  • This thing got boom
Style: Roku Wireless Subwoofer
I got tired of my old 5.1 system constantly drowning out voices or becoming drastically louder during certain scenes and commercials. No matter how I adjusted, one adjustment would kill or enhance another sound to where it just got to where I felt like I was paying more attention to adjusting the sound than what I was watching. I was a little leary about purchasing the whole Roku set, the streambar, sub-woofer, and the surround speakers, but I was glad I did because it gave me the opportunity to try each unit individually to see if I really needed them. The streambar has great sound quality with unusually good bass. Not wall shaking, window breaking, roof collapsing, bone jellifying bass, but bass that is noticible and doesn't drown out the other sounds. The sound leveling and voice enhancement features really work. They do require some adjustment and I'll get to that in a moment. After 2 days I realized the streambar was doing its job as advertised, so I installed the sub-woofer. Now this is tricky, you plug it in, and then you have to go into the streambar setup app and configure the streambar to recognize it. But there are instructions going step by step, 1, 2, 3, and it's done. And it has some boom to it. I mean real boom. You kinda have to adjust that too. But for me, it's a keeper. Again after 2 days, I decided to give the surround speakers their shot. Each speaker is bluetooth connected, there are no wires other than each one requireing an electrical outlet. Each speaker also must be setup individually, but the setup is identicle to the sub-woofer, with instructions included. The only difference here is during setup you discover which speaker goes on the left and which goes on the right. There is a test during the serup. Of course I was wrong the first time, but easily fixed. These too have separate adjustments. I see a lot of comments about the inability to not have as much control over each portion of the system as you would with most sound systems. My old system had a remote that let me adjust the back, woofer, bass boost, cinematic features, etc. In fact it was confusing at times trying to get just the right setup. Of course there would always be something different coming out of the system based on whatever I was listenting to, DVD, regular TV, music, streaming from Netflix or Hulu, etc. And I would have to readjust again. Voices were constantly being drowned out, no matter how hard I tried. The Auto/PCM/Dolby.... settings made no difference. With the Roku Streambar and friends, I really don't see a problem, in fact I appreciate the simplicity of the settings and I've found that once set to my liking, I'm done. I get sound leveling, voice enhanced, big butt bass, and nice even surround sound no matter what watching. The various sound settings aren't on the remote, they are in the Roku itself. Easy to get in the settings. The levels you get are loud, louder, loudest, off, normal, that's all I can remember off the top of my head, but you get the picture. The volume itself is handled by the remote and you can set it up to use your TV remote sound and power if you have HDMI/ARC on your TV. I do and it works. There's even a setting to turn off sound leveling, although I can't figure out why you'd want to. I tried it and it sort of messed everything up. I'm a cable cutter. Antenna TV and streaming. I'm very happy I bought the whole settup at one time and tried them out. Because I was used to surround sound from the get go I believe it's why I decided to keep them all. You may feel differently, it's all a matter of preference. The streambar does an excellent job of attempting to give you surround. Sounds do ping off the walls and behind you at various times. The surround speakers just makes sure I get all of it. My sub-woofer settings are a low. It rocks, and with a small house, the neighborhood knows when I'm watching an action movie. Expensive? For the complete system yes. But so much simpler to deal with as far as adjustments. Like I said, set once to my liking and done. ... show more

  • Good for music, Great for movies...
Style: Roku Wireless Subwoofer
Two years ago I got a new tv, Roku TCL television, started streaming, kind of a big step for a senior. I immediately got the Roku soundbar, thinking it will be an easy setup with my Roku equipped tv. This stuff was a little intimidating to me, especially since many of my friends can barely turn on a computer. The soundbar was indeed an easy setup, but I soon realized I didn't need a Roku soundbar, and that I was paying for a feature that I had already, Roku was built in to my tv. But the soundbar sounded pretty darn good. I listen to a lot of music, watch a fair amount of tv and movies, and everything sounded very good, though I suspected the whole thing could sound better. While reviews of the subwoofer were overall positive, some cited overbearing bass without any option to control it. Some cited the bass distorting the conversation and dialog in films and this concerned me. I looked into it more, tried to address my questions online and indeed discovered that you can control the settings, but you have to go into your settings. That is easy to do with the Roku remote. The high ratings from users here on Amazon gave me more confidence to buy it. I was surprised by the weight and heft of the unit. It is heavy and sizable and seemingly very well made. That is a good sign in a speaker. As specified, setup is a breeze. But for music, it seemed subtle to me. My music sounded great, but not overwhelmingly or decidedly better. I wasn't even sure it was working, but put my hand on it and it was rumbling. I purchased Elvis. My girlfriend came over and I was showing her my new setup and playing some music. While she felt it sounded great, she agreed, it seemed subtle. But my music sounded great, and while I would say the difference is seemingly subtle, I think the subtle difference really enhanced the music. Then we settled in to watch Elvis, the new film. I went into settings and selected the movies setting and wow... the sound just jumped up through the roof. Contrary to some complaints, the voice and dialog was not in any way distorted. After watching Elvis, the next day we rented Elvis' film from 1958, King Creole. The songs had an amazing fidelity, super strong, clear, defined... we were both quite surprised. Tomorrow, the wireless speakers arrive... In closing, I will add that I am a child of the 60s and 70s, had thousands of records, and though never owned a tube amp, like a Mcintosh, I had some great systems and great speakers, JBL, KLH, Cerwin Vega, Polk. I no longer want vinyl albums and cds taking up space in my apartment, and appreciate the beauty of streaming and this fantastic digital world... wires all over the place are one big drag... This stuff sounds great, is well made, strong as heck... ... show more

  • Bought with the Roku sound bar. Love it!
Style: Roku Wireless Subwoofer
I bought this Subwoofer with the Roku sound bar to replace a Roku-3 and to add good sound to my TV. My TV has no HDMI ARC port, so I connected the audio from my TV using the included optical cable and an included standard HDMI cable in the same port that used to be my Roku-3. Setup was a breeze. Installing the subwoofer took all of 2 minutes. Plug it into power, press a button on the remote, and it connects to the subwoofer up to 30 feet away. The sound from the combined system is awesome. The Roku can be controlled by the included remote or via the smartphone app. Great sound. Lots of options. My only minor issue is that with the subwoofer set for Max Bass, there is a low audible rumble in the background of many shows. I just set it back to "Normal" mode to reduce the bass slightly, and the rumble goes away. I would certainly recommend this system. I plan to buy another for the bedroom set, but I will wait until I replace the TV with a 4K or at least a set with the ARC port (just to see how it works). ... show more

  • Powerful quality bass for a reasonable price.
Style: Roku Wireless Subwoofer
I added this subwoofer to my Roku Streambar Pro. It was very easy to install, just plug it in, follow the directions provided, and it was installed in less than 5 minutes including the software update. It gives you plenty of options for sound, such as movie, with more rich depth, to night mode, where the bass is reduced. I like the wireless aspect of this because it gives you more options for positioning it in different parts of the room withing 30ft, which is quite a distance. The 10 inch subwoofer and 250 watt amplifier is a great value for the $190 price tag. ... show more
