  • Disc Loading Help
If you have Windows 10 you may find that your CD/DVD/BluRay player doesn’t work. Download VLC Media Player. Plug in the USB radio controller (important step later—you may have to switch which USB port you plug it into, I had to change mine to USB Port 2 with the little “+” battery logo next to it). Open VLC Media Player and select to Open. You’ll get a menu that has a blank “file name” drop down menu. IGNORE that and look to the left side of that window. Right click on “DVD RW (Drive D)” and select “autorun or install software”. Then you have to WAIT for over a minute, while staring at the file name open menu, as if you should be choosing something…but don’t. Just wait and all of a sudden RF9 will come up. Just follow the easy prompts and it will start loading. After about a half-hour of loading it will ask you to put in Disc 2 and then click OK. After about another half-half of loading if will say you can start. Once you start RF9 you should click “update” and then update for another 5 minutes to get the latest and greatest versions. Then you get to enter your warranty info and the long serial # off the DVD case. At this point nothing worked, so I had to unplug the radio controller unit and plug it into USB Port 2 with the little “+” battery logo next to it. Then on the screen it said something like “installing device”. I clicked “Start” to begin flying and there is a calibration that you have to do: you move all the sticks in all directions and flip all the switches, turn the “R” knob on the front and also turn the two weird little switch/knob thingies on the back of the radio (they’re were your index fingertips would be if you were holding the box normally). Then I just picked a field and a plane and started flying! It took about 2 hours to: install VLC media player so my disc drive would work, install both discs, install the online software upgrade. I CANNOT IMAGING adding actually doing the download of this software AND THEN ACTUALLY INSTALLING IT—it would be worth it to buy a cheap external DVD drive if your computer doesn’t have one (then load its driver or VLC Media Player to run it because Microsoft deleted DVD drive software from Windows, even on computers that came from the factory with a DVD player like mine did!). My computer is a 2017/18 Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 Signature Edition with the DVD drive option; i7-6700T 2.86 Ghz; 16GB Ram, 64 bit x64 running Windows Home 10. I am so glad I bought this software! I discovered that a lot of the cool ducted fan, WWII-style war fighter planes (Zero, Messerschmitt, Sabre, etc) that look all agile are sort of dogs compared to some of the others (turn left with some tail-flap and they start falling out of the sky, not very snappy response to anything, etc.). The crazy, intimidating 3D planes are super fun and easier! There are around 160 different models to choose from (including helicopters and drones). This totally changed what I think my next plane will be. There are a lot of flip-switches on the radio. One of the ones on the left lets you quickly cycle through: SAFE and the AS3X modes or shut them off to allow lots of aerial acrobatics. I’ve found that I sort of hate SAFE mode, but on some planes AS3X can be nice at times. There is a nice reset button right on the radio. There is also a jack/port on the back of the radio that I think you can tie in other radios to it-but I’m not sure. My real radios are all the cheaper RTF DM-2 type ones from ParkZone (I’m working my way up slowly). So, two hours of loading and two hours of crashing about $10,000 worth of planes. I can say this: when I’ve crashed real RC planes—it’s identical to how I crash the planes here. Instead of being out of a plane for weeks after a crash I can hit reset and try it again and LEARN. The flight physics seem VERY real to me (I can tell when I’m getting too loose and am going to lose control). For less than two-hundred bucks this has paid for itself on the first evening. I’m getting better flying, I’m learning, I’ve found that the planes that I think look cool are something that would bore me to fly. TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!! Even if you’re an expert flyer this is a great way to test-drive over a hundred different models to help choose what you want to buy next. Also, I’m in metro Detroit so the weather is never good to fly, and my field is limited. Couple that with my TERRIBLE depth-perception and I think I like flying with RF9 better than the real-thing. The question so many ask: “Should I buy this or a plane”. I’d actually say to buy this! Mike From Detroit ... show more

  • I can't stop flying with this thing!!! And it works in Parallels just fine!
Ever since moving to NYC, I have really, *REALLY* missed flying my drones and RC planes. Sure, I have my Tiny Whoops and Inductrix FPVs which I fly around in my apartment, but that's just not the same as getting out there in the open. Well let me tell you... this simulator makes me feel like I'm out there flying the real thing! The controls are incredibly responsive and the physics seem to be damn spot-on with their real-world counterparts (ok, maybe they need to do some work on the on-aircraft lighting which misses some shadows on the ground at night, but I'm really nitpicking here.) Heck, even skimming across the surface of the water seems to give just the right amount of tug/resistance on the landing gear! And about them... just like with an actual plane, if you snap one of them off, or part of your elevator, or whatever, the plane still flys as if that happened in real life! I had a blast 'flying' a F4 Phantom model that the wings snapped off of as if it was some on-ground missile that I could occasionally get up in the air. Yes, completely and utterly ridiculous, but damn if I didn't distract myself messing around with that busted fuselage for a good ten minutes just seeing what I could do! Oh... and crashing is half the fun in this thing!! Trying to purposely run into flag poles and the like is a lot harder when you're actually trying to. (Oddly, when you're trying to avoid them, they're like magnets! hehe!) You're gonna love playing this! Oh... side-note... I'm running this from a 2016 MacBook Pro from within Parallels Desktop 15, running it on a 4K monitor *with* two additional 24" monitors on the side (they aren't also running the Flight Sim. Just the center 4K monitor.) I bring that up because on a three-year old Mac, running a virtualized Windows, on a 4K screen, the performance is still stellar! I'm definitely getting 30FPS and I think in some cases, it sure feels like 60! You won't be disappointed (and you don't need to run it in Boot Camp!) ... show more

  • New R/C Pilot or looking to get back in? This is a MUST HAVE!!
I flew 3 & 4 Channels sailplanes back 35 years ago and then life got in the way of the hobby. I was pretty low time when getting out. I've been an FAA certified Private Pilot for about 25 years now and have recently discovered how much has changed in the R/C world with the new tech and electric power plants. I just had to dive in feet first! I recently bought a HobbyZone RTF Carbon Cub 2+, 1: Because I've flown the real thing and their a hoot! 2: It seems to serve as a decent beginner aircraft as well as a decent experienced user aircraft. Due to weather and a few other issue that prevented me from getting out and flying it, in the meantime I thought it might be a good idea to try the RealFlight 9 simulator so I bought it. Utilizing similar disciplines from my real flight training and recurrent training, I started in with the software in my free time and easily accumulated about 20 hours of flight training with the same plane I owned. When I got out to the field the other day, I was absolutely blown away at how intuitive and easy it was to successfully fly my new Carbon Cub S2+! It was virtually identical! I'm exclusively working through pattern work for the first 6 batteries, doing some pattern work and tons of take-offs and landings. My first take-off was easy but better yet, my first landing was G R E A S E D like I had been doing it for years! You can crash all day long on the Sim and not have to glue your plane back together or outright replace it. It allows you to do very realistic maneuvers at all altitudes without the stress so you can build muscle memory and confidence in your maneuvers. This was indeed MONEY WELL SPENT for training but it's also PURE FUN flying all the additional aircraft available in the inventory. ... show more
