I’ve used a lot of different luggage setups over the years, including going back and forth on whether or not I prefer softside vs. hardside luggage, but one thing I'm happy to report is that when it comes to both softside and hardside luggage, Samsonite is still a winner. I've gone with lesser brands before because, well, Samsonite bags aren't cheap. And bags from other brands often look just as good at first -- but, seriously when it comes to durability, my older Samsonites tend to run rings around newer luggage I've bought in-between, in terms of being far less like to rip, crack, end up with a busted zipper or missing or wobbly wheel, etc. I mean, they're not indestructible -- and I probably shouldn't overhype this brand-new set since I've only had these new cases for a few weeks at this point, so I can't say for sure they're still going to be in great shape after a few years of trips -- but based on all the other Samsonite bags I've owned or still own, I'd say I've got a few decades of experience here that gives me some confidence that I'm not just falling for a brand name -- Samsonite is the real deal, and this new set looks and feels as solidly constructed as I was hoping it would. Now, that's not to say that this is the highest-end luggage set either -- it doesn't have built in USB charging points or hidden compartments or bullet-proof lining or anything exciting like that -- it's just basic luggage, mostly, but don right.... I mean, it's a pretty standard softside luggage set that lands right where you’d expect from Samsonite: Nothing too fancy, but practical and well thought out. The two-piece combo (a carry-on + a very large checked-bag) is a nice pairing -- the carry on is big enough to cover a short weekend trip on its own (well, for me -- my wife would probably use two of those haha), while the 29" bag is massive. And of course the soft-sided design makes packing a little more forgiving when you’re trying to squeeze in that last jacket or pair of shoes, or you need to squish some luggage into the trunk of a car -- I like hard-sided luggage too, but it can also be cumbersome in some situations (and doesn't usually stack as well in a garage when not in use, etc.), so old-school soft-side luggage can still be a winner in a lot of situations. And that's where this set works well: Usability. You get multiple exterior pockets, smooth all-direction spinner wheels, and a handle that adjusts easily. That kind of everyday functionality is really the point here -- easy to maneuver, easy to organize, and flexible to pack. The tradeoff with softside luggage, like usual, is that it’s not going to protect your stuff the way a hard shell would (not a worry if you're just packing clothes, but it could be a concern if you're packing more fragile items), and it can look a little less structured (and a little more worn) over time But I’d say this is a good, reliable, no-drama travel set if you value flexibility and convenience. If you’re looking for something more rugged or more polished-looking, you might lean hardside instead (and I'd give Samsonite a thumbs up for their hardside luggage as well; and the price difference is usually all that much these days, especially if you can find a set on sale).

This Samsonite soft-side case is a great carry-on with thoughtful features. It costs more than the discount brands, less than the elite brands, and delivers good value for its price. For most major airlines, the dimensions for a carry-on in 2026 are 22x14x9 inches. If your bag looks larger, you'll be asked to put it in the sizer. If it doesn't fit, they'll transfer your carry-on to checked luggage and assess a significant fee. To avoid that, it's important that you know your carry-on meets the size limitations. That's why I ordered this carry-on. It meets the criteria as long as I don't unzip the expander section to make it bigger, and as long as I don't overstuff it so that it bulges. Samsonite invested good effort into mobility. This case rolls effortlessly, whether on all four wheels or on two wheels when pulled behind you. The bag is light weight and easy to lift over curbs and into overhead bins. There are handles on the top and side so you can carry it as needed. The raise-up handle is easy to operate and sturdy enough for its job. On the outside, there are two double-zippered compartments covering nearly the full size of the front, and a smaller compartment on the side. The front compartments provide quick access to large flat items like a laptop, tablet, or reading material. It's tempting to stuff more in the front compartments but, if you're flying, that might bulge the case too large for carry-on. The side compartment is perfect for a passport or phone. The rear has a pull-out ID card for name, phone number, etc. The main case is a top-open design, as opposed to clamshell. When lying flat with the cover open, you have all the space at your disposal, like a drawer. The cover has two zippered pockets for organizing items like socks and undergarments. The main compartment has one zippered compartment for, say, toiletries. A transparent zippered pouch is included in that compartment . The largest part of the case is open space. A snap-together strap holds your clothes in place once packed. The case is rugged. To my wife's dismay, I banged it around in my shop to see how it held up. That's something you want to know before a trip, not during a trip. Our upcoming bus tour in Central America will see the case loaded and unloaded by workers every day. It may be on the top of the stack one day and the bottom another day. If it were to split, we'd have a problem in the wilderness regions of a foreign country. There will be no means of replacing it. That is why I didn't order a cheap model. This case gives me confidence we'll have a good journey. With everything considered, this Samsonite carry-on sits in a sweet spot. It's well designed, easily mobile and rugged. It costs more than cheap models, and less than overpriced models. This is my kind of carry-on.
