  • Great Beginner Dual Band UHF/VHF Amateur Radio for Price!
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
I have an Amateur Extra license and am fairly new to amateur radio. I have numerous HTs for mobile and currently use this as my Home Base UHF/VHF transceiver. This rig was VERY easy to program with the provided cable and Retevis software. I spent ALOT of time researching mobile/base rigs as a beginner amateur radio enthusiast and found that this radio is a copy of a proven rig and is the same exact one available from numerous different manufacturers (Anytone, Btech, etc). Upon further research I found that the Retevis version has slightly better reviews (all manufacturer versions were reported to sometimes get hot but I have yet to have that be an issue at all). I also found that the Retevis version has MIC GAIN capability when some of the other manufacturer versions do not. My setup to get me on the air includes the RT 95 transceiver, AC to DC power supply, coax cable, and provided mobile antenna. I would like to note that the power supply Im currently using provides the RT 95 at a steady 12.3 Volts in standby and drops to 10.3 Volts when transmitting on HIGH power WITH NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER. Of course this is not ideal as the RT 95 is rated at 13.8 Volts but I am in process of placing a permanent outdoor antenna solution and upgrading my power supply. I just wanted to let others know that might be in a similar situation that It WILL work at lower voltage if needed. Im currently using the provided mobile antenna indoors, placed on a metal oven cookie sheet and in front of a window in an adjacent room. Again, not ideal but works in the interim while I get the permanent antenna in place. Ive had no issues getting on the air with the provided antenna out of the box and hitting many repeaters, up to roughly 25 miles away. There are many "roundtables" held on different local repeaters that I have been able to join and be a part of since getting setup. There is a connected repeater I am able to interact with that has facilitated contact all the way to Arkansas while I am in the St Louis area on VHF. Operation of the radio can be a little cumbersome at first but there are cheat sheets on Reddit that will ease the learning curve and help with the many acronyms that are used in the settings. The radio seems to scan at roughly 3 or 4 channels per second and there are many adjustable scanning variables available to adjust for your needs. Almost all buttons are able to be customized to fit your needs. This includes the buttons on the face of the unit and also those on the hand held MIC. The RT 95 has the ability to DUAL Monitor, meaning you can listen to 2 separate channels or frequencies at one time. You can customize a button on the face of the unit and there is already a dedicated button on the hand held MIC that is used to easily and instantly switches between the two monitored frequencies for transmit capability. Almost all settings are easily adjustable with the press of only a few buttons, to include the orientation of LED screen to help when mounting. You will more than likely want to fully customize and personalize yours for ease of use in your daily operations. Sound quality is great and has the ability to be LOUD if needed. I was contemplating buying an external speaker but at the moment I dont see the need. Frequencies and channels are easily named to anything you want with I believe a 6 or 7 character limit. I program my amateur radios identically for ease of use regardless of which I'm using. What is Channel 10 on one radio is Channel 10 and the same frequency on any other. I recommend programming GMRS/FRS/MURS, while being cognizant of the legal POWER restrictions if you do not have a FCC GMRS license. I then program all of the given NOAA weather radio frequencies followed by all the listed repeaters in my local area. A good source to finding operational repeaters in your area is REPEATERBOOK.COM. I then program the VHF/UHF National Calling frequencies and local and national emergency frequencies. I group all into channel blocks and do the same across all my amateur radio equipment. This leaves me all Channels beyond all already programmed open for programming on the fly, especially when traveling and setting up temporary use repeaters or frequencies. All in all, so far I am VERY happy with this radio and have been joining net groups almost nightly in my area. This is a great beginner amateur radio for those first wanting to dabble in UHF/VHF. I'm planning on keeping this in use as my dedicated UHF/VHF rig for both mobile and home. Once my permanent UHF/VHF antenna is up on my home, the mobile antenna will be installed on my vehicle and the RT 95 will be easily switched between home and mobile until I purchase another. Would recommend 10/10. AD9HD, 73 ... show more

