some people recognize themselves and find their soul in music, some found theirs in movie watching, I don't think S61B is made for fellows on the fanatical side of high fidelity pursuit. As an all-in-one choice for movie watching, S61B will not sound as good as a high fidelity audio set or any other music playback oriented soundbar, but as a low-price upgrade apart from TV audio, its quality of experience is amazing. ... show more

  • Great budget solution for Samsung screens
Style: HW-S50B Pattern: Soundbar
I expected our new Samsung 50" set would be a bit weak in the sound department, and it was, so I hunted for a compatible sound bar that would not break the bank. This model also from Samsung was not too elaborate, unobtrusive looking, and it has the nifty feature of syncing its own speakers and the small ones in the TV to create a more expansive sound. Dialog is much clearer and closer, music is pretty good too, with "some" bass versus none at all for the TV on its own. My cable TV remote controls the volume and mute, so I put the supplied remote in a drawer after setup. This unit meets my expectations overall. ... show more
