  • Assembly required, apparently! Grab a hammer, bowl of water and a German Shepherd
Color: Oak Style: 12 COMPARTMENT
I bought this shelf for my husband's home desk to set his laptop on and organize some documents and printer paper for him. Assembly required? I must have missed that part... How in the heck do I assemble this *discretely *at 1 AM to surprise my husband? Grab a tack hammer, a small bowl of water and the German Shepherd (so the tapping doesn't sound like a knock at the door sounding the Padfoot Patrol from barking his head off! LOL - see photos.) Assembly is pretty straight forward. Just be sure to identify each wooden board first, line them up in order and assemble on a scrap of carpet or on a towel. Do NOT soak the wooden dowels in water, just work with 2 at a time! Finish one side before moving on, taking care to PRESS the wooden side to the bottom, do NOT tap the sides with the hammer (trust me on this!) Take a break after the 3 sides before going to the top board, those 12 wooden dowels will become tacky from the glue (activated by the water bath.) Tack on the back (check my nail pattern) while distracting the dog with his ball to keep his nose away from the hammer. It's ready to set on the desk! Next slide the front protector on each shelf, wide side down to interlock with the shelf pins. Install shelf pins, add shevles and it's ready to go! It took me an hour, including playing with the dog, grabbing photos, whining on Facebook AND writing this review. It's MUCH heavier than I expected - that's a good thing! Check out my photos if you have any questions. Customer service is 800.664.0042. All in all it's exactly what I was looking for so I'm definitely satisfied. ... show more

  • NI hate this piece of junk and have replaced it...
Color: Cherry Style: 12 Compartment
Generally, I really like Safco products that I've purchased in the past. This one says "Wood Adjustable..." and the picture is not at all clear about the shelves, but, that's where the trouble begins. Unlike my other Safco sorters, these shelves are and look like, cheap thick cardboard that is ill-sized. They do NOT sit permanently or even safely on their metal pegs the way they have in the past. If your hand simply brushes up against one of the shelves, the whole thing loses its hold on the back pegs and falls down. Also, one of the things that I recall is that in the past the shelves were sturdier and had a paper covered surface that looked like the grain of the rest of the organizer. Secondly, this is not wood, but wood composite, and hitting the dowels into their holes made them chip out through the bottom of the cabinet, leaving a bunch of pieces of wood chips on the floor. This is not as good as the Safco products were formerly made. I haven't put it into place yet, but I'm frankly worried about it carrying the weight of the things I shall place on the organizer - the same things I put on the previous one, but fewer of them. Maybe it will perform well, but I'm just not as happy with this Safco product as I have been with past products from the same company. Disappointed. I wouldn't say to not buy this, but do be aware that you're NOT getting a wood cabinet, but a wood particle product. ;-( Well, now I have had this piece of junk in place for months, and all I can think of doing is getting rid of it, which I AM going to do. I've already purchased a replacement from another company whose products I know better, and I can't wait until I throw this pile of &*() out. Everything I've ever put into it ends up on the shelf below it or on the floor because of the incredible instability of the shelf "system". Do NOT buy this. It isn't worth the money, and you can't glue cardboard shelves to metal pegs unless you want to have sticky epoxy glue dripping down - even the 5-minute epoxy glue. This is a horrible product. ... show more

  • Bought 2 so far!
Color: Light Brown Style: 36 COMPARTMENT
I have bought 2 of these so far (April, 2016 and July, 2016) and I plan to buy a 3rd. The individual shelves on the first one I bought are a little smaller than they should be and when I am removing or adding more brochures, the shelf may fall so I have to put it back on the pegs it is resting on. However, by the second one they had increased the size so that the shelves do not fall so easily when I am putting brochures into them. I like the fact that I can adjust the shelves so they can accommodate the brochures I have a lot of, so I put them on the bottom shelf and take out shelves above so I can fit them all in together. Overall, the shelf is pretty sturdy and I will probably have these for quite a while. It will be interesting when I get the third because I plan to put it on top of one of the others, which I am supposed to be able to do. As you can see from my picture, the top is pretty sturdy and can hold a lot. ... show more

  • Those "hardboard" shelves, are just thick cardboard. Cheaply made.
Color: Cherry Style: 12 Compartment
We purchased this to use as a family charging center for all of our devices, but I'm not sure it's going to work. The outer surface is an okay quality, but the dowel holes are not deep enough to assemble without some hammering and once you do hammer, they go through the outer side , creating cracks and holes in the finish. We even used a towel over a mallet rather than a hammer directly on the finish and got the same results. This really shouldn't happen. The other thing is that the "hardboard" shelves are more like pressed cardboard. They're pretty flimsy, and on my cherry finished shelf, are a white/grey color, so they don't even look decent. This isn't easily apparent in the photos as there's only one photo where the shelves aren't covered with paper and even then, they photographed in shadow to make them appear darker and with a smoother finish. In reality they have a cheap "pressed paper" finish. You're supposed to slide black plastic covers over the out-facing ends to help them stay in place, which does work a little bit, but it's not going to hold up to my kids pulling tablets and phones in and out. Sadly, this wasn't really discernable in the photos included in the description. Overall, this might be okay if you're actually using it for papers or another product that will cover the cheap-looking shelves, and it's mostly used by an adult who will use it carefully. Otherwise, go with a better-made product. I can't believe I paid over $40 for this thing. This is a significantly lower quality product than something from IKEA. ... show more
