  • Definitely for "Everyone"
Platform: PlayStation 5
Look, it may not be everyone's "cup of tea," but I've played this game with my 4 year old, my wife, and my mother in law. It definitely gets more challenging as you progress through the game, and my 4 year old has slowly gotten better at a lot of the early skills he found challenging initially, but I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 and I still find some of the more advanced levels quite challenging. That said, if you don't feel the need to complete the story, and you can just have fun exploring the creatively designed levels of Craftworld and building up your wardrobe to play with costumes and the myriad combinations of costume pieces, you don't need to be a hardcore gamer to enjoy the beauty and fun of Sackboy. Like another reviewer said: worth every penny. ... show more

  • Precision Jumping Fans Rejoice
Platform: PlayStation 5
It’s an okay game if you’re looking to mindlessly pass some time. Kids will enjoy it more than adults. The game hinges on your ability to jump and land precisely where a misstep means failure: as you progress, the jumping becomes harder and involves more complicated threats. Fun if you like that sort of thing. I don’t. Two big problems with this game—1st, it is centered around collectibles. If you are not adept at finding hidden stuff, you literally cannot progress in this game. You will not finish it, even if you succeed in beating every level. Second, as has been mentioned in other reviews, you cannot control the camera. What a pain! Are there paths above or below you? You won’t know unless you troll the internet, because you can’t see them. Finally, a personal gripe about bosses: cmon game creators, when you beat a boss, it is beaten. Don’t keep resurrecting it three or four times ala resident evil. It is NOT fun. ... show more

  • I had fun, but it's flawed where it really counts
Platform: PlayStation 5
First off, this is a children's game. The aesthetic, snail's pace, and overall simplicity is for children. Period. I play it because my son likes to watch it. It's very easy, aside from some rather pesky aspects that were likely included to simulate difficulty. Don't get me wrong, to some degree I did enjoy jumping around with my little Sackboy dressed up in whatever outfits and accoutrements my son requested. It's not without its charm. But where it really matters, the game fails. Your area of effect for attacks is only slightly larger than your character itself. They included a lunge to go along with your basic strike so you'd know what direction you were heading because it's difficult to get your bearings a lot of the time. ...and speaking of bearings, most of my deaths were from being too far from the camera and thus being totally unable to tell where I was, spatially. You end up going off edges or jumping up and hitting the bottom of another platform. I'd say 75% of my character deaths were from this. This brings up the camera. The point of the game, completionism, is hampered by the camera NOT MOVING when you dip off screen onto a secret platform. The camera just sits there and you're stuck not knowing what type of platform you're on and the camera not following. For this type of game, it is simply unacceptable. I'd say 10% of deaths are from this. (It's actually pretty hard to die in this game if you're even remotely trying). This brings up the final aspect. It's slow. SOOOOO SLOOOOOOOW. You run slow, you jump slow, you double-jump slow, you roll slow, the levels load kinda slow, the ending level ceremony where you count up your riches and take a photo is unbearably slow and I've found not a way to skip it. I'd say the final 15% of my deaths are from 'sprinting' (lmao) through levels just to get them over with, being careless for the sake being DONE, and wanting to shut the console off because this game just isn't engaging enough to keep me going on its own. I'm probably going to encourage my son to start playing soon, since he's getting to that age. He'll probably enjoy it more than me, but until that time, I just can't keep playing. ... show more
