Bought these for my husband's birthday quite some time ago and they've lasted longer than the cheap ones he would get at a local sporting goods store. He always had to replace those ones every three months. Well, now he has these Red Wing boots and absolutely loves them. He's a truck driver and works 12-14 hour days. We also live in the PNW so he needed a pair of durable boots that resist water, fit well, and are comfortable for all day wear. These have great traction and perfect for the weather climate we live in. The money spent was worth every penny!

On this particular offering from Amazon, there appears to be multiple different Red Wing boots depending on which color you click on. The ones I got were style #8146, which are the moc toe version with the Briar oil slick leather. I have previously and currently own numerous pair of 6" and 8" lace up boots from Red Wing, Alden, and Allen Edmonds, all of which are made in America (at least for the Red Wing Heritage line). The latter two tend to be more expensive and for this higher expense you get a better quality leather and IMO a little better fit. However, I have always liked Red Wing boots, and while I have had problems with their foreign made products, the Heritage line is as good as Red Wings ever have been. The construction of this boot includes Goodyear welt, Vibram lug sole, cork midsole, nickle riveted eyelets, and a steel shank, all of which are what you want in a good work boot. If you need at good boot for 8 hours + on your feet wear, do not compromise on any of these features. Just a note on the Vibram sole, I had a pair of Red Wings that I wore regularly for 10 years and it took that long for the Vibram lugs to wear down to the rest of the sole. The 8146 does not have speed lacers, which I don't particularly like for 6" boots. As far as sizing and break-in goes, I recommend you have your foot measured or do some research online regarding measuring them yourself rather than going with your size in some other footwear. For an unlined work boot, I will always wear thick wool socks and with such I find these boots are very much true to size. I've owned other Red Wing boots made on the same last and I knew what to expect. For best results, visit a Red Wing store and have yourself properly fitted. I suspect some of the complaints with comfort others have experienced are due to improper fittings. You can also expect the boot to feel different after break-in as your feet settle into the cork midsole. I recommend going with your measured size initially, then sizing up or down as needed to get the right fit rather than relying on what someone else did, who may or may not have been every properly sized and/or may have a very different foot shape. The reason the 23 last has been used by Red Wing for decades is because it fits most people well. I also recommend that when you are getting measured or are trying these on, wear the type of socks you intend on wearing with them. Personally for work boots I go with a thick good quality wool blend that has a high wool content. Anything else and you're inviting blisters and poor comfort. Always wash wool socks inside out in cold water and hang them to dry. The leather on these boots is pretty typical of Red Wing boots. It's mid-range in terms of quality, but the leather is made thicker for higher durability. This means it's going to take longer to break in, but will eventually soften up nicely and flex the way your feet move once the creases form. The oil impregnated leather is going to last for many years even if you do nothing in the way of care, but if you want them to stay looking good keep them clean and brushed regularly and hit them with some leather conditioner and polish a couple of times per year. All-in-all I'd have to say I'm pretty pleased with my purchase. I have no reason to believe I won't get many years of good service from them as I have had from my other most favored pairs of Red Wings. Considering the quality of construction and proper elements of a good boot, these are an excellent value. Edit: So I'm more than a year into these boots. I wear them about once or twice a week as I have several other boots as well. They did break in quite nicely and after a bit of wear they look better than new. My only real complaint is I don't really like the Vibram sole on this boot. I have Vibram on other heavier boots, but I think I'd prefer the nitrile cork sole that's on some of the others in the Heritage line. Vibram might be a good thing if you needed the off-pavement traction. Otherwise it isn't well suited to this boot.

Growing up on the eastern slope of the Cascades in the 70’s and 80’s I wore Redwing boots almost every day either fishing, hunting, backpacking, hiking, etc. It’s been quite a few years and perhaps it was a fit of nestalgia or just the desire to put a good, American made boot back on my feet, but for some odd reason I decided to order myself a new pair of Redwing Roughnecks. These are the exact boots that I wore for all those years and when I received them I was instantly transported back in time by their leathery smell and the soft hand of the leather. I’m a solid 8 in all my shoes so I ordered the 7.5 and it fit perfectly (as per Redwings recommendation). When the big toe ends right behind the moc toe stitching, you’ve got the right fit. The boot shouldn’t crush your foot but you want it nice and snug so that the leather can mold to your feet as you break them in. The fit and finish of the Heritage line of boots is simply perfect and in my opinion, these boots are worth every penny. They are meant to last and should give years of service. Yes, you will need to spend time breaking these boots in and getting them formed to your feet. No matter how perfect the fit, it’s gauranteed that you’ll experience some heel slip (lift) at the beginning of break in. This is normal with a stiff sole boot like RW’s. As the boot breaks in and the footbed forms to your foot the heel slip will be greatly reduced. If you have less than a 1/2 inch heel slip you should be good to go. Just don’t panic and think you need to order a smaller size. You shouldn’t be in pain when breaking in a new pair of RW’s. These aren’t skinny jeans, they’re work boots. Within a few days you’ll notice that your heels are nice and firm in the boot. The end result is a boot that fits like a glove and will be unmatched in comfort and reliability. I love the vintage look and feel of these boots and the quality is outstanding.

