  • Reminded me of Kingdom Hearts.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I bought the game because it gave Kingdom Hearts vibes. Needless to say, I did enjoy the game and it does have it's difficult moments. I love being able to play the different characters. The only thing I'm left puzzled by is the actually ending of the game. This would be after you beat Chapter 34. It's one of the bonus episodes. I'm hoping someone will get online and explain it. ... show more

I really enjoyed this game. It’s an action rpg with an interesting story. Graphics are good. Great music. If you like The World Ends With You I highly recommend it

Game is somewhat interesting (giving me Kingdom Hearts vibes with the combat) but nothing else that has it stand out.

  • A mess
Platform For Display: PlayStation 5
I like the game, but it's not very good. There's a lack of variety in the environments (mostly around Shibuya and in forests; forests that all feel the same and are very linear). The combat is the best part, but it is also a bit simplistic in terms of the actual attacking. One attack combo, two abilities (you can equip different ones) and a super move. There is some depth to combat, but not how you'd generally see in an action RPG. If you swap out while your current character retains MP and is doing an attack it will stay out and attack alongside you. This is helpful in tougher battles or bosses. You can do this so all three party members are fighting at once. That's one thing to consider while fighting. The other is the most complex part, which after 30+ hours to platinum the game I couldn't really get used to. You run out of MP and you are taken into a different type of state where you cannot attack you instead have to dodge around or parry to restore MP (it also slowly regens, but you want to parry to get back into it). A well timed one will get you the full MP bar with a bonus attack that slows time (this can also be built up over time or smaller dodges). A normal one will do half roughly. The problem, for me at least, is that in order to do this you have to actively stop moving and simply let the attack come at you. Then you have to wait for a round icon to show up and then you have to press and hold dodge until the round bar goes fully around and release on being filled. This was very hard to get used to and I never did. It's an interesting idea, but I would always just dodge like 99.9% of other games because it's hard to relearn that for one game. It's such a fundamental aspect to so many different types of games and this game is asking a lot of players to relearn such a mechanic. It's a cool idea. In the attack state your MP slowly decreases as well so you don't want to be dodging while in that state. So in that respect it's really interesting dealing with different phases of play like that. The main issues beyond that are the lack of budget shows. There are cutscene transitions that are very jarring. There will be ingame -everyone stands around and mouth flaps at each other- cutscenes for 99% of the time, but the 1% has some really nice CG animated cutscenes that are really cool with really good lighting. Then it cuts to the flat, bland looking world of the main game and the visuals you'll see the whole playthrough. I could overlook that, I grew up on a lot of early RPGs that did this exact thing. However, what irks me is when the ingame cutscene has them say standing in the middle of a park about to fight and then it teleports you under a bridge to fight instead of the open space you already were in (because they didn't program battles for every area of the game where you'd have one / didn't put the cutscenes by or in the actual fighting areas) and then when you beat them it will do the victory pose, then teleport you back to the cutscene area. It's very annoying the 500th time it happens. It's a pet peeve of mine since the solution is seemingly so obvious and wouldn't have really needed additional costs. Just move the cutscene or battle arenas around... There's also a kind of 'wanted' (trending) system where when you utilize magic in public you start to trend on social media, once it trends too much super police show up and one shot you until you're leveled up enough to stand up to them (70ish). This is a really cool idea. There's also an added 'stress' bar that when full triggers your magic so you can't control your magic and you have to contend with the trending. The problem is that all you have to do to clear it is leave the areas. The town is in zones with load screens between them. There are also awkward (seemingly place holder) circles to "hide" in but they're not really hidden so it makes no sense why it would stop people being able to make you trend or stop paying attention. There's no explanation about these circle areas of 'magic'. One can only assume they make you invisible, but given the NPCs see you go in there it still doesn't make a lot of sense in terms of world building. And it just makes things a chore rather than what I think they intended to be some kind of stressful thing for the player to balance. As items are also often hidden from you without using your magic first (until post-game you get a spell that you can see them at all times). It just feels half baked. Combat can be pretty exciting at times, and I can see what they were going for with all these under cooked mechanics and I hate to be too harsh on what clearly is a team trying to do something but just doesn't have the talent or funds to accomplish it in a way that makes it all come together. The story is interesting, I will say a few moments feel a bit underdeveloped if not outright like they forget some scenes because there's a discussion with one person and then after that you're told to go walk it off as if you just had some heated argument but it was just some minor discussion about something and then that person you don't see again until the end and the justification for why they left and things happen just doesn't make much sense. Particularly due to certain things still being there, I can't get into it for spoiler reasons but it just didn't work well near the end. There's also post-story content which is kind of cool, but also underwhelming. The final boss isn't balanced around your player level os if you were trophy cleaning up before the boss like me and were level 99 then enjoy 2 shotting the two phases of the final boss with ranged magic. Oops. And the post-game boss is so overpowered and crazy, he can stun lock you and end your run. And the ending after that is kind of not great (I looked it up after the second unfair death). Though I will say part of getting stun locked would have been prevented had I used my move to slow time, but had it not been ready then I would have still been stun locked as he can teleport to you and hit you while a different AoE attack is going off and you take damage from it and are stuck in place as he does his unavoidable hit that otherwise wouldn't do damage. There's also a NEO The World Ends With You mission which was pretty neat. How they got that team up I'll never understand if Sony can't even get Square Enix on board for Astro Bot cameos. But I digress. It's a mess of a game. I wouldn't pay full price for it (I did, and wish I hadn't even though I did like the game despite all it's problems) ... show more
