  • An excellent pen, but is it a good buy at $50?
Color: Black
I'm quite the pen connoisseur and have a collection that runs the gamut from Pilot G2s - which are my preferred daily drivers - to a couple of Tactile Turn Bolt Action pens to Mont Blanc and Pilot pens costing several hundred bucks. rOtring is often recommended in "pen communities" and I finally decided to give rOtring a go with the 800 model. Overall, this is an excellent pen: the build quality is awesome, it feels nice in the hand with quite a bit weight (which I prefer), has easily buyable refills, and overall looks great, if industrial. This has become my new daily driver, though the $50 price point makes this a bit difficult to recommend given the availability of other excellent options at lower, similar, and slightly higher cost. THE GOOD: - The pen feels excellent, and the twisting mechanism works perfectly with good feedback to indicate when the pen is deployed/retracted. The majority of the pen body is aluminum, and the knurling on the grip feels quite nice to me. The clip is stiff - maybe a bit too stiff, in my opinion - but works well. I love the gold accents on the tip of the pen, which are invisible when the pen isn't deployed. Overall, this pen looks and feels like a $50 pen, though some may not like the industrial aesthetic. I wish the red text was a different color, but I know this is rOtring's branding so not much to do about that. - The pen uses standard Parker-style refills which are easy to find - a huge plus since you will, eventually, have to buy refills. I didn't care for the included rollerball tip and immediately bought some needlepoint, Pilot V5-like tips from a third-party seller on Amazon which have worked perfectly. The use of a standard refill cartridge makes finding your preferred color and tip type easy, and the abundance of third-party manufacturers that sell Parker-style refills makes refills reasonably priced. Note: Parker-style refills are sometimes called "Parker G2" refills. Note that these pens do NOT use Pilot G2 refills, so when it's time to buy refills, make sure that you buy Parker-style cartridges, NOT Pilot G2-style refills. - I won't comment too much on the actual writing experience as this will be significantly influenced by the refill that you decide to use. The included rollerball worked well but was a bit too thick and "dry" for me, so I switched it out immediately, and I much prefer the needlepoint gel refills that I've been using. As mentioned above, the pen has a bit of heft, which I personally prefer, though you may not like this if you prefer super light pens. The pen body is pretty thin compared to other pens that I use - it's a bit thinner then a Pilot G2 - but, again, comfortable to use. Overall, the writing experience is excellent, and I haven't had issues with fatigue when writing for a bit. THE MEH: - I'll discuss this more below, but the price makes this pen difficult to recommend. To be clear, the pen is a quality pen and has worked perfectly for me. At a $50 price point, though, you have a LOT of options available to you, and I don't think I can justify paying this price for what is, essentially, an industrial-style pen, albeit a well-made one. For $20-30, this would be a solid buy and an easy recommendation. At $50? - not so much. THE BAD: Nothing! When it comes to this pen, the real question is whether the value proposition is there at a $50 price point. I really like this pen and will continue to use it on a daily basis, but I don't think that I can recommend it to someone who's only starting to get into the "premium" pen space. For $50, you can buy a ton of Pilot G2s which, while not particularly "premium," will give you a ton of pens that will probably last you months if not years. I prefer Pilor Juice pens personally, and you can buy a huge multicolor set at this price. For $100, you can get a unique and well-made Tactile Turn pen - I've got a couple of Tactile Turn pens that are excellent to use as daily drivers. To be clear, the rOtring 800 is excellent and a pleasure to use. If you like the look and want to give rOtring a try, go for it - I don't think you'll regret it. But if you're looking for good value, I don't think this is where you'll find it. As long as you can get past the price point, this is an excellent pen! ... show more

  • well-balanced writing instrument
Color: Silver
I've used Rotrings in the past and wanted to upgrade because Rotring had actually stopped making refills for my older version. This one doesn't disappoint as this still has the good weight balance ratio to allow for easy writing without tipping over or feeling too heavy on the paper.

  • Love it.
Color: Black
Everyoneone I let use it, comments about how nice the pen is. An older Rotring pen I have the coating wore down and I can see some bronze underneath. So far I haven't seen it with this one.

  • A bit pricey but nice pen
Color: Black
Nice pen. Good weight distribution. Not sure about the value for money. But it feels good in hand writing

  • BEFORE YOU BUY THE 800 READ
Color: Black
Let’s start off to say I only purchase rotring pens. I now hate using any other pen then my rotrings. I’ve purchased around 400$ worth of rotring pens and pencils and the only one I haven’t gotten is the quick pro. I usually loose all my pens I ever buy but I haven’t lost one of my rotrings. Just shows how much I love these pens and pencils. BEFORE YOU purchase the 800 pen I honestly recommend the 600 pen because I’m not a fan of the twist. To me personally the click feels much more superior. And honestly the gold accents don’t look that nice in person. BUT for the mechanical pencils it’s definitely ideal to get the 800 because the twist mechanism will protect the pointy metal part that the lead comes out of. On the 600 mechanical pencil the thin metal part for the lead is always vulnerable and can be bent or broken off. So in my opinion from someone who owns almost every option and color they offer I love the 600 pens more than the 800 pens but I like 800 mechanical pencils more than the 600 mechanical pencils! Food for thought before you make purchase because these pens are a bit higher end ... show more

  • want to love it. so much wobble in the tip i can barely get it to write.
Color: Silver
i am a lifelong parker jotter carrier. decided to expand my horizons. wanted the otring 600 but the 800 is much less expensive. first thoughts. okay, the shape will grow on me. it looks attractive. second thoughts. turn the dial and the pen extends in my opinion way too far out. wobbles when i try to write, so can't get a cohesive line out of it. when you turn the dial it feels cheap, but i have not opened it up to look at it. mostly out of fear it will not work again. i suspect this will not survive being dropped due to the sounds it makes when i open it. yet i still like it. will try the 600. ... show more

  • best writing pen I have
Color: Silver
I bought the pen due to having previously purchasing the 800+ pencil. The pen writes really well. I upgraded the pen refill with a parker refill kit, and this alleviates any problems with this pen. I cannot think of any problems, annoyances, or issues with this pen besides the price :)
