3rd time is the charm! Bought 2 other shelving sets and they were a huge let down, so honestly, didn't have high expectations for these.... but WOW!! They are so pretty, very sturdy and easy to install. Only reason I'm not giving a 5 star review is because the wall anchors that come with the kit are total junk. These shelves look great. Nice natural wood look, and they are very sturdy. I would have given 5 stars overall, but there are a couple of issues. The first thing is packaging. Each shelf was inserted into a bubble wrap bag before being placed into the box, but the bags were not sealed or taped closed and there was no padding to keep the shorter shelves from moving around during transport. So, there were a few scratches made by the mounting hardware as the shelves shifted in the packaging. The other issue is with mounting. They really need a mounting template, especially since they don't have a one-piece bracket. The mounting instructions say to use a piece of painter's tape to mark the holes, then transfer the tape to the wall, but it is hard to get the mounting tape level, and to know where to put the holes to get the overall shelf where you want it. I also bought two sets and needed to match positions on each side of my fireplace. After mounting the first two slightly unlevel, I came up with a better solution. I've included a couple of pictures. First, stand the shelf on the front edge, holes up, and put the mounting brackets in. Take four, 1 inch finishing nails and hammer them into the shelf where the center of the bracket mounting holes are, and leave the last one, either far left or far right, sticking out further than the other three. Measure exactly where you want the first mounting hole (the one you left sticking out further) to be on the wall to get the shelf positioned where you want it. Using a nail, put a hole in the sheetrock in that spot. Now, hold up the shelf, insert the nail you left sticking out the furthest into the hole in the sheetrock. With one hand, you can rotate the shelf around that hole until it is perfectly level, then bump the shelf with your other hand into the wall to create holes with the other 3 nails in the back of the shelf. Mount the brackets using those holes, remove the nails from the shelf, and you have a perfectly level and positioned set. ... show more

I got these shelves because I was looking for White Oak floating shelves. When they came, the color wasn't exactly what I wanted. I thought they would be a lighter beige/white with a grayish tone with a wood grain type finish. These were a bit darker and more brown in tone. However, I know matching the exact color I'm looking for is near impossible so I decided to go with these shelves. Instructions were included in the box, and in the instructions there is a link to an instructional video. Note - the videos don't include using anchors so I would highly recommend you find instructions on You Tube that explain how to mount floating shelves into dry wall with anchors. I didn't use either the video or the instructions and just did a You Tube search on hanging floating shelves. As for the materials, the wood is sturdy, but it does seem like it's a solid pine or such type wood with a stain. The measurements were slightly off as they were not perfectly the dimensions in width in the description. The hardware that was included was the exact same hardware used on the videos I watched which recommended specific floating shelf hardware so that was good. A few tips: don't tighten the screws into the anchors/brackets/wall before you make sure the holes in the shelves are lined up with the poles. Before you tighten anything stick the shelf onto the poles mounted on the wall to make sure they're aligned. You may need to move the brackets left/right to get them lined up. Also, you have to use the anchors if you're attaching them to dry wall. If you don't use the included anchors in the drywall, the shelves will fail. Another tip, don't use a drill, just a screw driver. I started out with the drill and I broke off the anchor tip, and started stripping the screws and anchors. My overall assessment of the shelves is that they are way better than anything I found at the chain hardware stores and they are much less expensive than the more pricier furniture stores. ... show more