Purchased this boot several months ago, and I get many compliments on them! I manage to dress them up and can wear them casually with jeans and a t-shirt. I also replaced the laces with a wax brown that is similar to the color of the boot to give them a classy feel, i have even wore them with a blazer and tie! They hold up well, the stitching is impeccable and the waterproofing is well done. I had actually did some power washing in them and they managed to resist any water damage as well as any significant aging. Water did get into the boots, however,so I don't recommend any heavy duty work loads unless you plan on doing a bit more water proofing with a wax. The boots were caked in dirt and grime and were soaked to the sole. I immediately took the right steps in reviving them by drying them off immediately, using a horse hair brush to remove any and all debris, and then following up with a leather conditioner. I also wiped out the inside of the boot to the best of my ability, and placed a decent amount of newspaper inside and left it overnight. They looked like new the next couple days! These guys can take a beating. The pair I received seemed to be slightly mismatched, but for the price I got it for, it was well worth it. The left boot was a little wider at the sole and toe box, and the tongue was made of a different grade of leather, softer than the right. This was alright due to its ability to conform to the top of my ankle much better, but was a bit unnerving at first since the right pair was stiff, and would apply pressure to the skin if tied tightly. If I had another choice, I would size down a half size, and I normally wear a 10.5 in sneakers,but that is only because the boot has conformed to foot,and stretched. Despite it being slightly narrow, the effect that occurs from your foot stretching out the leather gives it a very nice look, and makes it fit nicely. The leather is topnotch,and continues to keep its nice brown luster despite my constant wear. I wear them almost everyday. It is my go to footwear, and I will be purchasing another pair of red wings in the future.

They're kind of expensive, but I bought these because I got tired of boots that fall apart and can't be resoled or repaired. I like the sewn welt construction, Vibram soles and quality made-in-USA construction. Right out of the box I wore them instead of my hiking boots when climbing a mountain near here (about 1200 feet elevation gain) in the hope of breaking them in. I got a couple of blisters, but it does seem like they've softened up a bit. Wore them today when doing firewood and they already feel a lot better. Size-wise they seemed to fit about as expected, though possibly a bit narrow. I expect they'll stretch out a bit. Once broken in, with a cushy pair of socks they'd work tolerably well as a hiking boots, even if they're a bit on the heavy side. UPDATE 11 Oct 2013: These boots were comfortable right out of the box, but after using them for a bit I was finding them a bit too narrow, which after my feet swelled up while working actually made them pretty UNcomfortable. I didn't pay enough attention when I bought them, but they actually are a 'D' width, not the more normal for work boots 'E'. I took them to a cobbler and had him stretch them out a bit. They don't look any different, but they certainly FIT a lot different - and better. I expect they'll be fine now. My feet aren't particularly wide, but those who's are should probably take note when purchasing these boots. UPDATE 2 Jan 2014: It's been a bit of hassle getting these boots to fit right, but I think I'm finally there. I ended up taking them back to the cobbler for a second round of stretching in the toe box area, and they now are pretty comfortable. On my right foot, when I've just put them on I still sometimes feel like two of my toes are kind of pressed together, but that goes away when I've been wearing them awhile. I tried putting insoles in them and weirdly, that seemed to take care of the toes feeling pressed together, but overall the boots felt too cramped so I gave up on that idea. I've never had such trouble getting boots to fit properly, but recently climbed a local mountain with about a thousand feet of vertical, and came back with my feet feeling just fine, so I think I've finally got these things sorted. They're never going to be as comfortable as my expensive Italian hiking boots (Zamberlan Tofane), but they should be okay for little hikes and outdoor work on the property - and they should last just about forever.

These are not my first pair of red wing boots. These boots and my iron rangers are made in the USA with high quality leather and manufacturing. They are expensive but will last you a lifetime. The soles can be replaced (at red wing or your at local cobbler) when they wear out not like some of the cheap boots out there. The sizing is strange with Red Wing, different boots may not be the same numerical size across their product line. Also, the 7.5 runs a little narrow but be aware that these boots mold to your feet during break in so you will want a snug fitting boot but not painful when you first wear them. As far as break in, these broke in rather quickly compared to the iron rangers. They were fine after a few days of wearing. The leather is thick but pliable, the stitching straight and beautiful. The color is amazing and I was even considering swapping out the laces (just to be different) but any modification is just not needed. They are perfect out of the box. They are even better looking than the pictures show when you are holding them in your hands. I purchased these to use during the winter months as the treads are aggressive for snow and slippery condition. I caught these at a crazy price, a mistake that was quickly rectified. Otherwise, I would still be reading the reviews, looking at pictures and wishing I had a pair. In closing, high quality boots made in the USA, fantastic looks and pricey but will easily be there to share in your adventures and become your old friends. Head on down to your local red wing dealer to get a sense of the sizing or read up on message boards on suggestion for sizing if a dealer isn't close by. Do your research because you won't want to send them back once you get them!

