  • Great cams for stock TC-88 touring bikes
This is a quality product that comes with all necessary parts except pushrods. Installation instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The only special tools I used were the inner bearing remover/installer, which is available on Amazon for about $100. (The rest of the special tools I made myself out of c-clamps, wood blocks, sockets, etc.) I installed this cam set in my '05 FLHT earlier this year and am very pleased with the results. The bike was pretty much totally stock, with the exception of the low speed jet and a set of Samson slip-on mufflers. Bike is noticeably more responsive to the throttle, and idle seems a bit smoother than before. I took a 3500 mile trip just after the installation, and it certainly was enjoyable to have the extra passing power. Gas mileage didn't change much...I was getting about 40 mpg (avg) before, and got about the same with the 509G. The bike is simply more fun to ride with the new cams. Another big reason I installed these cams is that I was concerned with the cam chain tensioners self-destructing. The bike had about 30,000 miles on it at the time of the install, and although the outer tensioner was in pretty decent shape, the inner unit was *very* close to failing. In fact, it broke into pieces when I removed it. With the new cams, I no longer worry about the thing failing when I'm 1500 miles from home. As far as the noise goes, yes, these are nosier than stock. There is a slight whine when the motor is cold, and whirring sound that reminds me of a panhead or generator shovel gearcase. Doesn't bother me. I'd much rather have a little more noise than a time-bomb tensioner. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this product. ... show more

  • Excellent part and packaging
Excellent part and packaging. Very complete kit comes with all the gaskets and o-rings that you need. I wanted to eliminate the cam chain tensioners in my old 88. I debated on the screaming eagle hydraulic kit, but decided on this because the cost wasn't much more, but you get so much more. The 509 grind has a nice sound to it and gives me more power throughout the RPM range. It doesn't come with an oil pump - so you may as well put one in while you're in there. Throw in a set of lifters while you're at it and forget about the cam chest for as long as you have the bike. Installation was pretty easy. Do some research on installation before you tackle it - and don't forget to check your crank run-out. If you read some forums, you'll find the guys that say you have to get the "special Harley tool". These are the same guys that trade in their bikes every three years, drink starbucks and sit down to pee. You can rent the blind hole bearing puller from the auto parts store to get the inner cam bearings out. They can be set with a standard bearing driver. You will need a shop press to service the cam plate. Your stock cam plate will be fine - no need to upgrade; the gear drive system does not put as much side force on the bearings as the chain system does. ... show more

  • Exceptional product
I purchased this cam set after doing much research into the dreded chain tensioner problems reported on my twin cam 88. I have an 03 Ultra so a hot rod it is not. However, it is our two-up cruiser and we can use all the bottom end grunt we can get. The S&S gear kits are "first class" and this price is a full 200 bucks below my local shop price. There is complete documentation with the kit and with the exception of removing and installing the inner cam bearings, can be done with basic shop tools. Look into getting the twin cam inner bearing puller on Amazon it works like a champ. The S&S kit comes with all the parts you will need except the adjustable push rods and there are several sources for those. I used the HD ones and they worked very well. S&S also offers an on-line video that is exceptionally well done. Now, why the 509 and not the venerable 510 set. The 509 grind is a relatively new offering from S&S and the reports are very positive. As stated, this is a two-up cruiser and we need bottom end from that 88 and this profile delivers it in spades. It has a very nice idle and has more torque from that point to well past 4000 RPM. Way faster then I turn that motor. At our usual 3K cruise RPM, the throttle response is super. Much more responsive then the stock package. The bike does have a K&N on the intake side and a true dual Bisini exhaust. Perhaps the 510 would have worked as well, but I am super pleased with the results. ... show more

  • Best price
Unhelpful seller but the cams and kit items are great. One of the outer bearings had a lot of play so after the seller refused to stand behind the sale, I purchased another bearing from amazon and it came with the same exact play so I installed it and it seems ok so far. At least this was the best price on these cams. Rode today and the bike sounds nasty and has more grunt, installed in the s&s tc3 plate, oil pump and lifters, stock pushrods, valves, springs. Big sucker, slow jet and v&h straight shots. ... show more

  • Great Kit, DIYers Think Twice
Top-quality parts and kit with comprehensive instructions. I'm a novice mechanic, but got it installed with a minimum of special tools (inner bearing puller and runout gauge - my 2001 Road King had precisely the maximum crank runout allowed; you might want to find a way to check that before ordering). Clever use of a propane torch and freezer obviates the need for a hydraulic press. But installation is at the outer limit of the capabilities of most shade-tree mechanics, whether you choose to R&R the valve rockers (which I did) or cut the pushrods and replace with adjustables. With 24,000 miles on my bike, I wanted to insect the whole valve train. I wouldn't consider this project without a lift. The gears make more noise, but it's a pleasing, clockwork sound; no whining. A reassuring sound, knowing those chain tensioners are gone. I notice little if any change in idle or in-town performance. Pulls a little stronger, maybe, but that could be the placebo effect. But pulling 2,000 vertical feet in seven miles is a considerable grade, and the performance at 60mph in top gear up that pass is quite noticeable, and just what I was after for two-up touring in Colorado and New Mexico. ... show more
