  • Better than Colorado Sound & Lighting!
Color: Black
Better than the more expensive ones, that is for sure!
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2023 by DJ Philter

  • Good bang for your buck, but is it the "best"?
Color: Black
I have several Freedom Par Hex lights and I wanted to try one of these cheaper alternatives to see if it would be better to invest in these. The Best Par 50 is less than 1/3 of the cost of the name brand; to put that in perspective, you could get 24 Best Par 50's for what it would cost you to get only 8 of the others. That's a big difference! But how good are they? I will make some comparisons to my Freedom Par Hex lights. There are pros and cons to each. BRIGHTNESS & COLORS The Best Par 50 is bright, but maybe not quite as bright as the other when you put them side by side. Yet, it is still plenty bright. The red is noticeably dimmer when side by side, but the other colors are harder to judge, because they are also slightly different shades. The reds are spot on the same red. The Best Par 50 green is slightly more to the blue end of the spectrum (it looks slight blue green), and the blue is a deeper blue. The amber is much more orange while the other's amber is more of a yellow. The whites are the same and about the same brightness. The UV seems to be a bit more on the UV side - they are both more in the range of the 395-400nm UV, neither is 365, but I would say the Best Par 50 is probably more like 395 and the other is probably more like 400. This is a guess and not scientific measurement. You probably wouldn't be using either of these for a UV wash anyway, just using the UV to add a bit of sparkle to some colors. All this being said, the colors in any of these lights could possibly vary from batch to batch. All of my Freedom Par Hex lights were bought at the same time so I don't have any older or newer samples to compare against. Do note that the DMX color order of the Best Par 50 is R G B W A U, while the Freedom Par Hex is R G B A W U - the A and W are swapped. This means if you put them on the same DMX channels and try to color mix using amber and white, you won't get the same result. The Best Par 50 matches the color order of the ADJ lights I've used, but not the Chauvet ones. There are 32 preset color selections, and there are some nice colors to choose from. Of course, you can mix your own, or your controller or software might have preset mixes. I think the bottom line here is that the Best Par 50 colors are good, but I probably wouldn't recommending mixing lights from different manufacturers - especially if using for up lighting, and on the same wall. If you use different manufacturers, you definitely won't have matching preset colors except for the basic 6, and even those will appear a bit different. Beam size and spread on the Best Par 50 seems to exactly match the other light I am comparing with. DESIGN The Best Par 50 design is quite similar to the other. At first glance, you would think they are the same. However, a close look reveals some major differences. The Best Par 50 is smaller (it's ever so slightly a smaller square, but much less tall). This means it will sit closer to the floor and if you are using it to up light a wall, it will start lower on the wall. It is also a little lighter, but not by a significant factor. Still, if you consider 8 in a carrying case, the Best Par 50 allows you to carry the same number of lights in less space and with less weight. There is a lip on the "front" of the light - presumably the part you would have away from the wall and facing the people. This would help to shield some light from being directly aimed at the people. This lip is smaller than the other light, but it is still there. I'm not really sure how effective either light's lip really is. The smaller lip does mean less wasted space in a case, if you are making the case as small as you can. The controls of the Best Par 50 are on the bottom. This conceals them, but also makes them harder to access. If you want to walk around the room and do a battery check, you would have to pick each light up. The other light has the battery level meter on the outward facing side of the light - they are dim enough the not be distracting, yet you can just walk around the room and look at them. The Best Par 50's battery level meter is not only on the bottom, but it is also quite (unnecessarily) bright. It could even reflect off of the floor, giving off colored highlights on the floor. These could show up in photographs. I consider this one of the major design flaws of the Best Par 50. The XLR in/out jacks are on the "rear" side of the light (the side that would face the wall). I think this is a better design choice, especially if you want to connect an XLR dongle. You cannot connect an XLR dongle to the other light unless it is a short dongle. I do comment Rockville for sticking with real XLR connectors and not the RJ45 connectors starting to appear on some other lights. The Best Par 50 has a carrying handle on top that is similar in design to the other light I am comparing to. However, it's operation is not quite as smooth. However, they could have left it out totally, so I'm happy it is there. It does the job of giving you a handle to pick the light up out of the case. The Best Par 50 utilizes a special 16.8V charger with a barrel connector. This is both good and bad. It means that if you need to charge the light, or to power it if the battery goes dead, you need the special power adapter. With the other light, it uses a standard IEC cable so you can easily get power to the light if you need it. Also makes it easier to charge a pile of lights at once. If you want to charge 8 Best Par 50's at once, you need 8 power adapters - just a mess of cables that you don't need. On the positive side, using low voltage means there's no need for a power supply in each light that you probably only need when you're charging them. This is probably the main way they are able to cut down on the size and weight of this light compared to others. I do believe however that standardization is important, and to have to worry about a special charger that only works with this model (well, possibly other Rockville lights) is just a nuisance. The final design item I need to talk about is the kickstand. There is a flaw with this as well. I like the way it works - it is a sturdy kick stand that you pull out and there is a small wedge which you place into a grooved area on the bottom of the light to keep the stand at the angle you select. But the flaw is that the stand is backwards. When you use the stand to angle the light, the side with the lip (what I would consider the front) goes down and the back side (the side with the XLR connectors) is facing up. Thus, the lip is no longer acting as a shield and the XLR connectors are not facing (angled) towards the floor. As a matter of fact, I feel like the whole bottom of the light is upside down, as every time I got to pick it up to use the controls, I have to flip it around because the LED display is upside down. FEATURES The Best Par 50 has all of the features you would expect from a light of this type. It has preset colors (32 of them), color changing and fading modes, sound active mode, strobe effect, and wireless DMX. I feel that most of these color modes are probably fairly useless - I would guess most users will either pick a static color, or use DMX to control the light. The free running color changing, fading, and pulsing modes are pretty to look at for a demonstration but are not practically useful in real life. The wireless DMX is of the "open" Donner variety; It is easy to set up and is compatible with the wide variety of other Donner compatible accessories available on the marketplace. You're not getting locked in to some manufacturer's system like D-Fi or WiFly. If the wireless DMX is receiving, it will repeat the received signal to the DMX out port. If DMX is received through the DMX in port and the wireless is on, the light will transmit that received DMX over wireless to other lights. So you can take incoming DMX from a cable and have the light act as the transmitter to other wireless DMX fixtures - it transmits the whole DMX universe, not just the few channels the light is set to use. THE BOTTOM LINE Although I can b e critical when comparing the Best Par 50 to competitors that are 3x the price, the bottom line is that when you're at an event, in most cases, the audience probably won't see any difference at all if you're using the cheaper light. What they WILL notice is that you might have many more of them - say 24, instead of 8, spread around the room. The biggest differences are to you, the end user, for convenience and standardization. I think the main thing is to pick a model and stick with it unless you are using the disparate models/manufacturers for different purposes (i,e,. don't mix manufacturers for your up lights, but you could use one for up lights, and another for your booth lighting) PROS * Super bang for the buck, yet not making too many compromises * Smaller and lighter than the name brands - you can carry more, easier * Still has real XLR connectors * "open" wireless DMX (Donner) protocol CONS * Battery level meter is unnecessarily bright, can reflect on floor * Battery level meter is on the bottom, so you have to pick up the light to view it * In my opinion, the kickstand is on "backwards" * Requires a proprietary charger cable (16.8V) * "Glare shield" is small (but it has one) * Handle mechanism is a little flimsy (but it has a handle) Conclusion: I'm still on the fence about if I will invest in Best Par 50's or continue to build my Freedom Par Hex collection. Two of my Freedom Par's need new batteries - I would buy two new Best Par 50's instead and still have enough money left over to take my family out to dinner - or probably sell the Freedom Par's with the dead batteries and get enough to buy another Best Par 50 or two. The Best Par 50's put out good light, which is the main focus of the product, but I feel that a few design choices that were made don't quite fit with the "Best" in the product name. Still, these are a solid buy at their price point. ... show more

  • good light but wedge version is better
Color: Black
I was pleasantly surprised by both the BestPar50 and the rockwedge. If you want wireless DMX, good battery life and decent color, both are good options BUT---Rockledge is better. Why? - Longer battery. Full RGBW lasted 16 hours on wedge vs 12 on par50 - par50 has a wallwart DC charger. wedge has standard IEC - major deal breaker - par50 carrying handle is really annoying when you put it in the case, it prevents the fixture from sitting properly. brightness is similar, cost is similar. Wedge is slightly larger, but both still fit inside 12' box truss. If you want a freedom par knock off, go for the rockwedge. 1/4th the cost, and so far I am digging it. ... show more

  • Almost as good as freedom pars
Color: Black
We own about 40 of these and 40 of the freedom pars. Side by side the colors are equally as rich and bright. The units are smaller as the charging transformer is external. The kickstand to tilt them is a little wonky, and most people think it goes backwards, because logically it seems that way, but you still do it the normal away it just takes a little mor finess. Battery life is equal to freedom pars if not actually slightly longer. At the price point these are well worth the investment. ... show more
