  • Perfect for me in my 30's
When an older female relative of mine broke her arm slipping on some ice I made a promise to myself that I would start a strength training program when I turned 30 to reduce my lifetime risk of osteoporosis. I wasn't sure where to begin so I bought a bunch of exercise DVDs and joined a gym. What I found was that going to the gym proved to be too much of an inconvenience. I hated commuting to and from the gym at the expense of spending time with my family. I hated waiting for other people to finish using the equipment I needed. I hated watching people further along in their fitness journey work out (envy on my part). I also didn't enjoy being watched (I felt self-conscious). Needless to say, I didn't keep going to the gym. I then tried a few exercise DVDs at home and in my out of shape state I just could not keep up with the programming. So I bought a nice treadmill and figured that walking regularly was better than doing nothing at all but I still felt I needed a strength training program. I bought dumbbells and tried lifting weights on my own. I ended up injuring my wrists and put the dumbbells in the attic. When I turned 34 I felt a renewed desire to start strength training, not just to build healthier bones but to build muscle that might help me to burn more fat when at rest so that I could lose some weight. I decided to give this DVD a try. I was remarkably surprised by Ms. Hathaway's gentle approach. I could do her workout on the first try (albeit it took a few run throughs before I felt I was using the proper form for the exercises - it's difficult to watch and exercise - you may want to just watch the routine the first time through to get the gist of it). She gave easy to follow directions on how to do each exercise, she didn't do so many reps that I felt too exhausted to continue, she emphasized the importance of stretching muscles after exerting them, she used exercises that engaged opposing muscle groups, and shared how the exercises could be modified if they were too difficult or too easy. I was so pleased with her approach and her demeanor! I really enjoy watching the DVD and following along. Using this DVD is a stress reducer for me as well because her breathing directions when exercising clear my mind. This is exactly the sort of strength training program I was looking for, I only wish I had started it sooner. I was initially drawn to the flashier DVDs that showed women my age on the cover (the ones that I couldn't do!), so this one gathered dust for quite some time before I used it. It is a far more sensible and sustainable exercise program that I now use twice a week in addition to daily brisk walks on my treadmill. I am noticeably stronger now and I've lost a modest amount of weight (while gaining muscle) so it's certainly been a win all around. I really believe Ms. Hathaway is setting a good example for women my age. I want to be strong and independent as I get older and I can feel in my body that real change has occurred since I started using this DVD. I'm stronger and my balance has improved, along with my posture. I plan to continue using this program and would definitely recommend it to other young women who want to take charge of their bone health and overall well being. ... show more

  • Such a good product which needs to be picked up by an organization that can continue to support it.
After viewing 9 different DVDs, I chose this one which is by far the best. It is well organized. You can skip forward or back by using the extra arrow keys that go a scene at a time. Susie explains the exercises well, mentions modifications, is personable. If you get down on the floor or a firm mattress, she keeps you in one position for several exercises, so you don't have to keep turning from back to side to other side which can be difficult with even mild hand, foot, or hip injuries. My only concern is that the significant price increase and used copies only indicates that Susie is not able to maintain her product and hasn't turned this over to anyone willing to do so. That's a real shame because this is the best I have seen. I've been using it for six years with some other exercises rotated in for variety. ... show more

  • Good dvd for learning modifications needed to accomodate osteoporosis
If you work out regularly, or have in the past, this routine will be very easy. It seems that it is really geared towards women who have never exercised or who are much older. I'm pretty young and have always exercised, including heavy weight training and i still have osteoporosis. The value in this dvd is in learning how to modify exercise so that strong muscles don't overburden fragile bones. I haul around 50 pound loads frequently. I had no idea i was putting myself at risk of fracture. The tips here will help me avoid unnecessary injury. The dvd is quite well done. ... show more

  • Safe, Effective Weight Training for Women 50+
Good variety of exercises that work the muscle groups of the whole body. You won’t get winded much, but you’ll definitely feel the results. Just choose lighter or heavier weights (dumbbells) to personalize your workout to your fitness level. I like that there’s no twisting. The instructor is completely scripted, which can be a positive or a negative, depending on your preference. Her voice is soft and encouraging, not drill-sergeant or high-energy, but I find her instruction just right. I don’t need hype. You may need to pause the video a few times, as the transitions are pretty quick, and you need your weights right close. Otherwise you’ll lag behind. This helps the 50- to 55- minute workout to go pretty quickly! You can download and print out her Exercise Log, which is colorful, fun to fill in, and motivating. About half the moves use no weights. I like this video a lot, and I don’t worry that I’m going to hurt myself! Session One is general instruction and Session Two is the workout. Only negative: if it was 20 -25 minutes and I did it every other day instead of 50 minutes every 3 days, it would be easier to work into the day’s activities. Summary: great video! I’m happy with it! ... show more

  • The exercises are easy to follow and the instructor is very watchable week ...
I've been using this DVD for a couple of weeks now. The exercises are easy to follow and the instructor is very watchable week after week; no annoying chatter or giggling. She's very professional, encouraging, and calm. The DVD is very well done. I can always hear the instructor and there are different camera angles that focus in on the moves. I'm very impressed with the shoulder blades and upper back exercises. I have never seen these before, and I've taken many exercise classes and used exercise DVDs. Strengthening these muscles makes so much sense, especially for me because my posture could use improvement. There is only one plank in this DVD, yay! My only suggestion for improvement would be for her to demo it done on the forearms/elbows as the easy position. She does mention you can go down to them instead of using your hands, but doesn't demo this as the easy version. Luckily I was shown this in PT because it's the only way I can do that plank. I can feel that I worked out the next day. My muscles in my arms and legs feel fatigued- no sharp pain. The stretching after each exercise is great. I have carpal tunnel so I'm reluctant to try the wrist exercises that are at the end of this workout or her other DVD with the bands. ... show more
