Raiders of the North Sea is a strategy board game set in the central years of the Viking Age. As Viking warriors, players raid unsuspecting settlements, plundering gold, iron and livestock. There is glory to be found in battle, even at the hands of the Valkyrie. In order to win, players must obtain the most victory points by raiding settlements, taking plunder, and making offerings to the Chieftain. • Great introduction to Worker Placement games
Style: Game
Quick and easy to learn game that uses a popular mechanic in modern board games, worker placement. The basic concept is that each player has workers that on their turn they will place on the board in available locations that then either let the player perform some sort of action or gain some sort of reward. Raiders does this in a very simple and slightly different way than most other games. Each player only has ONE worker. On your turn you will choose to either Work by placing your worker on a valid, available space and performing the action or collecting the appropriate resources and then selecting a different worker on the board and performing the actions or collections for that space or Raid, if you have the proper resources, by placing your worker on one of the available raid spots on the board and carrying out the raid action there and gaining the associated worker, victory points and plunder. The easy thing to remember is that you will always start and end your turn with one worker. There are a few more nuances to the game than that, but this is a really quick game to learn and teach and loads of fun with lots of take that moments in attempts to foil your opponents. ... show more

  • Best board game - IMO
Style: Game
Best board game out there in my opinion! Wonderful replay ability and my wife and I have had many hours of enjoyment from this game. Works great with expansions and would recommend anyone to play. Great balance in strategy and a lot of fun!

  • A fun game, even for senior gamers!
Style: Game
I am a very experienced 75 year old board gamer. My go to game is "Advanced Squad Leader", but I felt my friends and I needed a change of pace. I found "Raiders of the North Sea" on a YouTube video and it looked like fun. It was! We were up and running for our first game and finished in about 75 minutes, with minimal rereading of the rules. A second game was in order. This was our first experience with "worker" games, and it won't be our last. ... show more

  • Enjoyed Crew Customization
Style: Game
I recently purchased this game because I liked the theme and worker placement mechanic. After having played it through once, I was not disappointed. One of the things I liked most about the game is how you can customize your viking crew. This added a fun element as certain crew members provided advantages depending on your strategy. There are many crew options. It also made raiding challenging because you have to consider which crew members you are willing to lose to further your goals. The worker placement element was fun because of the dual action turns: place a worker-take an action and pick up an existing worker-take an action. The components are great: The real metal coins were a great bonus! ... show more

  • Well-made game with solid strategy, just not in our regular rotation
Style: Viking Edition
This is a cool, well-designed game with quality components and a fun Viking theme. The strategy elements are well thought out, and it plays smoothly once you get the hang of it. Everything from the artwork to the tokens feels high quality, and it’s clear a lot of care went into the design. That said, it’s not something we reach for often. It’s a good game, just doesn’t make it into our regular game night lineup. Still, definitely worth trying if you enjoy resource management and worker placement-style games. ... show more

  • Awesome game. Must have.
This game is a lot of fun, easily learned and taught, and consists of very high quality components. It is the second game in a three game series. You do not need the other games as they are all standalone. However, with the addition of a small expansion you can link all of them together. The theme is fun and this worker placement game easily holds your interest. I have this game and Explorers of the North Sea (the third game, also excellent game, but different mechanics) and will be adding Shiprights soon. The night before it arrived I watched two YouTube videos on how to play while I perused a downloaded copy of the rules. When the game arrived the next day we broke it out and started playing. It's that quick to learn. The only think I would like to see from Garphill Games for this series is a 5, or 5-6 player expansion. ... show more

  • Pretty good game, measurements in picture
Style: Viking Edition
Recommend this for all ages… moderate strategy (but not necessarily needed to be a competitive force) resource management, worker placement (with a unique/enjoyable worker removal actions aswell) … a bit of luck when hiring your crew and a roll of the dice … enough strategy to keep me interested in playing it again.., I included a pic of part of our collection ... show more

  • A very satisfying, viking themed, worker-placement game
Style: Game
I showed my wife a video review for this game and I took her, "That looks pretty cool." to mean, "You should totally get on Amazon and buy that game right now!" So I did. It turns out this worker-placement game focused on raiding a neighboring countryside and making offerings to your chieftain is the perfect blend of strategy and luck for us. The rulebook is clearly laid out and nicely illustrated, the components (especially the silver coins) are high quality, and the artwork on the cards is wonderful. I can't recommend this one enough if you like medium-light worker-placement games. ... show more
