  • Flat wide feet in Speedcross?? Blasphemy!
Size: 11 Color: Mallard Blue/Wrought Iron/Vibrant Orange
Ok, so I bought these, so no free chicken here. I have size 11, wide / flat feet with a tendency to roll ankles & experience the dreaded guitar-string arch-fall. This has occurred my whole life, mind you. I’ve struggled to find good shoes / hiking boots. A few years back I grabbed a set of these on a whim (ok, desperation) after my Asolo GTX hiking boots rubbed my heels raw for the umpteenth time (also, did I mention I have Achilles bone spurs? They’re on my heel bone & curve to poke my Achilles tendon—convenient, amirite?)… I had to flex to my military combat boots to finish my elk hunt (Lowa Zephyrs). I resolve to find better / lighter footwear after the hunt. So I snag these things and yep.. they feel tight & narrow, just like the reviews. I stick with em. No blisters. No Achilles tendinitis / discomfort from the spurs. Just a bit of “dang these are tight” for the first few weeks. After a few weeks, I take these suckers up the Moanalua hike in Oahu. Yes, this is the legal way to the radar site of the “Stairway to Heaven” fame. A serious day hike for committed hikers. Zero probs. You’re Spider-Man in these things. Afterwards, I was smoked, but no foot problems. A week later, we do it again. No probs. Again. I watched my buddies in “normal shoes” eat it on slick mud / roots, etc. No probs for these, the BFG MTRs for your feet. So if you’re like me, big hobbit feet & in your 40s with sufficient gumption and income to absorb the cost of a failed footwear purchase or a willingness to take on the Amazon AI returns bot, you have nothing to lose by trying them. This is my third pair. I put em on.. said “dang these are tight” and stepped it out for 6 miles. They’ll loosen up! Still zero blisters. Zero spur probs. Zero tendonitis. I’m convinced these are the BEST SHOES MADE (that I’ve found). The tread will wear quicker than your average gym shoe… but the treads are super aggressive trail lugs… if you’re a townie speed walking concrete, you’ll rub the nubs off quick! Keep these to the trail & they’ll last you a good amount of time. And let’s be honest—the looks and the laces.. are fire! Initial reviews are cool and the gang, but 6 years of Bigfoot slinging lugs in mountainous terrain might be useful for the buyer on the fence. Be patient & step it out. ... show more

  • Awesome for Trail Running
Have had these shoes for a few years now. Worn them for about 200 miles of trail running. They barely show any signs of wear. Things that I love about these shoes Fit : they fit great. Comfortable and snug. I do not have to worry about tightening the laces to get the right fit. Grip : the grip is awesome. I can comfortably take strides without worrying too much about slipping. Durability: The trails in central Pennsylvania are rocky, loose rocks and some rugged terrain as well. My previous shoes(nimbus gel - also a great pairs of shoes by the way) bottoms fell apart under 40 miles of trail running in the area. The Solomons show barely any signs of wear after over 200 miles on them. They look great. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Excellent trail runners when terrain requires traction and grip
Size: 11.5 Color: Duck Green/Black/Evening Primrose
I’ve worn some 13 pairs of the Speedcross series through version 5. While I wear them on all types of terrain, I especially recommend these for their sole on loose and rocky climbs and descents; wherever you want to concentrate on your foot placement vs worrying too much about slipping or losing traction. As they have soft, pliable knobs, these soles grip very well and give me more confidence than more traditional soles with typical ridges that can trap small stones and dirt, which can cause you to lose traction. Think decomposed granite. If you’re running easy smooth singletrack, these might be more than you need but I wear for all trail conditions. Big fan of the Kevlar pull closure lacing system as it doesn’t come loose and can really be tightened. I prefer a tight fit. (Keep laces clean when tightening to maximize durability.). I also wear them for wet creek crossings as they shed water through their mesh fabric. I live in a desert climate but they work well everywhere I go as they vent moisture quickly. I get 300-400 miles out of a pair. Soft knobs wear down before shoe loses its integrity, but then they become my hiking shoes. (I’ve never tried the GoreTex version). ... show more

  • Invincible! Yet super comfortable. Tricky sizing!
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Black/Black/Phantom
Just took these out on the trails today for the first time and they are absolutely awesome. Stable and shore-footed, fantastic treads that grip anything. Never felt so invincible in a low shoe (not a mid or high hiker). I'm actually using these for mountain biking and they are very comfortable and grippy on the pedals and even better when you have to get off the bike. Speed laces are fast and convenient. I wouldn't call these heavy but I wouldn't call them lightweight either. They just feel normal to me. Beware of Salomon's sizing- their normal shoes run crazy narrow. I bought my standard size at first but I could barely get in them. So narrow it's like they're sized for kids. Comparing the treads to my wife's sneakers they were a half inch narrower! So I returned them and ordered the wide size, for the first time in my life- I've never bought wide shoes before. But I am pleased to report they fit perfectly. If you have normal feet, you will need the wide size. If you have narrow feet, you might be able to fit in the standard shoes. And if you actually have wide feet, you are probably out of luck. These shoes are not wide, they are normal width but labeled wide! Only worn once so far but I'm in love. No break-in required. Can't comment on longevity of course but for what I paid they better last. ... show more