UPDATED REVIEW: I've been wearing these almost everyday for 24 Days, 4-12 hours/day. They have broken in alright, although my Brannock size 13.5 D+ left foot is not quite as comfortable as my 13D right foot, which fits and feels great. My big problem with these boots, and the reason I have downgraded from 4-stars to 3-stars is due to the moc-toe design. At the top of the toe box, the two pieces of leather are stitched together, which is great. The edges of these two pieces of leather are then GLUED together above that stitching . This glued seam started to leak glue at about day 18 after delivery. Today (day 24), I noticed that the glued seams have started to separate significantly right around where the natural crease forms from walking/bending, etc. see photo. Again, since this is after less than a month of light/moderate use (walking, squatting down, sitting cross-legged at my laptop, I kicked a tire once or twice....gently), I can only assume that this glued seam will eventually separate completely down to the stitching. Since I've had them, outdoor/indoor temps have been from mid-30s to mid-80ss, I wipe the dirt and dust off regularly with a clean rag, no oil or other treatments. The quality of the leather itself and the stitching is not in question here, just the manner in which the moc toe seam is put together and my own observation that this design is not durable with regard to the glued seam. I'm all for a well-worn look in a boot, but as these seams blossom out like a flower, it will not look good, and worse, it erodes my confidence in the structural integrity of the boot. Someone tell me if they know different, but I have to believe that all Moc Toe boot designs must suffer from the same flaw, unless they use just one continuous piece of leather that is folded and stitched to achieve the Moc Toe look/structure.. INITIAL REVIEW: PRICE/SHIPPING: Just got these in Briar Oil Slick today. Fast shipping. Price dropped to $187 and snagged them. Some sizes/colorways are $270! MEASURES: On Brannock Device, my feet measure 13D (Right) and 13.5D+ (Left). I got size 12D. Learned the hard way you have to size down from my Iron Rangers (which fit WAY TOO BIG at 13D, but perfect out of the box once I got size 12D). You want these boots to be snug, even a bit uncomfortable at first - they will stretch out and mold to your feet (mine are already). LOOK/PRESENTATION: Out of the box, leather is stiff, flawless, not a scratch or blemish, but richly colored and textured. Perfecto stitching inside and out.. Hardware right where it should be. Vibram soles straight, shiny and new. Insoles centered. Left one was inspected by "Sherry", right by "Loriann". Thanks, ladies. With them on my feet, I am surprised that they are actually sort of sleek/low profile, and not anywhere near being big and clunky despite the Roughneck-chunky sole. Is it just me, or are these basically Red Wing Heritage Moc 6" Boot uppers with a vibram sole? Either way, they look great - better than the photos. I am very impressed. FIT: Getting them on the first time took some patience and effort. One does not simply slip their foot into Red Wing Boots. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as the tongue is sewn up to to the top to keep the dirt and water out. At first, I thought it might be a bust, but after some gentle pulling, got them on and laced them up. Laces could be a few inches longer, Ill probably replace with paracord. After wearing for a few hours, I can visibly see and feel the leather inside and out starting to mold to my feet. Right (smaller foot) feels pretty good, a bit of pressure on outside of big toe. Left (bigger) is getting pinched a bit from the pinky toe along the side a couple inches back along the side and a bit of pressure on the outside of big toe. For the other toes, its snug in there but feels alright.. You want to lace them firmly snug but not circulation-starving tight. Darn Tough Socks are helping the process. I don't expect anything like blisters or major chaffing. WHY I GOT THEM: I work in a semi-austere environment where rain, snow, mud, dirt, dust, rocks, hot, cold is a year-round thing. Need some un-insulated boots for the spring/summer, and I didn't want to subject my Iron Rangers to all of the wear and tear. We'll see how they do in the winter with wool Darn Tough Socks. Also, I've made a life-choice to prioritize minimalism, only purchase high-quality products, and seek to buy American first and at all costs, unless there is a special case or simply no alternative. PLUS, these boots look cool as !@#$% and wearing them makes me feel good. If you look good, then you feel good, and if you feel good, then you do good. Buying less-expensive, low-quality, low-fashion stuff that doesn't last and puts Americans out of work just makes no sense to me. CONSENSUS: I've only had them a few hours, and so far so good. I'll hold back on a 5-star rating to see how they break in and hold up. I'll update in a month or so.