  • Reasonably priced with some great features! And some things no so great, but for the price...
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
I bought this a '24 black friday sale at a reduced price. It's advertised as 'rugged', and I want to eventually put it in my UTV. After playing with it for a few weeks I can say I like it rather much! Initially I found it confusing and difficult to navigate. The manual is not very descriptive nor overly helpful. A few trips to Youtube and about an hour and a half playing around with it, and I felt much more comfortable with it. That being said, it will be a 'set and forget' radio for my wife, as she would not be able to navigate it's many features and do things like change the pl tone or power for example. Not that they are hard to do, rather she just chooses not to invest any energy into learning how to do it unless it is very simple. One of the first things I did was change the band plan so I could use GMRS and all of the 70 cm band. It's easy to do, just press and hold a couple of buttons and power it up (there are many vids on Youtube to help you with this). After that I got CHIRP connected with the usb cable (that it comes with!), I set about getting it programmed. CHIRP now allows you to program many of the settings such as programable keys too, so that's a plus. (As an aside, I did use Retevis' own programming software, which works similarly to CHIRP except it WILL NOT let you copy and paste frequency data between different channels such as you can with CHIRP. Huge drawback.) The unit has six programmable keys on the face, which with a single push of the 'func' key allows you to program a second feature into each one. (In other words, each key can be programmed to do two seperate things.) Combined with the microphone, that's 16 user programmable buttons. A lot of settings can also be accessed by press-and-hold too of the key, which I found a great feature. This helps keep you out of the lengthy menu system. The menu system is huge, it has everything in it, and you can program each programmable key through it as well as through the software. The dual-watch feature is a poor attempt to replicate a dual-receiver radio, but it does allow you to virtually monitor two channels at once. In simpler terms, you can set it on a channel or frequency on the A side, then set it to any other channel or frequency on the B side, and then the radio will rapidly check both until something is heard. Once traffic is received, it ignores the other until the traffic is done. So if you are receiving traffic on the A side, and B calls, you won't hear B until A finishes. It can't scan a side and listen to the other at the same time either. You can turn this 'dual watch' feature off which I have done with mine. Initially I had a pretty significant point of annoyance in that the selector knob could only change the channel. I'd never had a radio where you couldn't just reach and turn the knob to change the volume. Instead, you had to push the programmable key used for volume, and then turn the knob. But then, I find a setting that allows you to change that knob to volume first and use a key to change channel. Wow! Incredible customization. Now here are the things I like; - A great screen! For such a small thing, it is brilliant and generally easy to read unless in the bright sunlight, however putting your hand over it makes it easy enough to read. - Lighted keys! This is a feature my $1400 Yaesu "portable" HF radio doesn't even have! - It's nice and loud! No need for an external speaker. -The programmable keys! once I got them configured, I loved them! My microphones programmable buttons can; monitor with the squelch open, change power settings, scan on/off, and reverse listen - all with a single button push! So easy! The programmable buttons on the radio are fully configurable too. I like this! It is surprisingly heavy, as the case is really just a giant heat sink. Which it needs because it doesn't have a fan, which is fine by me as I'm going to mount it in a dusty vehicle and I don't want a fan pulling in gobs of sand into it's guts. I've had the radio get pretty hot with high talk time at full power, but it cools off readily enough. Just the same, I wouldn't mount this in your glove box or center console where it gets no air over it. I wished it had a detachable face, which it doesn't... but then I find a guy on Ebay selling kits that allow you to make it detachable. This is perfect when you want a dash mount but there is no room behind for a full radio. My only other gripes, which are minor, is that I've been told several times I have low audio. I generally speak pretty loudly and with the mic close to my mouth, but even so this radio suffers a bit from it. Not unreadable, just a touch quieter than it should be. And there is no setting I can find that can change that. And it scans very slowly compared to most other radios. But, as I plan to mount this in our offroad vehicle, it shouldn't matter that much since it will likely be left on one channel. Overall a great radio for the price! ... show more

  • Works great. Comes with everything you need. Works great. Comes with everything you need.

