  • Amazing boots - worthy of your money (*edit 6mo* these are priceless)
definitely buy half a size to a full size lower than your current shoe size. the quality is unlike any other shoe/boot ive ever seen, but i come from a family that buys cheap shoes to "save money" I believe spending more for quality that will outlast cheap shoes by many years will be much cheaper. i got mine on sale for $185 so all around an amazing deal for something i hope will last many many years with proper care and maintenance. they are a bit stiff but from my research it takes a bit of time to break in and have the leather soles mold to your feet, so ill update my review after awhile of wearing them. I work at target so the main usage is logistics/retail working. the truck is very hard on clothing but not as hard as a job that these type of boots were made for. (Like construction or similar job) it feels good to be working and making my own money to make the decision to purchase quality items. i always do a lot of research before spending a large amount of money on something, as anyone should do. Update: few weeks later the shoes are comfortable with thick socks, I recommend the thickest red wing socks, makes a huge difference in comfort. Besides some scuffs the shoes are still amazing. I've conditioned the leather and they look amazing. Ill add a picture of them after wearing for a few weeks. Update: about 6 months later. I couldn't br happier with how they hold together even with how they get beat up every single day. Ill add a picture, and just remember this is after 6 months of a lot of abuse.. ... show more

  • Red Wing size
1st time to own Red Wing shoes. Been reading about them and know I should go down 1/2 a size for them to fit right. I am naturally 10.5US, and so I got a size 10US. With this model, I think I could have gone a full size down but I will be wearing thick socks with these boots and 1/2 is just right. Will update my review once I've had the pair for a longer time. Edit (Update after 2-3 months): I have never experienced such comfy boots!!!! BUT..... The first 3-5 wears were HELL!!!! It came to a point that I had to put duct tape on my heals to prevent blisters. But after breaking them in (around after the 5th wear), they have become very comfortable!!!!! Yes, they are heavy, but somehow you don't feel the weight! Great boots!!!! Some tips: 1. They do run 1 to 1/2 size bigger. As mentioned, I use 10.5 in other shoes and got a 10D for Red Wing moc toes. They fit great! I also tried a friend's brand new pair (Abilene Moc Toe) which was 9.5E and it also fit! (But I think getting an E width is harder than the usual D). 2. Wear thick socks; 3. Tie em up tight -- this will help reduce slippage which could give you blisters; 4. BUT not too tight as I also got some soreness at the part of my leg where the top of the boot was rubbing against; 5. Wear em as often to break em in faster! I have become a Red Wing fan! Have already ordered my second RW, this time an Iron Ranger (friends swear there is no / minimal break in period). Will try to update this review again. ... show more

  • Great boot, but heavy. Fits a little big after break-in
I love the boot. The leather laces they come with are garbage, as they broke on me twice within the first few times lacing. They are super heavy boots but look nice, are well made, and fit well after breaking in. I'm a 9.5 in about 95% of the footwear I buy but these run large. I tighten them all the way after breaking them in and they're fine but I do have to really crank on the laces and keep them tight. (lengthwise is where they run big. The width is great after break-in) ... show more

  • First Impressions...few hours in...
Final fit and finish first rate. Leather is sweet and damn near perfect. Two pairs laces nice touch. Insoles come out unlike rest of my RW heritages. I usually step down from a 10.5 to a 9 for redwings, and force a good fit they wear and softening. Luckily I went up to 9.5 on these luckily. These are tighter and narrower on my feet than my 3 other pairs, but in time should break in nicely. Key takeaway is the sole. It’s insane. I’m used to stiffer soles with minimal give. These already feel sweetly soft and airy, only a day in! Long term review to come! ... show more

