  • Read This Book Before Remodelling!
Having remodeled a number of homes myself (and without instructions!), I wish that I had been able to read this book before I had tackled those projects. Thankfully, I have read it in time to be ready for my next project, a 100+ yr old train depot conversion to a house. I highly recommend this book - the author is thorough, detailed and KNOWS his stuff. I appreciate the depth of detail that the author put into this book, taking the reader from the why's to the "how to's" and also offering immense resources that are applicable to most anyone. I also liked that he offers the "Pro Tip" throughout the book with practical advice. My father built houses throughout my growing up years, and other than the blueprint, I know that he didn't have a "plan". The plan was buy a lot (for the best price, but often in not the best part of town), select a plan (usually from the plan book) that seemed it would fit, and wasn't too costly or detailed to build. He preferred ranchers and split level homes mostly, but occasionally I talked him into a more architecturally-challenging design to build. He would order the plans from the book, then when they arrived, study them to understand what was going to happen. Then off to shopping we went. Having worked with Dad on numerous houses, he usually overspent on supplies (then returned what he didn't need), would often hire a sub-contractor who was a friend (or the cheapest person around) then not get the quality of work that he thought he was going to get. While my Dad did pretty good overall, I can see that it could have been much better with a little planning. The author of Remodel: Without Going Bonkers of Broke - gives us that planning piece of the puzzle. If you are planning on remodeling, already in the middle of a project, or just considering - make sure you READ THIS BOOK FIRST! ... show more

  • Required Reading If You're Considering Renovating Your House
When we started thinking about doing a house renovation, we sought advice from friends with previous experience. We got some good tips, but nobody thought to tell us what would have been the most valuable tip of all: Before doing anything, read a book and do research about the planning process itself. This book was super helpful and provided guidance on many topics, such as: - Where to source information about typical costs and return on investment - How to select a contractor and architect - Strategies for negotiating with contractors - What to look for in a proposal If you are considering remodeling your house, especially if you don't have a lot of prior experience, I think this book is a must read. It's well written, concise, full of practical information, and doesn't waste your time with fluff. ... show more

  • Want to avoid reno nightmares? Read this book before you start!
Before we ripped out that worn out kitchen...before we bought that fixer-upper house "for a song," to transform into a desirable rental and, absolutely, before we bought our current 'character' home, we should have read this book. Bonkers and Broke doesn't even begin to describe how much grief one home can cause, if you don't have a sensible plan and the expert help to whip your old house into a comfortable home you actually enjoy living in. The real value in this book is it doesn't 'talk architect' or 'talk builder' it talks human. Real people, real bad-old-house problems, real dreams and aspirations about what you need your home to be and a practical way to get what you need and want without committing financial suicide. Jim walks you through the Why, Smart Planning, Financing and Execution of your remodel. Well worth your time. It will save you stress, grief AND money. Very logically organized, but still an enjoyable read. His suggestions and how-tos on Making the Need List and the Wish List are brilliant and it leads right into refining your budget. If you're a homeowner, if you want to be a homeowner, or if you want to invest in real estate, you need this book. ... show more

  • A fantastic book to read before you start a remodeling project
Short review: I love the book, buy it and follow it! Long review: We are about to begin our first major home remodeling project. I don’t know what I don’t know, so this book really helped me past the steep (and expensive) front end of the learning curve BEFORE we even talk to remodelers. What I like most about this book: * creating a project packet - this process alone helped me to write out on paper ideas we have been considering for our project. This helped me to better understand the scope and potential budget and feel more prepared that I won’t forget anything when talking to remodelers. * the descriptions of all the professionals was very helpful - I have very little experience with this industry so it was great to understand the differences between designers, architects, and design build firms before I try to interview and work with them. Now hopefully we don’t hire the wrong one for our specific project. * questions to ask during interviews - again, not having worked in this field before I greatly appreciate the information I should be looking for regarding licensing and questions to ask of each designer/architect/remodeler. - one area that I still struggle with is defining the budget. I used a budget idea from another book. First, working through the project packet helped me outline the scope. Then I estimated myself what each of these might cost based on internet research. Then added 10% for surprises, 5% for permits and 15% for architect fees. The number was shocking. But at least I now know my priorities and how much I want to budget before beginning the project. I can work with the remodelers estimate and budget and compare it to my need and want list in order of importance to stick to the budget. This book lays at the process and requires a ton of work by the homeowners BEFORE you even begin the process, which is exactly what I needed to feel comfortable - and excited - to tackle our remodeling project. I’ll be reading it again before our project and referencing it as we get started! ... show more