Super clear, loud, easy to program. Transmits and receives crystal clear. Ive been using baofengs and rugged radios, wanted something better/nicer and hardwired. My baofengs always pick up a ton of static, no matter the settings. This radio hasn't made a single sound other than someone else's voice. Has the right frequencies on one of the modes to be able talk to the rugged radios that others use. Zero complaints. ... show more

  • Great compact VHF/UHF radio. Easy to program, good price, strong audio.
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
I like the compact size, yet relatively large display. It's cool that the display can be flipped upside-down in case your mounting situation needs the speaker to be facing up, rather than down (the default). I didn't need to read the manual to program the radio - which might be due to my having quite a menagerie of radios in my shack (lol). But truly - this radio is not as complicated to program as even some handhelds that I own (e.g. AnyTone, Qwensheng, Baofeng, etc.). Audio output is INCREDIBLE! You can turn the volume up loud enough to WAKE THE DEAD! I haven't measured the RF power output on each band, but so far I've reached all of the repeaters that I should be able to reach from my location. Scan speed is a little slow, but not bad for a mobile radio. (It's no Bearcat scanner, but then again - it never claimed to be.) For many people's purposes, it should do the job in catching what activity there is. They microphone feels solid in your hand, and has decent layout. I think this is an exceptional mobile radio for the price. Very pleased to have this in my shack! ... show more

  • Great Radio!
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
Great and effective radio. I paired this with a diamond x200a antenna and 25ft of kmr400 coax and this has plenty of power and usage. With this setup I easily open repeaters at 75 miles. Easy to program and use. Audio quality is great and handheld is clear and intuitive. I would recommend this setup to anyone making a home base station or mobile setup. ... show more

  • My Experience with the Retevis RT95 My Experience with the Retevis RT95
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
I’ve been using the Retevis RT95 VOX for some time now, and honestly, I’m impressed with what you get for the price. It’s a solid dual-band mobile radio with clear audio, good power output, and a nice, clean display. The VOX feature (voice-activated transmission) is a great bonus—especially when I’m driving and want to keep my hands free. Programming it was easier than I expected. You can program it using CHIRP—just choose Retevis RT95 VOX from the model list. Make sure you have a working USB programming cable (mine used the Prolific driver), and it’ll save you a ton of time compared to doing it manually through the buttons. One thing I found out that really helped: You need to unlock the radio to use the full range of frequencies it’s capable of. Here’s how I did it: Turn the radio off. Hold down P4 + FUNC + Power On all at once. Once it powers up, turn the channel knob until you see the Mode menu. Hold the PTT button on the mic and turn the knob to select Mode 2. This opens up 136–174 MHz and 400–490 MHz. Turn it off, then back on, and it’s ready to go. Out of the box, it only had the lower part of the ham bands, so unlocking it made a big difference for me. Overall, I think the RT95 VOX is a great buy. It’s easy to use, customizable, and gives you a lot of flexibility—especially once it’s unlocked and programmed with CHIRP. A solid pick for anyone getting into ham and GMRS or looking to add a mobile unit to their setup. ... show more

  • Small compact and ticks all the boxes.
Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
Exceeded my expectations. Certainly the best $100 two band rig I've ever owned. (Been hamming since 1963) Does not overheat on extended QSO's. Sounds 4.0 on the air. Second speaker in mic is handy during mobile operations. Also volume adjustable from mic. Buying another for the second car. Works and sounds as good as my Yaesu 2900. Style: Mobile Radio+Antenna
I bought two of these. One for house paired with Diamond X30 in attic. Output watts above each advertised rating. Easy to program with CHIRP. Sound output fairly good. I use a 5"speaker in the house. Need one in the truck but have fed it through the AUX input with a 3.5mm audio male/male plug. Used the mag mount for a while but eventually put a Comet NMO mount. Can hit repeaters 30 miles in truck. ... show more
