I'm a very big guy and 5 years ago after complaining how hard it was to find the right shoes, a friend recommended that I try out Salomon XA 3D Pro trail shoes, stating that they were sturdy and gave an amazing sense of control. I bought a pair being skeptical at first but since then, I have not worn any other running shoe. So recently, after walking ~10 miles a day every day for 3 weeks, I realized that the "bounce" had disappeared in the heel of my Salomons - it started out that I could feel every hit on the pavement in my now, though I'm shameful to admit, 5 year-old Salomon shoes. It was now clear that it was time to change them... Though the XA 3D Pro's were amazing (and they still are as the model has not changed in 10 years!), this time, I wanted a bigger heel cushion. This is why I decided on the Speedcross 4 model. Picking the right fit was easy as all the Salomon trail shoes I have tried have the same fit so all I needed was to order the same size as before. You should go try them out first in a store first as Salomon trail shes have a different feel/fit to regular "plushy" running shoes. Once I got them, I ran them through their paces and here are my Pros (+) and Cons (-): PROS (+) - The Speedcross definitely has better heel cushioning than the XA 3D Pro's. - Though Salomon's website states that they have less "control" than the XA 3D Pro's, I could not feel the difference. - You still get the same feel of lightness and that asymmetrical quick lacing system is second to none - The material of the upper is breathable and feels fresh even in the gym CONS (-) - The Speedcross has a studded sole pattern which is much more aggressive than the XA 3D Pro's - you thus feel the studs when you are walking on pavement - a bit of an annoyance compared to the XA 3D Pro's - The Speedcross is not very good on ice (I still use Goretex XA 3D Pro's in the winter...) So, highly recommended sturdy shoe with that Salomon control fit with superior heel cushioning. I would have given it 5 stars but then I asked myself: would I buy it again? My answer was yes because of the better heel cushioning which I need (I bought a Goretex version of the Speedcross 4 for the winter) but I must admit that the XA 3D Pro was a better all-around shoe. I thus reserved 5 stars for the XA 3D Pro... ... show more
