  • Good enough for Afghanistan
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
Using this on my Zoom H4n, mounted on my Canon 7D, shooting for Uncle Sam in Afghanistan. I quickly discovered that the Zoom was really bad about wind noise, whether it's actual wind, if you're moving, or if you're speaking into it. If you've invested in a Zoom, you absolutely must get this product. You're not getting professional quality audio without it. I was concerned about it coming off in heavy wind environments, like aboard helicopters (where I often find myself). No problems at all, yet. Strong crosswinds, full sprints, no wind noise at all. The only time I've discovered wind noise was directly under a Chinook helicopter last week. Of course, the video from that is completely useless because I was trying to save myself and my rig from being blown across the Afghan desert. So, this thing will stop anything, provided you don't have a tornado 10 feet in front of you. ... show more

  • Funny (and morbid) name for a must have device!
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
It's a little morbid calling this windscreen a dead kitten, but it works wonders on improving the sound quality in noisy situations. The Rode Dead Kitten is great because it fits perfectly on the audio recorder (Zoom H4n here) with an elastic hole that grips the recorder firmly. Unlike the foam screen included with the Zoom H4n that seems to fall off constantly. Also, unlike that foam windscreen, this one seems to actually work. Wind noise is eliminated in nearly all circumstances, probably not under gale force winds, but steady breezes are eliminated really well. What would be a constant hum without or with the foam windscreen included with the H4n disappears altogether with this. This isn't without its drawbacks however. Firstly, it also can muffle overall sound. Well duh, you might say, but what I mean is this: if you're in an environment with even a slight breeze... you need to get rid of it otherwise you get horrible wind sound, right? Well since the Zoom's included windscreen is pointless you turn to your dead kitten. But now you need to boost the audio -- and when you do that, you run into increased sensitivity to background noise and potentially even a little bit of that wind noise you were working to get rid of. So essentially it's a little harder to find a happy medium. Secondly, there's the name itself -- the dead kitten. If you don't leave it attached and you ask someone to hand you the dead kitten, you might get some nasty looks. In summary: Pros: Great at eliminating wind noise. Way better at staying where you want it than the included H4n screen Cons: Can muffle sounds you DO want People will make fun of you for having what looks like the old Troll dolls. Overall, definitely worth the 'price of admission' to use this on nearly all recording sessions or occasions even if you're inside (because it can get rid of some background noise. Just make sure you're recording at a high enough sensitivity to get all the sound you want -- and watch that you don't get sound you don't. ... show more

  • Good product, bad name.
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
This seems to be a good quality wind filter. I purchased it because it fits the X/Y capsule of the Rode NT4. It goes over the stock foam pop filter. I don't like the name! Maybe Dead Kitten means something else in Australia. I almost didn't buy it because of the name but I needed it. I hope no kittens were hurt during the manufacturing process. Would give it 5 stars but they lose two name related stars. -1 star for thinking of the name and -1 star for using the name. ... show more

  • Love it for Rode Stereo Mic Pro
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
First off, the Dead Kitten is BLACK, not the off white/grey/black seen here. I actually like the black better, but felt I need to mention this for those expecting the color shown. The Dead Kitten is a needed addition to any microphone as it does what it is supposed to do...suppress wind noise. On the Rode Stereo Mic Pro that I also purchased, it is somewhat a necessity due to the fact that this mic picks up sounds from a very wide area and not a focused area as a boom style mic would. The Dead Kitten does a nice job and very happy. ... show more

  • Very good windscreen, a little expensive
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
Purchased this for my Zoom H1 recorder, and it fits over the microphone snugly and will not fall off. It offers supreme wind screening, and only will I record noise from extreme windy conditions. The product also muffles the background hum a little bit, which probably means it cuts out some of the higher frequencies, but otherwise recordings sound great with this on. My only complaint is that this product is a little on the expensive side, and you can definitely find other products on Amazon that offer nearly as good wind screening with much, much cheaper prices. ... show more

  • "the poor man pays twice
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
It seems pricey, but once you've spent money for things that only marginally work, you realize the old adage, "the poor man pays twice." This works and works well. It fits over my Audio Technica recorder perfectly, and with the elastic band on the front, should fit most microphones and field recorders just fine. It may take a decibel or two off the microphone signal but doesn't create a muffled sound like other wind screens have. ... show more

  • Worked Great on Outdoor Video Shoot
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
I recently shot a memorial video outdoors by a lake and wanted clean audio of the speaker without having to wire him up. I place the H4n on a tripod with the dead kitten, pressed record, then was free to walk around with my video camera to capture the reaction of the congregation. The audio was very clean with little to no wind noise. I married the H4n audio recording with my video camera in my editing app and was very happy with the result. ... show more

  • Only Windscreen Worth Buying For Zoom H4N
Style: DeadKitten Windshield
Bought this for my Zoom H4N for recording outdoors. If you're planning on using your Zoom H4N outdoors, even if it's not very windy, this windscreen is a MUST BUY! I have another black, generic foam windscreen, but it hardly helps to keep the wind out of the H4N. The Dead Kitten allows you to record in basically anything short of a hurricane. If you're planning to record outdoors with a Zoom H4N, you won't regret purchasing this windscreen. ... show more