  • Awesome boots AFTER they are broke-in
Here is the scoop on these Red Wings. First they are 100% Legit, they are not knockoffs. I was worried myself because I didn't notice the logo on the side, after doing some research I discovered that Red Wings do not imprint their logo on the side of some of the newer makes. Size wise I read a bunch of mixed information. I ordered 1 full size down originally but I had to send them back for only a 1/2 size down. So make sure you order 1/2 size smaller than your normal sneaker size. To give you more context, I wear size 9 in Nike tennis shoes, so 8.5 Red Wings worked perfect. Okay here is the most important part, the break-in period (I can only speak to the "Charcoal Rough and Tough" model I purchased)... the leather on these boots is quality thick leather. It is no joke and breaking them in is no joke either! I'm used to wearing soft leather Frye and Kenneth Cole boots that aren't necessarily built for work... so breaking in these Red Wings was hell, I'm not going to lie to anyone. Every forum you read online you will discover this is almost a given with Red Wings, you earn them. For me the piping at the top of the boot was digging into my ankle bad until they finally broke-in. Here are a couple tips to help others. If you have problems with the piping digging into your ankle like I did, then for the first two weeks leave the top two eyelets of the boot unlaced. Once they're broke-in you can lace them all the way up with no issues at all. This is a big recommendation here. I used "Sofsole Leather Lube" (you can find it here on Amazon) on my boots to soften the leather. This helped the most, and also add protection to the boots in the process. NOTE: It did darken the leather though, the gray turned almost black (which is what I kinda wanted anyways), I attached a picture of them after I lubed them. Just massage the lube into the boots really well and let them sit over night, the next day wipe off any excess and brush them up. It took me wearing them as my main boot for about 2-3 weeks to break them in. BUT, once they're broke-in you have the best boot you could ever want... they take the shape of your foot and feel great. Hope this helps others. ... show more

  • Nice quality but not exactly as expected & look at the sizing recommendations
Size: 12 Color: Black Cherry
The fit runs small so make sure you are looking at the recommendations when ordering. The color style also wasn't as expected so we ended up returning the item. It is very high quality though. Comfort is very stiff and uncomfortable but the comfort with this brand comes once the boots are broken in. We didn't get to test the Waterproof aspect of the boots since they were returned but they are leather so I'd still recommend adding protection to them to ensure longevity. Arch support is not really a thing with these boots as they're pretty flat and the sole of the shoe is leather - and insert would easily resolve if more comfort is needed though. The style matched the photos exactly. ... show more

  • solid boots
First of all if you think you're going to take this boot out of the box and then have a good long walk forget it. These boots are solid, sturdy and made out of serious leather and you're gonna have to break them in gradually. As others have advised go a half size lower. I'm a 10.5 and ordered a 10. When I first put them on I thought uh oh I've made a mistake. First time on I could only wear them for 20 minutes. Well I've been wearing them longer and longer and I can tell they are going to be perfect when they're broken in. Invest in the full complement of Redwing boot care products. I'd advise anyone to purchase these serious, made in the USA boots update-10/4 Looking back I probably should have got the 10.5 because my foot is closer to an 11. I really like these boots, worn them plenty and I've mink oiled the hell out of them but they're still not as comfortable as I'd like. I will order another pair of a 10.5's in a different color because theres no way I'm going through another break in period like this one ... show more

  • I love these boots
I love these boots, now. I normally wear a 9.5 -10.5 depending on the brand. I went with a 9 as recommended my many reviewers. The length was fine, but they were very narrow in the toebox with insoles installed. I read every review I could find on red wings and sizing before I ordered. I think you should think hard not only about the boots but about what type of insole you require. The permanent leather insole in these is inadequate for my needs, on it's own. I tried numerous insoles in these trying to find something that was cushioned enough without making the boot too tight. I put baggies of water in the boots and froze them to stretch them at least 4 times, and could not get them to stretch enough to make them fit comfortable. I was about ready to give up and try to sell the boots. Out of desperation I bought a bottle of shoe stretch liquid. I put in my new sof soles thin insoles. sprayed the inside and outside of the boot. then I put on 2 pairs of thick wool socks, soaked in shoe stretch. I crammed my feet into the boots and wore then around the house for 4 hours. Once they were completely dry they fit like a glove. For casual wear they are as comfortable as any show I own. In summary, if you wear thick insoles don't size down a full size, and if you do size down prepare for the time investment. Once you invest they time they are great. Nearly every time I wear them someone compliments me on them. ... show more
