Description

Following their noir classics This Gun for Hire, The Glass Key and The Blue Dahlia, screen legends Alan Ladd (Lucky Jordan) and Veronica Lake (The Hour Before the Dawn) team up for the fourth and final time in Saigon. After World War II, Larry (Ladd) learns that his flying buddy Mike will only live a short while longer due to shrapnel injuries. In order to finance one last wild trip for his friend, he accepts a lucrative flying job from a crooked profiteer. The plane takes off with sultry secretary Susan (Lake) on board—who, of course, falls for dashing Larry. However, danger awaits them when they’re forced to land their plane—and smuggled cargo—in Vietnam, with the police hot on their trail. Directed by Leslie Fenton (Whispering Smith), Saigon is a breathtaking, romance-laden adventure for Lake and Ladd!Special Features: • Brand New HD Master – From a 2K Scan of the 35mm Original Fine Grain • NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historians Lee Gambin and Elissa Rose • Theatrical Trailer (Mastered in 2K) • Optional English Subtitles

Top Amazon Reviews

  • A good DVD production of a good movie
This is a review of the Italian DVD of Saigon, part of the Rare Movie Collection distributed by A & R Products (ASIN ‏ : ‎ B083GZDRDQ). At time of writing, Amazon shows four reviews: two, by males, express disappointment about the quality of the picture; the other two, by females, express disappointment that the movie is dubbed in Italian. In my opinion, all four reviews are a bit too subjective to be helpful to people wondering if it's worth paying a chunk of change for this DVD. So here goes with a different view. The way to hear the movie in English is to click "Selezione lingue" (select language) on the home screen and then choose "Inglese" (English) on the next screen. Return to the main menu and play the movie. Do that and you should be all set. Speaking of sound, the soundtrack has been cleaned up and leveled with Dolby. It is not Criterion quality, but it is clean, comparable in quality to (if not better than) many Warner Archive releases. Regarding the image: I've been burned (mainly by Spanish vendors) by receiving new DVDs with truly awful video, video in which even the main title, filling much of the screen, is fuzzy. THIS DVD IS NOTHING LIKE THAT. At the top of the DVD front cover is a banner saying "Doppiaggio originale d'epoca," or "dubbed from a vintage print." And that's exactly accurate. It happens to be an exceptionally clean vintage print -- or perhaps there's been some amount of restoration. You'll see almost no little flecks or dots or lines of the kind you expect in Warner Archive releases. The image is really clean. Is it as sharp as on DVDs digitalized from original negatives or master prints? No. This comes from a second-generation print, probably one sent to Italy in the late 1940s. For a Criterion-quality DVD or Blu-ray, Universal would need to get involved since it bought the Paramount back titles around 50 years ago. And Universal has over two decades consistently shown limited interest in preserving Paramount films. Another option would be for a university department like USC to do a restoration. (I bought a German DVD of a 1940s movie never released on DVD in the U.S. and was amazed that it contained a Criterion-quality restoration by USC.) In sum, given the film elements available and the lack of interest by Universal, Rare Movie Collection has done a commendable job with its production. As when one listens to mono recordings from the forties or fifties, it takes a minute or two to adjust to the limitations of the old technology. If you can make that adjustment, this DVD is well enough produced to keep your attention on the movie, not on the DVD. As for the movie itself, Saigon is an adventure-romance rather like ones being made 15 years earlier -- Mandalay, for example. The writers have wrought some fun changes on the formula and the actors are good to excellent. There's a dramatic scene lifted from Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent that compares very nicely with the original. One sign that the writers were following genre formulas: The script's characters are written as types -- nice guy, smart aleck, tight-lipped hero. But Ladd, as the hero, manages to convey enough of an unsettled psychology to support Lake when her character says she recognizes that he, like she, comes from an abusive past. And for her part, in the latter half of the film, Lake manages to project a tenderness and openness that I don't think the scriptwriters themselves knew how to write. On deadline, at least. She's anything but a type. The director wisely avoids sentimentality when romance comes to fruition. The movie ends with the stars holding hands, not smooching. So... I enjoyed Saigon for its adventure puzzle, its genuine emotion, and its craftsmanship. Four stars, which I'm rounding up to five to influence its aggregate rating. It's a satisfying adventure-romance. ... show more

  • Faithful comrades. Another fine job by KINOLORBER.
The KL blu ray of SAIGON (1948) is certain to put an end to complaints about the unavailability of a good home video. According to Kino, this is a “Brand New HD Master-from a 2K Scan of the 35mm Original Grain!” Picture and sound in this release are very good, and the disc has optional subtitles, the film's and other trailers, plus a commentary shared by film historians Lee Gambin and Elissa Rose. The comments are somewhat difficult to follow (accent?) and you may prefer to indulge in your own findings and interpretation. The theme of male comradery and loyalty must have appealed to a world recovering from war, as SAIGON was popular at the time, especially overseas where fans generally ignored professional movie critics. Filming was completed in early 1947 but the movie not released till over a year later, while Ladd's WILD HARVEST and CALCUTTA (both 1947) were still making the rounds. This was the fourth and final Ladd/Lake love team appearance, although both can also be seen as cameos in Paramount's all-stars troops morale-boosters, including STAR SPANGLED RHYTHM (1942), DUFFY'S TAVERN (1945) and VARIETY GIRL (1947). ... show more

  • Watch for the language. My dvd was in Italian.
Not the seller’s fault- I didn’t notice it was in Italian. Bought it for a birthday gift and didn’t notice it was In Italian until I gave it to the person. That was two days past the return date. And, I can’t find it in English - unless, it is a copy.

  • The video Quality is absolute trash!
The media could not be loaded. The video Quality is some of the worst I've seen. The seller should absolutely pull these from production. I wouldn't pay $2 for this quality. I understand that we are talking about 1947... I'm not talking about needing it to be IMAX quality but this is terrible.

  • unrepentant peddler of cheap bootlegs/burned DVDs
The seller shipped a DVD of such poor quality it appears to be either a bootleg/cheap burn, or even a cam-rip. Yeah, that bad. In brief, nearly unwatchable visual reproduction coupled with audio that's noticeably off-synch. When I pressed this seller for a reckoning, his/her response couldn't be any more damning: "We haven't watched this particular title ourselves; we can't comment on its quality." And again (second reply): "We can't comment on any DVD's quality." How's that for ownership. Imagine if this was the model for responsible business practice. "No, we don't drive-test the cars, or commercial jetliners we manufacture." Caveat emptor. Indeed. ... show more
