Description

Gilda (Dorothy Mackaill) thought she had fallen as far as a woman could fall when she got a call telling her a client was requesting her "services." But when the client turns out to be the man responsible for her fall from grace, Gilda flies into a murderous rage. Taking it on the lam, Gilda finds shelter in the arms of a sailor boyfriend (Donald Cook) who smuggles her to sanctuary and safety, or so he thinks. In reality he has booked her a bridal suite in hell. Too long imprisoned by obscurity, Safe in Hell is released at last. This pre-code crime classic, touted at the time as "Not For Children," is frank, startling and arresting, as gripping today as it was eight decades ago. Directed by William A. Wellman, Safe in Hell is full of terrors and delights, including the most striking ensemble seen this side of Freaks and a truly twisted stunner of a finale.

    • Very good 1930' melodrama
A lady of ill repute is unjustly accused of murder and finds an island city on a Caribbean island that is know to be a safe haven with people with a past. Unfortunately the men there are the same kind of creeps she had hoped to get away from. It has a surprising down beat ending and I don't think I will be able to watch it again.     • Lusty men
This pre-code film puts the actress in jeopardy most of the picture. Today it would probably rate a PG-14, but back in the early Depression censorship was rampant. Hollywood was under pressure to change its rules or face backlash from the Catholic Church. Good film.

Before the Puritans lowered the boom with their horrifying Production Code in 1934, there was real-life pizzaz in many Hollywood films, and this is one of them. Dorothy gives a wonderful performance in a snappy script. Highly recommended~!

This is a great precode film ! Dorothy Mackall is a good actress.. It's too bad that this is the only movie that she'll been known for.. If it hadn't been for the do gooders , miss MAckall may have gotten better roles
